I was going to add something useful to it. Nevertheless, here you go. Elsewhere there was some discussion about how good the TEs of the AFCN actually were. Of course the subject may in fact be a matter of opinion, but YAHOO.com put out their opinion on who the best TEs in the league were going into the 2011 season (and we will assume there will be one). I suspect these were done for fantasy football purposes, but I am not sure where else you can go to get player rankings any more besides fantasy BS. Here were their rankings:

1. Dallas Clark, Indy

2. Antonio Gates, SD

3. Vernon Davis, SF

4. Jason Witten, Dallas

5. Jermichael Finley, GB

6. Owen Daniels, Houston

7. Tony Gonzales, ATL

8. Zach Miller, OAK

9. Dustin Keller, NYJets

10. Brent Celek, Philly

11. K2, TB

12. Mercedes Lewis, Jax

13. Chris Cooley, Wash.

14. Greg Olsen, CHI

15. Jermaine Gresham, Cincy

16. Heath Miller, Pitt.

17. Brandon Pettigrew, DET.

18. Visanthe Shiancoe, Minn.

19. Kevin Boss, NY Giants

20. Tony Scheffer, Det.

21. Ben Watson, CLE

22. Rob Gronkowski, NE

23. Dante Rosario, Carolina

24. Todd Heap, BALT

25. Aaron Hernandez, NE

So, as I see it there is plenty of room for debate about the qualities of the TEs in the AFCN.

Reply to Tight Ends on Sat, 26 Feb 2011 20:15:49 GMT

Homotron said:
lol get the hell out of here. Gates will never be mistaken for a Tackle but his blocking is adequate and his route running, intelligence, and hands are well beyond any other at the position. I guess I just don't see why someone would want a sixth linemen over someone that creates mismatches and opportunities all over the field.

Exactly, by the second half of the season the defenses were pulling up safeties and stacking the box (possibly a reason Robo started doing better in the second half) which explains why Hillis' numbers went down along with the fact he didn't have a back up to spell him. With this stacked box you would have expected Watson's numbers to go down as well since that is where a majority of his routes are ran but they really stayed constant for most of the year.

Gate is an all time great, and a first ballot HOFer (and TE's are NEVER first ballot) Dude is a BEAST in the receiving game so much so in fact that I do not care that he can't block that well.

jnuh

Reply to Tight Ends on Mon, 21 Feb 2011 19:13:02 GMT

@<bdi>pizzadeliveryguy</bdi> said:
This is pretty good posting although Pettigrew may end up being in tier 1 eventually.

Kevin Boss is a young Watson. A good blocker and pass option. I would honestly rather have a TE like Watson or Boss that have a TE like Gates would is just a receiving option.

Harry Buffalo

Reply to Tight Ends on Mon, 21 Feb 2011 18:37:13 GMT

@<bdi>pizzadeliveryguy</bdi> said:
This is pretty good posting although Pettigrew may end up being in tier 1 eventually.

He could, but right now he is in this group.

jnuh

Reply to Tight Ends on Mon, 21 Feb 2011 16:06:34 GMT

@<bdi>jnuh</bdi> said:
Thats great that you don't think he is average. But the reality is he and Watson are both average and very much in the same tier of TE. It's not a knock on Miller or Watson, but the reality is they are middle of the pack guys. Those 2 are clumped in the middle with the likes of the Merceds Lewis, Brandon Pettigrew, Greg Olsen, Dustin Keller, Kevin Boss and Visanthe Shiancoe's of the league.

Sorry to break it to you.
