You're going to hear lots of proposals over the next few weeks. I'm interested to hear what your ideas are.

Sandy Hook got so much attention because it was, well, indescribably horrible. But since Sandy Hook 734 Americans have also been shot and killed. What steps do you think the government should take to lower the amount of gun violence in this country?

And before the usuals start talking/frothing about the liberal plot to take your guns, let me just let you in on something: Obama can't take your guns, even if he wanted to, which he doesn't. I'll say it again: he can't take your guns. You have a constitutional right to armed self-defense. You don't have a Constitutional right to own every armament under the sun. The Second Amendment is not unlimited. It's also not suddenly irrelevant.

Obama can't take your guns. His proposals are likely to involve background checks, magazine sizes, and the like.

But I'm not so interested in what the usual nuts will say. We already know what that is. I'd rather hear from the other guys. What steps would you take? What do you want to see done?

Reply to Reducing Gun Violence on Thu, 07 Feb 2013 02:27:20 GMT

@<bdi>legacy-fan</bdi> said:

There's nothing much to be said is there? He made a terribly stupid mistake with what were undoubtably good intentions. I hope it makes people think about supplying people with known mental issues with firearms even if they themselves are also armed.
With rights come RESPONSIBILITIES. You can't yell that fire in the theater. You can't pull out a gun and wave it at people, even without firing.

You can't drive through a school zone at 100 mph. Oh, boo hoo, you think those things are some kind of attack on your rights?

Currently, you are being a fool full of hate, lashing out at an entire class of people for a tragedy. Alienating people instead of

He could give a shit less about American kids. This isnt about rights to them. The second amendment isn't going anywhere. This is about sticking it to the liberal commie marxists. This is a dream scenario for them. They go from huge political loser to "defender of rights"

But they overestimate their strength. The American people are sick of them. They failed to get mittens elected, and their power is waning. Sure there's plenty of loud wingnuts like cal willing to throw in with them, but the majority of people are tired of the violence.

If the American people want gun control there will be gun control. That's called democracy and its what they pretend to care about. What happens when they lose? Suddenly they don't love democracy so much anymore?

The Cysko Kid

Reply to Reducing Gun Violence on Fri, 01 Feb 2013 17:58:37 GMT

The NRA now says they're even against universal background checks, a policy they were recently for. But now they don't want those changes made either.

Public support for universal background checks is extremely high, possibly even at 92 percent, per a recent CBS News/New York Times poll. Other polls have put it at 89% and 85%. It's even got strong majority support among NRA members - 75% of NRA members polled want universal background checks.

This is about as bipartisan as any issue gets. It'll be amazing if Congress can't translate that into an actual law.

heckofajobbrownie
