Well that is not all of it, it is the Indians and Pirates as well. This great article below about the Pirates happened after I was a solid fan of all four franchises. So please no more you cannot be. Enjoy the slaughter of the Giant by Maz and the Buccos. The similarity between Cleveland and Pittsburgh the sports teams and workers and everything is strong.

'You know what it was about that World Series that got everyone so excited?" asks Gino Cimoli, an outfielder on the 1960 Pirates known for his dramatic hits and his salty tongue. "We weren't supposed to win. The Yankees had all these superstars and we were just a bunch of ordinary guys."

With 17 consecutive losing seasons—and on track for another this summer—the Pittsburgh Pirates have had little to celebrate on the baseball field of late. But at tonight's game against the Cleveland Indians, the National League club will reach back to honor Mr. Cimoli and 13 other surviving members of that storied championship squad.

For readers unfamiliar with the history, the 1960 Pirates shocked the baseball world—and the mighty New York Yankees, including Mantle, Maris, Berra and Ford—by winning the World Series. The high point was a game seven, bottom-of-the-ninth home run by Pirates second baseman Bill Mazeroski off Ralph Terry. It was the only time baseball's crown has been awarded due to a walk-off round tripper.

So deeply is that event embedded in Pittsburghers' collective consciousness that each October 13, often in stinging sleet, a recording of the radio broadcast of that game is played outside in real time in front of the last remnant of the Forbes Field wall still standing in the city's Oakland district. Hundreds of fans who attended that game (and hundreds more who only claim they did) converge with folding chairs, thermoses of unidentified liquids and increasingly misty memories of a team that once was.

Every year on that afternoon, long after the current Pirates have been swept from contention and the city's ardor drifts to its beloved Steelers, the Pirates twice take and cede the lead in game seven. At precisely 3:36 p.m., Maz deposits Terry's 1-0 slider over the left field wall into Schenley Park, where it was never found, and NBC announcer Chuck Thompson errantly shouts that the Pirates have won the game 10-0 (it was 10-9).

To confine that 1960 miracle to the realm of sports is akin to referring to the 2000 presidential election as an accounting anomaly. The victory put much-reviled Pittsburgh on the map and changed it forever. After 1960, the "Smoky City"—which O. Henry described as the "low-downdest hole" he had ever seen and its inhabitants as "the most ignorant, ill-bred, contemptible, boorish, degraded, insulting, sordid, vile, foul-mouth, indecent, profane, drunken, dirty, mean and depraved"—could bear any jibe with a tolerant smile: The Bucs had gone all the way.

The psychological lift came at just the right time. The city had started cleaning up its notoriously soot-filled skies, but the improvement came at the cost of thousands of local jobs in the steel industry, which moved to lower-cost, nonunion cities in the U.S. and abroad. Pittsburgh could never again legitimately call itself Steel City.

"We celebrate the '60 Series so much more than any other because the victory was so dramatic and because it was right here in Pittsburgh, unlike the Pirates' two subsequent championships in 1971 and 1979," says Brian O'Neill, a columnist for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the town's unofficial tone poet.

Mr. Cimoli, the outfielder, remembers the drama: "We came from behind and won 30 games that year in the ninth inning. [Manager Danny] Murtaugh had a bum stomach and he couldn't stand to watch the ninth in the dugout. He'd go back to the damn locker room and drink Maalox. And we'd score a couple runs and win the bastard for him. That helped his stomach more than medicine."

The current Pirates manager, John Russell, can't swallow enough antacid to quell his churning insides. In his first two years at the helm, the Bucs have lost 95 and 99 games and are now mired at the bottom of their division. The 2010 Pirates are not going anywhere but home for the post-season.

Still, team President Frank Coonelly sees better times ahead. "While we are struggling badly on the field at the Major League level right now, I am confident that our talent level is improved and that we will play better during the remainder of the year. I'll be disappointed if we are not contenders in the near future," he told a recent meeting of hard-core Pirate devotees.

For long-suffering fans, that can't happen soon enough. PNC Park is often half-occupied for games, and some fans boo the club's modern-day mascot, an outsized Pirates' parrot, simply because it reminds them of their current misery. Drew Balog, a retired teacher who snuck into game seven in 1960, sees green shoots of hope. "Some of the kids they've brought up show a lot of promise," he says. "There's frustration, sure, but there's a buzz on nowadays. Guys my age who remember 1960 are bringing their grandchildren to games again." Spoken like a true Pittsburgher.

Very good post Rich. I will say this right now about the weather. This Spring was one of the best in Cleveland in recent memory. Virtually no snow in March or April, and in fact April was the warmest on record. Summer so far has been quite hot. Which is exactly what it should be!

