Preseason Power Rankings No. 32: Cleveland Browns

Posted by Mike Florio on July 9, 2012, 10:29 AM EDT

AP

It’s the 10th anniversary of the Browns’ first and only trip to the postseason since the franchise returned in 1999.

Hooray?

Last year, the Browns were the only members of the AFC North to not make it to the postseason. While they likely won’t be quite so alone when the dust settles on 2012, they’re currently all alone at the bottom of the heap.

Hey, someone has to be No. 32. Though the Browns could scratch and claw and climb and thrive (and I personally hope they will), the franchise collectively has pressed the button that falls between “panic” and “reset” for the coming season.

The approach feels a little different, but the outcome is likely to remain the same. At least for now.

Strengths.

The good news is that the Browns continue to have one of the best left tackles in the game. The bad news is that, even with Joe Thomas doing his job as well as anyone who protects the blind side of a right-handed quarterback, having a cornerstone on the offensive line isn’t a stepping stone to a Super Bowl. Or, in the Browns’ case, a playoff berth.

The Browns also have a solid corps of cornerbacks, with Joe Haden, Sheldon Brown, and Dimitri Patterson anchoring an underrated coverage unit. Second only to the Steelers in pass defense last season, with 184.9 yards surrendered through the air per game, the Browns know how to avoid getting burned by today’s high-octane offenses.

Receiver Josh Cribbs remains one of the most dangerous return specialists in the game, even though the movement of the kickoff point from the 30 back to the 35 has diminished the value of a quality kick-return ace. In 2011, Cribbs generated the third highest punt-return average of his seven-year career, and he racked up a career-high 518 receiving yards. The Browns need him to step up even more on offense, especially if he hopes to stick around beyond the coming season.

Weaknesses.

Though there’s promise at the quarterback position, where 28-year-old rookie Brandon Weeden arrived via the first round of the draft, the depth chart remains an across-the-board liability unless and until Weeden shows he can perform at the NFL level. The ongoing presence of Colt McCoy serves only to exacerbate the situation; if McCoy is hovering over Weeden’s shoulder as he struggles or if McCoy ends up playing (and, with everyone including McCoy assuming he’ll eventually be benched for Weeden, thriving), the Browns could have another Derek Anderson/Brady Quinn mess.

The Browns’ pass defense may have performed so well statistically in 2011 because opponents didn’t need to throw against Cleveland, opting instead to gash them on the ground. The Browns finished 30th in the league last year in rush defense, giving up 147.4 yards per game. Bringing in free-agent defensive ends Juqua Parker and Frostee Rucker won’t dramatically help, but it can’t hurt.

It also won’t hurt if defensive tackle Phil Taylor can recover from a torn pectoral muscle sooner rather than later.

Beyond quarterback, the offense features plenty of potential weak spots and, at a minimum, question marks. Can second-round rookie Mitchell Schwartz step right in and take over for Tony Pashos at right tackle? Can receiver Greg Little make the kind of leap that will make the Browns feel even better about the Julio Jones trade? Can receiver Mohamed Massaquoi finally step up?

The biggest concern comes behind rookie tailback Trent Richardson. With the Browns investing so much in Cleveland’s most-hyped running back since Jim Brown, the Browns had better hope Richardson doesn’t get Ki-Jana Cartered in the preseason. If Richardson does, guys like Montario Hardesty, Chris Ogbonnaya, and/or Brandon Jackson will need to play the way they should have played to keep the Browns from feeling like they needed to go all in on a dime-a-dozen position.

Changes.

The Browns wisely have hired an offensive coordinator, in the hopes of taking some of the pressure off second-year head coach Pat Shurmur. He opted for familiarity in former Vikings coach and Eagles offensive coordinator Brad Childress, who did well in the latter job (despite not calling the plays) and not as well in the former. Childress knows a thing or two about running an offense with a workhorse tailback drawing safeties into the box; the challenge will be to unleash the passing game if/when Richardson becomes what the Browns expect him to be. In Minnesota, Childress wasn’t able to do that with any quarterback not named Brett Favre.

Richardson has become the star tailback because the guy who was supposed to be the next big thing in Cleveland, Peyton Hillis, took the Madden curse to a new level in 2011. Obsessed with getting a big contract, Hillis eventually got a one-way ticket to Kansas City, where he found a pot of gold far smaller than he thought he deserved.

On defense, safety Mike Adams has gone to Denver, and ends Juqua Parker and Frostee Rucker beef up a line that could use more of the same.

The most significant change has yet to be officially made. If the Browns want to get the most out of the 22nd pick in this year’s draft, they need to clear their 2010 third-rounder, Colt McCoy, off the roster. The sooner it happens, the better off Brandon Weeden will be as he tries to become the first franchise quarterback of the reconstituted Browns franchise.

