I'll even spot you our D couldn't touch Eli all day, and the defense fell apart.

So the KNR lackeys were even giving Shurmur a Mulligan on probably the dumbest call on a third and one in the last 10 years.

Q: What would you do differently?

1) Not take Richardson out on third down-ever.

2) Not throw 3 yard slant patterns on third and 5.

3) Boy Nice bomb from rocket arm Weeden to Gordon. Did we ever try another one?

0 fer 11. Would you guys like to see 0-16 this year? Hows that for continuity? If we can't beat the Colts or Chiefs, take that one to the bank. Firing Shurmur is addition by subtraction in my book. You can get a Pop Warner guy to call a better game.

Up 14-0 faint (false) hope. If Haslam's first act as owner isn't to fire this bum (worst Browns coach in the last 40 years IMHO) I'll be pissed.

Reply to Was Listening To The Postgame On The Way Home on Wed, 10 Oct 2012 20:16:09 GMT

@<bdi>baconhound</bdi> said:

I am not the hugest Shurmur fan but yesterday is not on him. Weeden didn't play well and the Browns have the worst DBs in the league. You subtract Jackson from the mix and that's trouble. If Trent continues to drop passes you'll continue to see Obi on 3rd down...

I don't think that anyone would have expected this team to have more than 1 or maybe 2 wins against the five teams that we have played so far. So why is everyone acting surprised that we are still winless? Take a look at our depth chart. Our starting lineup and depth is filled with rookies, 2nd year players, and UDFAs. I guess no one remembers analysts expecting only a couple of wins for the Browns this year. Do you honestly think that we are supposed to beat the Giants (or Ravens, Eagles, etc.), and when we don't how does it make sense to blame the coach when we were clearly outmatched with talent? This year is for development not a playoff hunt. Fans need a dose of reality. Also, Shurmur's call to throw on third and one was fine. You need to mix it up; all teams do it. If we ran it and got stuffed, the same people would be complaining how predictable the play calling is. The truth is on that play the problem was bad execution by the players. I am now of the opinion that many Browns fans look only to the negative and enjoy being miserable. Anyways, I don't think that Shurmur will get fired this year. It is my guess that Haslam understands the personnel situation and difficult schedule, and will ultimately judge the coach by the team's performance over the second half of the season when the team has had some time to play together. Go Browns!

DanInNYC

Reply to Was Listening To The Postgame On The Way Home on Wed, 10 Oct 2012 17:13:10 GMT

@<bdi>usfbrown</bdi> said:

I actually completely agree. Being the BMOC as the head football coach of a top 10 program every year is about as good as it gets. That's the only reason why I think that a guy like Saban would say no to coming back to the NFL. He's already been there and it didn't work out all that well.
Not saying it's impossible but recruiting in college is the name of the game, Saban isn't taking this years UTEP squad to a BCS game. Give him 5 years to recruit and they'd be good. Drafting and FA doesn't equate to recruiting. Also a kid who knows you may make or break his career might listen a bit more than a 5 year vet who earns more than you do and yields more power in the locker room. It could be done but it'd be tough...

Saban is a college guy and it is a different game in the NFL

BaconHound

Reply to Was Listening To The Postgame On The Way Home on Tue, 09 Oct 2012 17:01:47 GMT

@<bdi>usfbrown</bdi> said:

No way anyone with a decent career or legacy is gonna come here and coach. Cleveland is a blackhole for coaches and qbs. Why take a chance of tarnishing your reputation and come to this giant mess? I highly doubt we'll get anyone with success as a head coach that will come here.

That was under Lerner. Now Haslam is going to be owner. It all changes.

Besides, the "greatest" coaches in history were guys that were either in their first gig somewhere or in their second gig where they didn't succeed before.

Nice blurb from Lombardi.

As has been said. Shurmer is in way over his head. He won't be here next season.

Heck, he won't be here for the end of this season. The first big decision Haslam will have to make isn't if he is letting Shurmer go. That's a easy call. His big decision is weather he makes Jauron or Childress the interim coach.

It may very well be we already have our next head coach on the staff. If neither of those guys were coaching here, I would think both would be viable candidates.

That's why I would like to see Shurmer canned fairly early. I'd like to see whoever we give the nod have 6-7 games. I think we could see a turnaround of sorts as it is my opinion that coaching from the head position is hurting this team.

Ideally, our next coach is on the team. That way he knows the players, knows who can play and who can't. A new guy is going to want his guys.

As for the next coach, Haslam is going to want to make a splash. He is going to explore Cower behind the scenes and Cower is going to show no interest. My guess is Haslam is going to go all in for Nick Saban. Saban has Cleveland connections, having coached here in the past, and his SEC ties are going to lure Haslam.

I've been watching that dude on sports time ohio the last couple of nights and he's saying the same thing about Saban. It's an interesting thought. The guy has nothing left to prove in college. Jimmy Johnson is the only guy who has had success in both the NFL and in college, it would be an interesting legacy to create for himself if Saban could come here and turn this ship around.

Mark O

Reply to Was Listening To The Postgame On The Way Home on Tue, 09 Oct 2012 16:06:51 GMT

Offense is predictable

There is a reason each of these coordinators FAILED as a HC on other teams. You do't like the play calling? Coordinators feed the HC the plays and he either uses them or asks for a different one.

Please do NOT let any current Browns coaches become HC.

Scrap the West Coast offense. No winning team uses it anymore. Packers and Philly have changed it so much they are no longer a true WC offenses. It's too limiting. The game has changed since the WC offenses hayday.

nicknasti

Reply to Was Listening To The Postgame On The Way Home on Tue, 09 Oct 2012 11:58:11 GMT

The way jim haslam handles this mess upon officially taking over the team will tell us a lot about the man and what we can expect under his ownership...

I am generally not for firing HCs during the regular season except under certain circumstances, i thought crennel and mangini should have been fired mid season 2 seasons in a row each and i think haslam should waste no time putting his house in order because the sooner he starts cleaning house the better off and more organized the browns will be next year for it..

Shurmur as a playcalling coach imo ranks amongst the worst i have ever seen and he needs to be replaced as soon as possible..

I really hope haslam cleans up randy lerners accumulated do nothing mess from the top down and starts anew immediately..

Gips