You're right about the useless wars, and spending ourselves broke. It absolutely makes me sick that all of our jobs are going overseas so that these big corporations can make an extra buck. What about what is in the best interest of our fellow Americans? I don't even want to get started on this rant, as I can already feel my blood pressure rising thinking about it. There are too many factors involved. It's funny, because my neighbor on his Facebook when asked about his political affiliation he put down "it doesn't matter, because it's too late." Sadly I think he may be right.

For these two rust belt cities it is crucial that they continue to reinvent themselves, or they will continue to decline. Pittsburgh is figuring it out. Cleveland needs a major overhaul in leadership. This city needs to s*** or get off the pot when it comes to the casino, revamping the flats, the Medical Mart the schools... ect, and do what it takes to capitalize on this. Again, I wish that I had all of the answers, but I don't. But in the end this goes way beyond who has better sports teams.

djdawg2010

Reply to How can one be a fan of both on Wed, 07 Jul 2010 19:56:04 GMT

Folks, this thread is awesome. OK, but what I am saying is that he has apparently put the considerations of "where is it nice to be in the winter" above the considerations of "where can I go play with the best player on the planet".

I do include them in the argument, because of their proximity. I actually didn't mind the Science Museum. I will tell you that the Rock Hall needs to be marketed better, and more geared toward having the induction ceremonies in Cleveland every year as opposed to every couple years. Now, we all know that the Cleveland schools are crap, however; a lot what goes into the fixing the schools has to start at home.

Bottomline, this city and region has a lot hardworking people, a lot of resources and a lot of potential. We as a region instead of pissing and moaning need to do what it takes to turn it around. With the economy being bad EVERYWHERE, this is a good time to capitalize and reinvent ourselves. Projects like the Medical Mart the casino, and the restoration of the Flats can go a long way in helping.

djdawg2010

Reply to How can one be a fan of both on Wed, 07 Jul 2010 16:20:29 GMT

@<bdi>the-gipper</bdi> said:

Of course, those "opinions" about what the most livable cities are change from magazine to magazine, from year to year. Cleveland "won" those polls itself a few years back.

But you are right, both towns are similar, have plenty to offer and enjoy, and a sports rivalry won't keep me from doing so, though I have no intention to go there soon. However, I had thought about it when I learned that there had been a National Heritage Area, administered by the National Park System that was to be set up there. Now, however I learn that the "Rivers of Steel National Heritage" will not be commissioned after all. It seems that the politician or politicians who were proposing it (from PA) have apparently overextended themselves as they also wanted essentially the entire state of PA to be a National Heritage area. They already have the "Oil Region" NHA, and the "Paths of Progress" NHA, and the Delaware-Lehigh Valley NHA, and the Lackawanna Valley NHA, and the Schuykill Valley NHA, and the Potomac NHA, and the Chesapeake Bay NHA, like I said, the entire damn state. Apparently the President and Congress said "that's enough", most other states have maybe one, two, or no NHA's...it is absurd to fund all these requests for Pennsylvania."

So, I will keep my eyes open on that. If it falls, I won't go, but if it succeeds I may check it out.

I have been to every major city in the US and Canada, and there are a lot of other places I have my eyes on, so Pittsburgh is not a high priority to visit...unless this other thing goes through and is implemented.

Here is link on this: http://www.nps.gov/state/PA/

But I can't get the Rivers of Steel link to activate. That may just be my computer, or maybe it has been deleted from the NPS site.

Yeah, I've been to a ton of cities as well, and I would agree with you that Cleveland would only rank in my top 10 because they have the Cavs and the Browns. Although back when I was old enough to party and would go to Cleveland, the Flats were a rockin place.

I'd certainly put Baltimore, Austin, and San Diego near the top of my list. I definitely haven't read the entire thread so if I missed the Warehouse District discussion early in the thread I apologize. Otherwise the Warehouse discussion appeared only after I mentioned the poor condition of the flats. I'd also wager that most of the people in this thread have only driven through Pittsburgh and have never taken the time to experience Pittsburgh. Hell I doubt you Mr. Travel has actually taken the time to experience Pittsburgh. Outsourcing is a huge problem and Pittsburgh has sustained the recession because of all the up and coming green technology and the medical industry. Other commodities play a factor as well. Either way if anyone actually took the time to take the colored glasses off I'm sure most would really enjoy the city of Pittsburgh. Most of my friends that are Browns diehards say they are "ashamed to admit" that they really like Pittsburgh after giving it a chance. Do I care if anyone here does? No but seeing as the city is so close you're really doing yourself a disservice but not checking it out in greater detail. A good friend of mine came in to town from Jacksonville. He was born and raised in Strongsville, Ohio. We went down town with my sister and mom. My gf was also with us and we walked for Autism. (My sister is a grad student at Duquense preparing to be a teacher in special education.) Anyway Jason was wearing his Browns hat and a pair of Browns custom Oakley's. He got harassed but it was friendly and we actually ran in to a few Cleveland imports that weren't flying the colors that day.
