New Cleveland Browns cornerback Joe Haden was drafted in the first round to help reinforce a defensive secondary that has been more than porous over the past few years.

Haden may not start in 2010, unless he can beat out current starter Eric Wright, but never say never when it comes to competition in the NFL because it brings out the best in players.

Back in 2007, when Browns' head coach Eric Mangini was coaching the New York Jets, cornerback Darrelle Revis was drafted in the first round to help rebuild the Jets' secondary, and three seasons later Revis is one of the top cover corners in the NFL today.

Now this is just a loose comparison between a rookie and a two-time Pro Bowler, but Haden's future looks to be bright since his scouting reports coming into the NFL are very similar to the ones that Revis had coming into the NFL as well.

. . . Mangini helped groom Revis in two years with the Jets, and last season Revis broke out to become one of the best. Revis didn't have too long to learn the NFL system and game speed since he was immediately inserted into the starting lineup on day one. Haden will actually have the benefit of competing for a starting job and getting mentored by veteran cornerback Sheldon Brown, who has reportedly already started teaching Haden the pro game.

Brown, Wright, and Haden are a solid combo going into the 2010 season, and with a veteran on board to teach both Wright, who has never had a veteran mentor in his pro career so far, and Haden, the secondary will only be better prepared for this year.

If it takes Haden three years to finally have a dominating, break out year like Revis did in 2009 and makes a Pro Bowl in his second year as did Revis, then he will be worth the high first round pick that was used by the Browns to select him the 2010 NFL draft.

i know he destroyed people in college. hopefully that will continue in the nfl. and yes, i can't wait for the season to start to.

also, i think his past injuries have been blown out of proiportion. he had a surgery in high school and another in his freshman year in college (if i remember correctly), but the rest of his injuries were just normal stuff that anybody gets while playing all season long. we shall see.

SJ_Browns

Reply to Can Mangini groom Joe Haden to be a top CB in the NFL on Tue, 25 May 2010 03:54:27 GMT

@<bdi>sj_browns</bdi> said:
this is slightly off subject, but it relates to the browns secondary. did anyone see tj ward on tv sunday nite? he was on abao with bruce drennan, then he was on wkyc chan 3's sports wrap up show. he seems like a real humble guy and really fits what holmgren, heckert and mangini want. i came away quite impressed with him after viewing both of his interviews. i've heard him in an interview before, but these were more in depth so i gained an even larger amount of respect for him.

the writer of the article was kind of vague, but in a round about way he said sheldon brown was a lock to start. when i read this part of the article, i assumed that's what he meant:

the only complaint that revis had in regards to mangini was that he was too strict on the team. i guess revis doesn't realize that the whole strict thing (more commonly known as discipline) had a very positive effect on players like him.

there's no way a rookie like revis just comes into the nfl and develops on his own (and goes to the pro bowl in his 2nd year) without the help of his coach. especially under the circumstances that revis was under during his rookie year (see quote above). the article in my op says mangini groomed revis and imho, there's no reason to believe other wise.

SJ_Browns

Reply to Can Mangini groom Joe Haden to be a top CB in the NFL on Sun, 23 May 2010 02:22:10 GMT

Rorbotron said:
Mangini if you ask me had VERY LITTLE to do with Revis.

If you ask me coaching has A LOT to do with how most of the players in the NFL turned out and will turn out. How many guys have been labeled great athletes during college/combine only to fizzle out in the NFL?

I'm not saying that Haden will be another Revis and I'm sure Revis's athletic ability had a good deal to do with how great of a player he is now but I think coaching helped him out more than you want to give credit.

next2nothing

Reply to Can Mangini groom Joe Haden to be a top CB in the NFL on Sun, 23 May 2010 01:13:44 GMT

@<bdi>sj_browns</bdi> said:
edit: mangini was the db coach for the pats from 00-04. that explains why he was able to groom revis so well. i don't think mangini will have a hard time getting haden on track to be a good cb.
