It is probably because they have 2 games against the Browns who were only 5-11 last year, where the Browns have 2 games each against them whose record was much better.

The Gipper

Reply to 2010 Strength of Schedule on Thu, 05 Aug 2010 06:02:22 GMT

@<bdi>browns57</bdi> said:
It seems to me that we play the same 14 games as the other teams in our division. Is it Because they play the Browns twice?

Is it Because they play the Browns twice? Exactly. The calculation is pretty simple- just add up the won-loss record of the opponents.

And before anyone complains about the Browns schedule, the Bengal's is murderous. They not only get the Saints and Patriots (like the Browns do) but because they finished in first place last year they get the Colts and Chargers instead of the Chiefs and Jaguars.

hoorta

Reply to 2010 Strength of Schedule on Thu, 05 Aug 2010 03:57:24 GMT

@<bdi>cambridgeho</bdi> said:
Its sweet that the Saints have the 6th easiest schedule.

its because they play the browns and the whole NFC West.. none of which had good records last year..

bringbackbrownie2

Reply to 2010 Strength of Schedule on Thu, 05 Aug 2010 15:30:18 GMT

i wouldn't put much stock in the strength of schedule either. the strength of schedule can't factor in things like injuries, a good player having a bad season, draft pick busts, etc. it is what it is, a pre-season estimation that's mostly based off of what a team did last season.

alot of the opponents on the browns schedule look tough now, but let's see how they look right before the season opener and also mid-season.

SJ_Browns

Reply to 2010 Strength of Schedule on Thu, 05 Aug 2010 02:53:51 GMT

@<bdi>browns57</bdi> said:
Is it Because they play the Browns twice?

It is strictly a rotation-based schedule. I'm pretty sure the NFL adopted it starting in 1978 when it expanded to a 16 game schedule, and they have altered it through expansion.

Bob806

Reply to 2010 Strength of Schedule on Thu, 05 Aug 2010 01:36:26 GMT

@<bdi>browns57</bdi> said:
I don't put much stock in strength of schedule but help me understand how it is possible that both the Steelers and the Ravens have a lower strength of schedule.

I was just about to ask the very same question. I haven't looked to see if Thanksgiving is involved or something like that.

Every time I look at the schedule I have the same reaction: brutal. I really hope that Mangini doesn't need a winning record this season in order to stay on board. Hopefully it is enough to see real progress and more close games.

professor_g

Reply to 2010 Strength of Schedule on Thu, 05 Aug 2010 01:01:48 GMT

I don't put much stock in strength of schedule but help me understand how it is possible that both the Steelers and the Ravens have a lower strength of schedule. Face it...The steelers are good, cincy is good, and balt is good, and we have to play them twice.

If they sucked and we were the reining SB champion, we would have a easy schedule.

The schedule was only posted through this season 7 years ago, but if they follow the same schedule, here are our opponents through 2017 not including the two opponents not determined until the season is completed.

Teams are different every year. Plus we play an entire AFC and NFC division each year. This year the AFC North plays the AFC East and the NFC South (last yr it was AFC West, NFC North). We then have 6 division games and then 2 extra games.. These "extra" games are from the same conference and are harder or easier based on how well a team played during the previous season.. That is why we play Kansas City and Jacksonville because they weren't that good last year either. A team like the Saints, who won the Super Bowl, play Minnesota and Dallas (too much harder opponents).
