So, I have broken down the 32 teams in the NFL by virtue of which conferences the various starting QBs come from. For this purpose I am using their "real starters", not fill in guys from injury. Here they are. You judge which is best:

SEC: 8 starting QBs: Tavaris Jackson, Tim Tebow, Jay Cutler, Payton Manning, Eli Manning, Rex Grossman, Cam Newton, Matt Stafford.

#note: Tavaris Jackson attended Arkansas, but graduated from Div. II Alabama St.

Pac-12: 6 starting QBs: Mark Sanchez, Matt Moore, Aaron Rodgers, Matt Cassell, Carson Palmer, Alex Smith

#note: Alex Smiths Utah team was not part of P-12 when he played, but is now.

ACC: 6 starting QBs: Michael Vick, Matt Ryan, Matt Hasselback, Christian Ponder, Matt Schaub, Phillip Rivers

#note: Matt Hasselback's Boston college was a member of Big East when he was there, not ACC

Big 12: 5 starting QBs: Colt McCoy, Andy Dalton, Blaine Gabbert, Josh Freeman, Sam Bradford

#note: Andy Dalton's TCU team was not part of Big-12 but is now.

Big 10: 2 starting QBs: Tom Brady, Drew Brees

Conf. USA: 1 starting QB: Kevin Kolb

MAC: 1 starting QB: Ben Roethlisberger

Divison FCS (I-AA) schools:: 1 starting QB: Tony Romo

Ivy League: 1 starting QB: Ryan Fitzpatrick

Perhaps the moral of this story is that teams should draft more Big 10 and MAC school QBs.

Big 10 school QBs: 4 Super Bowl wins

MAC schools: 2 Super Bowl wins

ACC schools: 0 Super Bowl wins

Big 12 schools: 0 Super Bowl wins

SEC schools: 2 Super Bowl wins

Conf USA: 0 Super Bowl wins

Pac 12 schools: 1 Super Bowl win

Ivy League: 0 Super Bowl wins

FCS schools: 0 Super Bowl wins

Reply to Conference Qbs on Mon, 09 Jan 2012 14:23:42 GMT

Go said:

Michigan sure isn't producing another Brady anytime soon.

With more and more schools going to:

- spread offenses with run first, throw second QB's; and

- full-time, hurry-up offenses where the entire offense lines up and then in unison looks to the sideline for any audibles.

The new wave college QB doesn't really have to throw... or think... or read defenses...

Seeing Aaron Rodgers actually calling plays week 17, albeit from the sidelines, was such a hoot. I dunno... maybe I've lived to long...

Tour2ma

Reply to Conference Qbs on Fri, 06 Jan 2012 14:42:44 GMT

@<bdi>cantonlegend</bdi> said:

Super bowl wins go to the teams...not individual players

Its a coincidence that QBs from the big 10 have the most super bowls only because Brady is responsible for 3 out of 4 of them all by himself

And brees ran a spread offense in purdue....so the style of offense may help translate early but it's not necessarily the deciding factor in the success of a qb

Of course I believe what you say is true, but the reason it is posted here is twofold: 1. It is simply an interesting factoid to be aware of and 2. there have been numerous comments on here that we should stay away from Big 12 QBs because their success in college and their gawdy numbers obtained in the spread offenses they run in the conference does not translate to the pro game.

Look at the 5 QBs that are from that conference. None have had any real NFL success.....yet, on the other hand, in looking at them the one with the most seniority has what? Maybe 3 years of experience? Josh Freeman is the most senior of the bunch, and he is just a baby QB wise. So it is probably far too early to make a blanket statement that 'Big 12 QBs can't make it in the NFL"

The Gipper

Reply to Conference Qbs on Thu, 05 Jan 2012 23:04:41 GMT

Super bowl wins go to the teams...not individual players

Quarterbacks that run a pro-style system in college like most schools do in the Big 10 and a few in the SEC seem to have better pro careers. I'm not saying it's a direct correlation but there could be something to that.

DawginIT
