20lbs? Think about that for a minute. You want to take a guy whos best attribute is his speed and burst, then tell him to add 20 lbs. These guys are athletes and to add 5 lbs is common but over 8-10 lbs your asking the guy to change the way he knows how to play the game. 20 pounds on a 6'1 frame is ALOT. Keep in mind half of the time your watching these guys on tv their weight isnt what it says on the stat sheet. If a guy is listed as 250 you his playing weight is probaly around 240-245. It goes the other way for the fat NTs like Rogers and Hampton.

There are plenty of guys playing in the 250-260 range at DE. Robert Mathis and Elvis Dumerville are 2 DEs off the top of my head that are under 260 and are always in the pro bowl hunt.

Louisville Slugger

Reply to Nick Fairley Or Marcell Dareus on Mon, 07 Mar 2011 19:51:30 GMT

@<bdi>clevelandmilidh</bdi> said:

Moch is projected to be a LB, at 6'1" he's definitely undersized at DE. But Heckert said he's looking at undersized DE with some speed of the edge, and he said there's alot of them in this draft. So a guy like that is probably likely after the 1st round. If we get Watt in the 1st to play strong side DE and be stout against the run and pass, then get a edge rusher in the 2nd or 3rd to play opposite him would make for a pretty ideal situation. Then put a undersized guy like Drake Nevis next to Rubin and you got yourself a good combination to be able to stop the run and still get pressure on the QB. The possibilities.....I cant wait till the draft

I'm definitely not an expert on this but I usually think of a 5-technique as a 3-4 DE. They usually line up face up with the OT. The nose-tackle plays directly opposite the center.

In a 4-3 defense, one tackle plays between the center and a guard. The other (the 3-technique) plays just outside of the guard on the other side. The 3-technique usually is a better pass rusher and is often in a one on one with the guard.

Marcell looks slow and easily blocked, Fairley's got that killer instict, and a great first step. Some of his aggressiveness is going to have to be tempered down at the next level, but that's easier to do then trying to motivate somebody to be more aggresive. I like him alot at 4-3 DT with his disruptive style, but its more likely Marcell would fall to us, who then I would chose JJ Watt over.

I thought they both looked great at the combine.

When you watch Fairley on tape, his first step is probably the best in college football. The ten-yard split doesn't take into account reactions to the snap, to the o-line, ect. (Though Dareus time was unbelievable for 320 lbs).

I'll take Fairley because I think he can be an elite 3-technique pass rushing tackle next to a more stout Rubin. That combo would be a great start to a D-line and I think they would complement each other perfectly.

I'll take Fairley because I think he can be an elite 3-technique pass rushing tackle next to a more stout Rubin. That combo would be a great start to a D-line and I think they would complement each other perfectly.

If the team is convinced Fairley is a hard-worker and doesn't have character issues than I think he would be the choice.

I like them both a lot though.

LeBrent
