Luckily, we forced 8 turnovers.

The shocking thing to me was how unbelievably bad our play calling was. We ran one time I noticed out of a spread (passing) formation, and Trich took it 15 yards for a TD.

The rest of the running plays were out of a 2/3 TE bunch formation. To me with the speed in the NFL, you need to do some misdirection. Running out of the bunch every time is going to get the safeties all over your RB 2-3 yards downfield. This is what I saw most of the game - Low and behold, Clark (Steelers FS) had 9 tackles.

It went both ways. When we brought in 3 WR or spread the field out a bit, we threw everytime. (except the trich TD) We very rarely threw out of the bunch formation.

We run an offense a 13 year old does when he plays Madden. 5 wide when he's passing, Bunch when he's running. If we are going to tip it off that badly, at least put Cribbs in and run the WildDawg to get the extra blocker on running plays.

All that said - who is tops on everyone's wish list for the inevitable coaching change for next year? Could we lure Chip Kelly from Oregon? Would love to see an innovative offensive mind.

That, plus another shut down corner or pass rushing OLB/DE in the first round and this team makes the playoffs next year.

Reply to Coaching Wish List on Wed, 05 Dec 2012 21:36:20 GMT

@<bdi>thenew23</bdi> said:

Since this is a thread about a coaching wish list, I will give my top 5:

1) Chip Kelly - Oregon - His understanding of offense and playing uptempo could bring the kind of identity and attitude this team has lacked for a long time, plus it would be a good fit for Weeden. With so many young players, it might benefit us to utilize our youth and bring some excitement to Cleveland.

2) Pat Shurmur - status quo ... yes, I hate to say it but I am starting to think he's coming around, maybe, sort of, I don't know. We'll find out more this Sunday when we play KC. Really would love to see a convincing victory... ever

3) Bruce Arians - Colts - can't argue with what he has done in his career, especially this season where he has been the interim HC and has been calling plays.

4) Mike McCoy - Denver OC - Another great offensive coach. Understands the importance of running the football and has proven that he can adapt his system to his players instead of vice versa.

5) Toss up... Brian Kelly - Notre Dame, or David Shaw - Stanford - Neither seem to be likely, but this is a "Wishlist". Probably leaning toward Shaw as he has had success running a pro-style offense in college. Plus, look at what he did with Andrew Luck. On the other hand, it's hard to argue with Brian Kelly's history of success.

1. PLease No

2. PLease No

3. Why NOt

4. Really Like

5. NO, and Maybe

Whoever takes over should be offensive-minded and bring in their own OC, but should also consider keeping Jauron and most of his squad to keep running the D (much like Tomlin did with LeBeau).

I will add that this game against the Chiefs is a big time trap game for us.

Shurmer might not be able to save his hide with a win, but he might skin himself if we go out there and lose in miserable fashion.

This is a must win game...make it 3 in a row...get the guys accustomed to stringing 3-4 wins together as that is the way you win in this league.

Agree completely. Despite the Chiefs having the worst record, they have played teams hard at times. They beat the Panthers and Cam Newton last week. They lost to the Broncos by only 17-9. They lost in OT to the Steelers 16-13. They lost to the Ravens by only 9-6. They beat the Saints 27-24.

The Browns by no means are a team that can take beating anyone for granted.

The Gipper

Reply to Coaching Wish List on Wed, 05 Dec 2012 16:15:56 GMT

I will add that this game against the Chiefs is a big time trap game for us.

Well, a lot of that is why I conflicted over Shurmur. Yes, the NFL is now an instant gratification league/a what have you done lately league....but the fact is, some of the greatest coaches in history didn't start out very well.

Became an NFL head coach for the first time when hired by Arizona in January of 2007.

He came to the Cardinals with 10 years of experience as an NFL assistant coach and also played nine seasons in the league as a tight end/H-Back.

I want to see the full season before I decide. I dread getting another coach and having to rebuild yet again. I am tired of that. A new HC could mean dumping of players in favor of "his" guys. The key to any successful franchise is stability. I see the team improving on both sides of the ball, we have talent, which I think speaks well for Heckert staying. I think big issues are how Shurmur calls plays and manages games at times. I think the play calling at times has been too pass happy and repetitive. I would like to see QB adjustments at the line, Shurmur says QB is allowed to audible, but we never see that. That is a coaching failure in my opinion. But I think Shurmur is getting a little bit better. BTW players don't always play for pride etc, look at Philly, getting players to play hard when your season is over is partly pride and partly coaching to some degree, you just can't dismiss that because you don't like the HC. The Browns end up with 6 wins, I think it will be hard to not give Shurmur another year.

runyon27

Reply to Coaching Wish List on Fri, 30 Nov 2012 01:00:59 GMT

Hate to be the bearer of bad news . . . but it doesn't sound like Shurmur's going anywhere:

Q: What are your first impressions of your new team since you took over in mid-October?

A: (Haslam) I think we have better players and we're better coached (than last year). We're 3-8, but if you went back through the season, I could make a case where we could easily be 6-5. Dallas, Philly, Indy are all games I think we should've won. If we win those three games, we're 6-5 and in the hunt for the playoffs, right? We're very close. We weren't competitive against the Giants after jumping off to an early lead, but every other game we've been in in the fourth quarter. As you know, some of them have gone down to the last minute or two.

I think teams definitely take on the personality of their coach. Look at the 49ers or Saints (when Payton was there) or Ravens or even the Steelers. Look at the Chargers and Browns as perfect examples of this from a negative side as well. Look at the Jets...that team talks more than any other and so does their coach with nothing to back it up.

Mark O

Reply to Coaching Wish List on Tue, 27 Nov 2012 16:12:13 GMT

@<bdi>miktoxic</bdi> said:

I've been saying this all along. Keep Shurmur. Give the franchise some stability and see where the future leads. I laugh at how Shurmur gets blamed for everything and everyone else get's a pass. Weeden is a average QB at best. Every head coach in the NFL will tell you on passing plays there are three levels and based on protection and who gets open the QB makes his read and his throw. It isn't rocket science, John Gruden doesn't have a top secret playbook that will make Weeden into Peyton Manning.

BaconHound

Reply to Coaching Wish List on Mon, 26 Nov 2012 23:48:24 GMT

@<bdi>tampadawgs</bdi> said:

UHHHHHH why are they playing hard, NEW OWNER PLAYING FOR A JOB. Shurmer Sucks

I've been harsh on unShurmer, as harsh as anyone. The team was scrapping even before the Haslam purchase if I recall it correctly.

I hate his offense, plain & simple.

Bob806

Reply to Coaching Wish List on Mon, 26 Nov 2012 16:12:25 GMT

@<bdi>bk2072</bdi> said:

Two WRs wide left, single TE right. Offset I right. Wide Oline splits. Ran left.

Not a spread formation true, but certainly not a 2/3 TE Tight obvious running formation. Pittsburgh had 8 in the box but one of those 8 was so was out on the WRs so really only 7 in the box. Lead blocker sealed the run blitzing LB leaving only the S able to make the tackle. He missed. Free lineman was able to seal the backside LB.

It is pretty sad that someone like me can predict what play we're going to run based on the formation. If an idiot like me can do it, how hard do you think it is for defensive coaches who do nothing but study film 18 hours a day to do?

Mark O

Reply to Coaching Wish List on Mon, 26 Nov 2012 16:07:58 GMT

@<bdi>richiswhere</bdi> said:

We ran one time I noticed out of a spread (passing) formation, and Trich took it 15 yards for a TD.
