If Colt McCoy (ankle) starts in Week 15, it will likely be Seneca Wallace, not Jake Delhomme, backing him up.

Delhomme has started the last three games while McCoy was sidelined, but Wallace offers the opportunity to be used in WildDawg packages, but only if he's the designated No. 2. "I want to look at the packages of stuff that we have and see how it looks and make a decision," Browns coach Eric Mangini said.

BEREA, Ohio -- It's Week 14 for the Browns and we're still asking who's the quarterback. Isn't that the perfect metaphor for another Browns' playoff-less season?

Before practice, coach Eric Mangini predicted that Colt McCoy would take "a decent amount" of reps with the first-team offense. But hold your horses about saddling up the rookie just yet for his anticipated return for the Cincinnati game on Sunday.

"In terms of movements and all the things asked of a quarterback, he doesn't have limitations," Mangini said. "But, again, it's a matter of doing it and seeing how it looks and how it feels.

"I'll be more definitive tomorrow."

McCoy is in the fourth week of recovery from a high left ankle sprain. Jake Delhomme tried to come back in the fourth week of his original high right ankle sprain, but was still hobbled and worsened the injury. He then returned in the sixth week following his second ankle injury.

Seneca Wallace was in the fourth week of his high right ankle sprain when he suited up as the backup quarterback, but did not play. Three weeks later, Wallace said his leg still was not 100 percent. He wore a tight wrap around his ankle at practice on Wednesday.

"Each one of those [injuries] are different, in terms of severity, leg, place on the ankle," Mangini said. "So the time each guy needs to come back is different. I've had guys come back and play in the same week. I've had them back in two weeks, three weeks, four weeks."

So that clears that up.

McCoy will speak with reporters on Thursday, at which time he is expected to be named the starter in Cincinnati. Barring a setback, of course.

Since all three quarterbacks are healthier than they've been at the same time since the season opener, Mangini will have to sort out not only who's the starter but who's the backup. More to the point, who's the No. 3 and virtually out of the game plan?

"If you don't score points in this league and win, you're not getting the job done," Jake Delhomme (17) said about his potential demotion from Eric Mangini. "I didn't do enough the other day to get our team to the end zone."

On Monday, Mangini said that if McCoy could not start, he would go with Delhomme over Wallace. But the irony is that Delhomme could be the odd man out. Wallace can contribute something in those promised WildDawg packages, but only if he is designated the No. 2.

"So I want to look at some of those things here today and talk about it with Brian [Daboll, offensive coordinator]," Mangini said. "Because if you're the third [QB] you can't come in until the fourth quarter unless the other two are injured. I want to look at the packages of stuff that we have and see how it looks and make a decision."

For his part, Delhomme is rolling with the punches. He's taken a few since the 86-yard, two-turnover, 49.2-rating effort in the 13-6 loss to Buffalo.

"If you don't score points in this league and win, you're not getting the job done," Delhomme said. "I didn't do enough the other day to get our team to the end zone. You have to be critical of yourself."

It's possible that Delhomme's last pass of the season was the one intercepted at the end of the game against Buffalo. Then again, there's three games left for the quarterback carousel to spin again.

"I know Colt is battling to get back healthy," Delhomme said. "He did some good things when he was in, but I have to worry about what I can control. Whatever happens from that point ... you don't rock the boat, you keep your mouth shut, you go to work and you do it. That's the way I was brought up."

He said being demoted to No. 3 wouldn't be that much more of a blow than being No. 2.

Reply to Seneca Wallace Likely Back Up QB on Fri, 17 Dec 2010 13:50:29 GMT

THANK GOD.

Kosar_For_President

Reply to Seneca Wallace Likely Back Up QB on Fri, 17 Dec 2010 13:20:46 GMT

Wow.. this proves to me that something fishy was going on as to why delhomme was starting the past three games over Wallace...

585Dawg

Reply to Seneca Wallace Likely Back Up QB on Fri, 17 Dec 2010 08:04:24 GMT

@<bdi>ithika</bdi> said:
Sorry Mods might as well merge this with the Colt starting thread, didnt read that one when i posted this.
