It's the tea party.

...Of course, politicians of all stripes are not faring well among the public these days. But in data we have recently collected, the Tea Party ranks lower than any of the 23 other groups we asked about — lower than both Republicans and Democrats. It is even less popular than much maligned groups like “atheists” and “Muslims.” Interestingly, one group that approaches it in unpopularity is the Christian Right.

...

So what do Tea Partiers have in common? They are overwhelmingly white, but even compared to other white Republicans, they had a low regard for immigrants and blacks long before Barack Obama was president, and they still do.

More important, they were disproportionately social conservatives in 2006 — opposing abortion, for example — and still are today. Next to being a Republican, the strongest predictor of being a Tea Party supporter today was a desire, back in 2006, to see religion play a prominent role in politics. And Tea Partiers continue to hold these views: they seek “deeply religious” elected officials, approve of religious leaders’ engaging in politics and want religion brought into political debates. The Tea Party’s generals may say their overriding concern is a smaller government, but not their rank and file, who are more concerned about putting God in government.

This inclination among the Tea Party faithful to mix religion and politics explains their support for Representative Michele Bachmann of Minnesota and Gov. Rick Perry of Texas. Their appeal to Tea Partiers lies less in what they say about the budget or taxes, and more in their overt use of religious language and imagery, including Mrs. Bachmann’s lengthy prayers at campaign stops and Mr. Perry’s prayer rally in Houston.

Yet it is precisely this infusion of religion into politics that most Americans increasingly oppose. While over the last five years Americans have become slightly more conservative economically, they have swung even further in opposition to mingling religion and politics. It thus makes sense that the Tea Party ranks alongside the Christian Right in unpopularity.

Times are a-changin'. Pretty soon atheists won't be the minority. But I think what we can all agree on is that we want the Tea Party to go away. I mean, let's get the government out of our lives unless the topic is abortion or marriage, then of course the government should come down on it. I'm going to leave you with a quote from my Algebra 2 teacher, Jerry Dwyer (I'm pretty sure the Marianists were paying for his degree, and after he got it, he left the lay community like a champion)...

Alright folks, time to pick apart another delusional rambling by our resident moron. Notice how he posts this as I post a topic on how professors at Harvard and Notre Dame have concluded that the Tea Party is the most hated group in America. Note that the date of my link is from a few days ago.

Again, read Cal's quote above. See how he attacks me for only looking at things I want to read. Now let's look at a topic posted by cal in response to my topic.

http://thebrownsboard.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=19990

Zero replies. Hrm.

Anyways, let's take a look at the link he posted in this topic.

http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2009/12/16/4435425-tea-party-more-popular-than-dems-gop

This post claims that the tea party is more popular than dems and gop. Okay, this may have been true at some point. Let's check the date.

December 16, 2009. Two years ago. Also note that cal used a liberally biased source in MSNBC. Somebody call McCarthy, I think that cal might be a secret socialist!

So, cal, sits here, as I'm sure you all know, unaware that his hypocrisy is showing. Hell, he will probably even deny that he has been schooled, even though you can read it plain as day. But maybe I'm wrong. Maybe there is something I missed in his latest post that would redeem him.

meh. Not every Christian wants to mingle government and politics. Most Christians are moderate and not radical.

Most Christians aren't in the Tea Party.

And Bunker, not sure what point you're trying to make with the C&L article. It's basically only this paragraph

Sounds like this is the point Democrats should hit over and over again: That this nation was founded on religious freedom (and now includes the freedom not to worship) and we don't need elected officials interfering with that. Once we breach the wall separating church and state, we're no longer America.

Maybe I'm misreading it, but that seems to agree with the point of view from the original article.

And while the public image of the Tea Party focuses on a desire to shrink government, concern over big government is hardly the only or even the most important predictor of Tea Party support among voters.

Right, and I find it hypocritical that they are so vocal about big government, except when it comes to the gays. Government needs to step in and say gays can't marry. Government needs to step in and say we are a Christian nation. It's inconsistent.

VaporTrail
