I just experienced my first "Kinks kick" a few years ago. I was like you and only knew a handful of songs, but thanks to an older friend from work he exposed me to their entire catalog. In my opinion there are three distinct Kinks eras. The first album thru the Percy Soundtrack (63-69). Muswell Hillbillies thru Schoolboys In Disgrace (70-75) and Sleepwalker thru Word Of Mouth (76-84.) There were a few albums after that but they were somewhat different.

Anyway....from that first era, Face To Face, Something Else and The Village Green Preservation Society are stone cold classics, but by and large it's all good. The second era is my least favorite and the most difficult to get into on my opinion. From that era I prefer Muswell Hillbillies. The third era was the Kinks "arena rock" era and I really love this stuff. You MUST get Low Budget and Give The People What They Want. Two very great albums. Also the live album from the Low Budget tour, One More For The Road, is one of my all-time favorite live albums. They were simply on fire.

I hope this helps some.
