Consider this: At one point, some draftnicks had McCoy going early in round 2 to the Browns. Just absolutely blows my mind for a guy who flat out does NOT have NFL caliber arm talent, backup or otherwise.

At least Texas isn't giving that same McCoy entitlement to his younger brother, David Ash's caddy. You know, the guy who said big brother's problems could all be blamed on the Browns?

Certainly brings Bernie Kosar's personnel eye into question. He said over and over that Colt McCoy had what it takes to win in this league. SF was that rare situation with two "top 10" QBs at the same time (Favre/Rodgers, Montana/Young, Brees/Rivers, etc.). For the most part, the best teams are the teams with the best QBs and if any of those guys go down, the rest of the team is pretty much on par with the rest of the league.

The notion that you can make a bad quarterback good because of the cockpit is bullshit. Always was. Kyle Orton was on a near perfect Denver team and was still Kyle Orton. Shaub is good but not good enough... even with everything around him perfect. Vikings had years where they led the league in rushing and defense and went 7-9.

Manning in, playoffs. Manning out, worst team in the league. Luck in, playoffs. The X-factor is the great quarterback. The rest of the Colts team wasn't as good as the Browns. Put Manning on the Browns, we're the ones in the playoffs every year.

The best teams aren't best all over the field. They have rotations at RB, UDFA guards, etc. They just have the better quarterbacks.

Last year, the Chiefs had a really good roster. More Pro Bowlers than wins. They just sucked at quarterback and that matters more than everything else combined.

That's the NFL. You have to get a great quarterback to be relevant. Haven't seen a Dilfer since Dilfer, which was pre Ty Law Rules and the other changes that followed, almost all against the defense.

Shep

Reply to The Amazing Tale of Colt McCoy on Tue, 27 Aug 2013 02:05:03 GMT

@<bdi>erie-dawg</bdi> said:

Point is McCoy isn't capable of doing that.

Maybe Harbaugh didn't like all the shit he was getting for trading for someone not as good as someone he could've signed as a UDFA.

"Intangibles" really do matter, but the two reasons QBs fail are below-the-bar arm strength (velocity) and an inability to mentally keep up with the complexity and speed of the game. Doesn't really mean you're "stupid," just that you have to process really fast and make your eyes/body keep up. It's not easy.

Weeden's still got plenty to prove. He has a serious A-list arm but the Colts put some heat on him (wow, did Joe Thomas have a rough day in every way or what?) and he did not handle it any better than last year.

Shep

Reply to The Amazing Tale of Colt McCoy on Mon, 26 Aug 2013 16:27:44 GMT

Here is a bit of an older article I found that discusses the reasons certain QBs go bust. It talks about the drafting of Matt Stafford, but the analysis is probably still quite valid.

The only thing I disagree here with it the analysis of Tim Couch not having "intangibles". I think he had the intangibles. But he certainly didn't have the OLine, primarily, and he did come from a gimmick offense in college:

A question is: how would these factors apply to the likes of say, Brady Quinn, Colt McCoy, and other Browns QBs.
