Caucasian is actually a flawed term that Americans made up after for probably thousands of years it refers to people from countries of the Caucus mountains, or the Caucasus, so those are Armenians, Azeri, Chechens, Dagenstani, Georgians, Ossetians, Abkhazians, many more I can't think of right now.

so it's very confusing to non-English speaking countries that only know Caucasian as that and not as white people.

Another article of note on the subject:

Dear Straight Dope:

Caucasian can refer to the mountains of east Europe and the peoples that are native to this area. However, not all those who are referred to as Caucasian are actually connected to this part of the world, are they? Why do we refer to people of European descent as Caucasian?

— Mike Gibson, Normal, IL

The term Caucasian meaning the so-called white or European race originated with Johann Frederich Blumenbach (1752-1840), a German professor of natural history in Göttingen. Blumenbach is arguably the founder of scientific anthropology. He viewed mankind as an object of natural history--an animal like any other, although superior to the rest. He surveyed characteristics of human races, mapped their distribution, and invented comparative physiological anatomy.

While he observed many traits, he felt that the skull was the ultimate measure and indicator of race. Based on skull measurements, he classified five races: American, Caucasian, Ethiopian, Malayan, and Mongolian.

He selected a skull from Georgia (the one next to Russia) that he thought was the ideal of the Caucasian race, so named because of the Caucasus mountains that form Georgia's northern border. He thought that the Caucasus region was the home of a hypothetical race (for a time called Aryans, later Indo-Europeans), who many believe spoke a protolanguage from which many modern languages derive. By the way, the word "Caucasus" is from the Greek Kaukasos (Mt Caucasus), which gave the region its name.

His views are no longer held, of course. But don't get the wrong idea about Blumenbach. He viewed his work as purely scientific and vigorously attacked any political or social abuses of his race classifications. For instance, he is on record opposing the notion that blacks were a "lower level of humanity" than whites. The use of racial classifications as a political and social weapon to put down "lesser" races came from others.

The word "Caucasian" is still sometimes used in popular terminology, but has no scientific meaning. Webster's New 20th Century Dictionary says the word is used "in default of better" and defines it as "one of the main ethnic divisions of the human race: [including] Mediterranean, Alpine, and Nordic subdivisions . . . loosely called the white race."

The Gipper

Reply to Browns To Ignore Manning But To Focus On Lin? on Tue, 14 Feb 2012 00:38:54 GMT

@<bdi>the-gipper</bdi> said:

Besides, we already have Asian players on the Browns:

Scott Fujita

The first time I saw his name, I thought…Hey! A Japanese dude made it into the NFL, good for him. After 30 seconds of research, Scott Fujita is not the slightest part Asian. Rodney Fujita, a Japanese American, adopted and raised Scott in a traditionally cultural Japanese upbringing. Fujita grew up celebrating Japanese holidays, festivals, and traditions. Though he’s ethnically Caucasian (do we even call Caucasian an ethnicity), Fujita has took on his father’s name and Fujita himself considers himself as half Asian from his upbringing.

See this article:

Walter Tin Kit “Sneeze” Achiu

NFL Career: Achiu played in the earlier years of the NFL for the Dayton Triangles in 1927 and 1928 where he played running back and defensive back. Like most players of the early NFL era, Achiu played both Offense and Defense. Achiu was the first Asian-American to ever play in the NFL.

Physical Build: Very little biographical information can be found on Walter Achiu.

Career Stats: There is almost little to no information dating back to the early days of the Dayton Triangle. What information was available was that Achiu ran the ball 27 times for 27 yards, made 2 catches for 17 yards, missed a field goal kick, and had one incomplete pass.

Football Accolades: Achiu had little success in the NFL, but was a standout three sport athlete at the University of Dayton in football, baseball, and track.

Family Background: Achiu was born in Hawaii on the island of Oahu. Achiu’s father is Chinese and mother is Hawaiian.

Other Interesting Things: Walter the “Sneeze” Achiu was the first Asian to ever play in the NFL. Although Achiu had very little success in the leather head days, there is almost no biographical information on Achiu. When I researched for this article, it was surprising to see that the first Asian athlete predating Jackie Robinson and playing 7 years after the first African-Americans stepped on the gridiron, that literature on Achiu is almost non-existent.

Without even knowing the facts, one must positively accept that Achiu faced substantial discrimination from within the NFL and outside. Maybe because he wasn’t an all-star athlete we don’t hear about Achiu. I’m puzzled and I discover any more information on Achiu, you’ll know to find it here.

The Gipper
