In my opinion, one of two things is happening:

1. Colt really has won over the coaches and he will start for the foreseeable future. They want him to keep a good thing going by keeping that incentive in front of the kid. Work hard and make it obvious to everyone.

2. The coaches want to start Colt but they want to be sure that the locker room is behind him. Mangini is big on trust and in his press conference he stated that Colt is generating a lot of trust from the veterans. A wrong move in a divided locker room could fracture the chemistry and threaten further success.

I only went back and looked at the passes that the NFL defined as deep in the play by play and they cut it off at 20.

Oh yeah?

Here's the stats for the season:

Seneca 16 of 98 passes were over 20 yards. That's 16.33% of all of his throws. Colt has thrown deep on 15 of 68 passes (22%). You can't say that Colt doesn't throw deep much. He throws more deep balls than Seneca has.

Of Seneca's 16 deep throws, he completed 5 (31.25%). Colt, meanwhile, has completed 8 of 15 throws (53.33%). You cannot, therefore say that "it's usually incomplete".

Yes, I DID GO BACK AND WATCH ALL of those deep throws. Seneca has struggled with the boundary throw. Colt has dropped a few in for completions.

Earl34

Reply to Colt should start the rest of the season on Wed, 10 Nov 2010 00:43:04 GMT

@<bdi>cantonlegend</bdi> said:
i was not comparing the best left tackle in the league to a backup rookie QB. i was just simply saying that joe thomas' record as a starter isnt very good...but that doesnt mean he isnt very good. he is only one player on the team and his impact, while a huge factor, is miniscule in the overall outcome of the game......just like colts impact. he is helpin to win the games....but he, himself, is not winning those games

The O-line is one of the most important part on a team. But the QB's role is effected much more by the play of one person. And when you lose, you get the blame. We have the luxery of letting our rookie QB get in game exp, knowing that we have two decent QB's that can come in if things start to go south - and things have gone well so far. I dont see the logic behind pulling him. We drafted him to become the long term fix at the revolving door that is Browns QB - am I saying he is the answer? No, we dont know yet. but to pull him when things are going well and he has his best oppurtunity to flourish doesnt make sense to me. But you have your right to that opinion.

Bodogjoe

Reply to Colt should start the rest of the season on Wed, 10 Nov 2010 00:35:27 GMT

I will admit that I am curious how Colt will do when a defense like the Jets slows down the running attack a little bit where the QB has to throw a little more. Its not homerism. I am not saying hes gonna be Joe Montana, or even win the next game. But you have a rookie QB, with alot of pressue on him come into games and do relatively well - while winning . He is maturing and gaining good exp, and has the potential to be a great QB. Also, players will rally around a QB. I would love to keep Senaca as a backup, but if he's not happy with that, give him kind regards and trade him to the Cowboys, Cardinals, Panthers, anyone who needs a QB(for the Cowboys it's only until Romo gets healthy). I think he can succeed as a solid average QB, hard to believe Seattle favored Whitehurst over Senaca.

beefjerky

Reply to Colt should start the rest of the season on Tue, 09 Nov 2010 23:34:59 GMT

@<bdi>cantonlegend</bdi> said:
he hasnt done far far better than jake or seneca......he has 1 TD and 2 INTs in 3 games

he has only thrown for 530 yards

the only thing he has done is started when the browns won the game

jake also has 1 INT but has played against superior defenses and has had to throw the ball more in his games

seneca has nearly 700 yards passing with 4 TDs and 2 INTs

if you ask me who the best QB is by looking at those numbers, id say seneca by a landslide

he isnt a career 3rd stringer.....hes backed up one of the most consistant QBs in the NFL for the past several years and come in and performed well when hasselback goes down

Jake played against superior defenses? Better than the Steelers? Long and short, Colt is 2-1 as a starter. Seneca and Jake were a combined 1-4. End of story.

Colt makes amazing plays with his feet.

re: the game, loved what Colt showed us again.

re: starting the rest of the season, i feel when it's time to commit to Colt, we commit to Colt all the way. the team is playing awesome around him and if the Coaches, FO, etc feel the rookie gives the Browns the best chance to win, i'm behind it all the way. and that means through the good and the bad.

some on here have posted that they feel after the other 2 QBs return from injury Colt should be the guy for the rest of the season...unless he starts playing poorly, making mistakes, or however you want to word it. then and only then you bench him, if i understand them correctly. well that's where i differ. imo don't make him "the guy" until you're sure, and you stick with him through it all, coaching him up the whole way.

that's where i'm coming from when i cast my JD and SW votes fwiw.

agreed.....you dont just start him until he screws up then bench him

thats not the continuity the browns need. they need a guy who can lead them to victory when the game is on the line and colt isnt ready for that IMO. seneca and jake are better prepared for those situations and if the gameplan remains the same with either of them at QB then the browns should continue to win games

but "riding the hot hand" is something you do with a running back or WR. you dont do that with a QB. they are too important to an offense and if and when jake and seneca get back, they should start on the simple basis that they are better and more experienced as of now

CantonLegend
