We were talking about the Lee Evans dropped pass in the final minute of the AFC Championship game last year, and I was trying to think of other plays that cost a team a chance to appear in a Super Bowl. Here are a few. Can you think of others?

A. "The Drop". Lee Evans doesn't hold on to the ball in 2011 Ravens/Pat AFC title game.

B. "The Fumble". Ernest Byner fumbles while going in for game tying TD vs. Broncos.

C. "The Interception"? Brett Favre of Vikings has pass intercepted vs. Saints.

D. Didn't a Vikings kicker miss a kick that could have sent them to the SB, or at least tied the game vs. the Falcons in 1998?

Actually, didn't the Ravens kicker miss a game tying kick last year?

(Note: The Drive is more a series of plays rather than a single play".

E. The Music City Miracle? Bills pull a fast one on Titans special teams.

What else?

Reply to Plays That Cost A Team A Super Bowl Appearance on Tue, 24 Jul 2012 18:53:11 GMT

@<bdi>bob806</bdi> said:

Around 8:30 mark.... That play, and I think the next season when Houston played at Pittsburgh in the AFC Title game, really were the impetus for replay (Renfro, a WR from Houston, was ruled out-of-bounds on a TD reception. Replay showed he was "in," & Houston lost).

That's why I always say Denver & Pittsburgh have been the luckiest football teams, even sports franchises, in the history of American sports. They have been both good, and very very lucky for 40+ years.

The DRIVE also didn't keep the Browns out of the Superbowl. The Drive just tied the game up. The Browns won the coint toss and Kosar's conservative play had the Denver sideline chanting....... "he's playing not to lose".

We won the toss and went conservative. I think that flop series does qualify as keping us out of the SB, although again it is still a series.

I think that was more of a coaching faux pas. Obviously Marty's defense went into "prevent" mode during the drive....when they had controlled Elway all game long. Then in the OT, yes, the conservative play....or was it just a failure of execution?...cost them.

The other thing that cost them?

The Tuck rule. In 2002 AFC game when Tom Brady fumbled against the Raiders but they claimed it was a pass. Raiders should have ended up with the ball and the victory.