Camp battles.

The biggest battle shouldn’t be a battle at all. Brandon Weeden should be installed as the starting quarterback, and Colt McCoy should be shipped elsewhere. If they can’t trade him, they should just cut him loose.

If McCoy stays, Weeden nevertheless has the inside track on winning the starting job. Especially since McCoy already has had enough time to audition for the gig — and has performed just well enough to persuade the Browns to spend a first-round pick on Weeden.

The battle to back up Trent Richardson likely will result in the third-place finisher (Montario Hardesty or Chris Ogbonnaya or Brandon Jackson) getting cut. Hopefully, the winner will at least get a Water Pik.

On defense, Sheldon Brown may not be able to hold off Dimitri Patterson for a starting cornerback job. The 33-year-old Brown could still slide back a level, if neither Eric Hagg nor Usama Young can effectively replace Mike Adams at free safety.

Prospects.

A six-game run against teams that either made the playoffs in 2011 or are being picked to get their in 2012 could cause the Browns to yet again fall down in a way that will prevent them from getting up. It will be critical to at least split with the Bengals in a pair of games played four weeks apart (Week Two and Week Six), and likewise to steal at least one from the Eagles, Bills, Ravens, or Giants.

If the Browns make the trip to Indy on October 21 at 2-4 and beat the Colts to climb to 3-4 with back-to-back home games looming against the Chargers and Ravens before the bye, things could get interesting in mid-November.

It’s unlikely, however, that the Browns will be able to consistently compete in the first season of the Trent Richardson-Brandon Weeden offense. The goal should be to demonstrate the kind of improvement that won’t cause the Browns to reach for the “panic” button or the “reset” button or any button close to either in 2013 and beyond.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wow... That's all I can say is "wow". What an unimaginative prick.

Our weaknesses are:

1)Having a QB competition between a unique QB prospect and a young QB with lots of potential.

2)Bringing in two veteran defensive lineman to man the hatches and help stop the run.

3)Talking about Phil Taylor.

4)Questioning our RT... a crash test dummy would be more resistance than Tony Pashos.

5)Cleveland is already sold on Greg Little. The sky is the limit for him, he just needs to remember to take the ball with him.

6)And bashing Cleveland for taking a "dime-a-dozen" position, ie. a Runningback, Trent Richardson to be specific. Well, screw him and Jim Brown. I don't care what the think. Richardson is going to be a breath of fresh air. Imagine Lawrence Vickers in a runningbacks body, NO, wait... A juggernauts body, then you'd have Trent Richardson. HE WILL TERMINATE DEFENSES.

Anyways, I'm just saying this guys sees weaknesses whereas I see opportunities. This guy is going to shit himself if he really believes that we are 32nd. Fuck these guys, now IT'S WAR! The way I see it, these guys better invest in a nice winter coat because they'll be covering Cleveland in January.

Realistically, I see Cleveland around the top 10 in preseason power rankings. They have some question marks, BUT, they also have some serious weapons to go to war with. Richardson, #1 RB in the league, I can't think of anyone else in the NFL that I'd rather have on our team as a runningback right now. If you have one, let me hear it.

We have the opportunity to put a very talented QB out there. Someone has to take the job. In my eyes the better QB will play. That is a GOOD problem to have. If it's Weeden that's great, but if it's McCoy then I expect a huge jump in his performance.

Our Strengths? They are the same Strengths that they've listed for us the last 2 years... Joe Thomas, Joe Haden... Josh Cribbs... insert mechanical robot voice... Give me a break! How about- Alex Mack! What about Jabaal Sheard? How about Trent Richardson, Atuba Rubin, DQ, TJ Ward, or our outstanding group of TEs? Nope! Same damn robotic voice reading the printout. They don't know the Browns! They don't know Cleveland. They are about to become "witnesses". 🥷

Reply to Preseason Power Rankings on Tue, 17 Jul 2012 15:53:51 GMT

prez of the mccoy haters = dumb as a bag of hair.

Seriously.....its getting outta hand.

We dont know anything yet....can gordon get off a jam at the line, will joes poor sophomore season be the anomaly, can weeden adjust to the speed of the nfl game, was big phil that important?

Theres oh so very few players on this team that are consistent and dependable.
Totally agree. Its great having enthusiasm but lets not get ahead of ourselves and be set up for a let down. Go to any teams forum and you'll see the same things. All the new rookies are already pro bowlers and their team is setup for the playoffs. How can any team possibly get worse with new elite talent? Well it happens. I'm optimistic and excited but I'll hold all playoff reservations until the season starts.

Remember last season. We had us running through the Bengals cuz they had a rookie qb from tcu.

I hope we struck gold but am holding reservations until real game play.

USFBrown

Reply to Preseason Power Rankings on Mon, 16 Jul 2012 20:02:17 GMT

Gotta agree with mik, in that we seriously need to cool off on anointing all these young guys as all-pro caliber.

I've got my money on these 21 players to figure it out. I see a lot of potential and firepower in this group. I think this offense matches up very well with just about any offense in the league IMO.

With Brandon and Colt we've got ourselves a good problem. If Weeden struggles then Colt can step in and take the load and allow Weeden to learn. In our Line I see a WALL ||||| In our runningbacks I'm interested in who will be backing up Richardson, as I'm sure Trent will storm the league and cause MASS SHOCK AND AWE! I love our group of TEs! I really, really like our young WRs, I'm so glad that we decided to forgo the veterans and build with potential young superstars. This group plus Smelley puts our offense in as a VERY young group that will grow together and gell in time to be a dominating force for years to come.

i love the fact that we're young and can grow together but half those guys on the list wouldn't make the practice squad on most other teams. i'm talking top line quality players who make pro bowls. this team there is thomas, mack, haden, and maybe ward if he's healthy. TR could be if he's not a bust. who knows about weeden. i wonder if he'd be getting up off the field as fast massaqua and mccoy did after getting leveled by harrison? hell, i'm fifty and wouldn't think to do today physically what i could do when i was 22. age does make a difference. and if our OL doesn't gell right away i don't see TR having a 2,000 yard year or weeden staying healthy the whole season. smelley ain't no marecjic who ain't no vickers. just ask hillis.

miktoxic

Reply to Preseason Power Rankings on Sun, 15 Jul 2012 17:16:03 GMT

Brandon Weeden

Maybe because the Steelers franchise model is something that is and should be respected? How often do you guys make the playoffs? How many Super Bowls have you been to in the last decade? How many have you won? The Ravens may have won the division, but in my opinion, the franchise is not quite at the dominant level that the Steelers have been for years.
2 things....

one.....that top 10 D wasn't tested, and only top 10 because we were giving up 200 yards rushing and 100 passing.....or more specifically, teams had us beat at halftime because we couldn't score. there is a correlation, but this isn't to say the pass D is a complete myth. we held team to a low number of yards, in part to teams not needing to score on us. considering the list of poor passers we played last year, i think youre a bit overboard in considering our D top 10. if you dig deeper into the ranking stats, our D is good in some areas and weak in others.

you cant argue we improved more....because those players youre evaluating haven't played yet. the jags got blackmon, skins rgiii, colts luck.......so just how are you quantifying you anger? youre really saying we SHOULD improve more based on how our rookies SHOULD preform.....but lets not be foolish enough to assume that what exists on paper exists in reality. what if weedz is DA bad? obviously, we all have the O&B glasses on and dont wanna consider that....but its certainly a possibility.

much like you thought we were a guaranteed 11-5 team last year.....and emotional prediction. we overhauled the offense in a single year....yes.....with rookies. if youre expecting this offense to take the league by storm, then youre simply making the same mistake you made last year. keep it realistic....theyre gonna struggle, theyre gonna make some great plays, it'll be a rollercoaster season by all indications. 3 rookies at 3 key positions....not exactly a guaranteed successful formula.

2 things for forums trolls though you got me to respond which makes you good at what you do.

1. You don't know how to fact check to well since threads and post are time stamped, but i am not sure you would understand that concept so it's a mute point.

2. I clearly VERY CLEARLY stated we couldn't be ranked 32nd based on our defense alone, nothing about our rookies performing well "stop making up shit in ya mind".

The Browns will be better this year book it poser.... Read it, time stamp it, save this thread for the dickhead the Cleveland Browns will win 10 or more games this year. YA i fucking said it i believe my team to be better than what you believe they will be.

Represent

Reply to Preseason Power Rankings on Sat, 14 Jul 2012 07:21:02 GMT

@<bdi>gafreleets</bdi> said:

why are you guys so in love with the Steelers? seriously....we weren't even the division champs last year. worry about putting together a winning season, because you managed to put up the 4th worst record in the NFL and it's odd that the main priority of browns fans is beating the Steelers (finally).

The Browns defense held up last year for its schemes and was in the top 5 for along time and a def top 10 easily, to have the browns dead last at 32 based on our defensive ratings and play last year i don't wanna read your preseason ratings.

Browns realistically could be 22-24 atm buw not dead fucking last. You don't gotta bring up the Jags, Dolphins, Rams, Cardinals, Vikings, Colts, Redskins, and Bucs each of those teams i could argue did not improve as much as the Browns did in post draft/fa/S.draft.

When you are that far at the bottom of the barrel, does it really matter exactly how deep? All those teams, including the Browns, are terrible in their own special way.
