We CAN win this game, but I don't think we will see enough improvement to pull off an away game, against the defending champs, after they got annihilated on national TV. Expecting a good game from Richardson and Cameron (again), and it will be exciting to see Mingo (however limited). Should still be a good one. 27-20 Ravens

thenew23

Reply to Browns vs. Ravens on Sun, 15 Sep 2013 14:33:31 GMT

Flacco is 10 - 0 vs Cleveland

This Interview pretty much confirms my thinking (and why I'm waiting for game three to see what we're really about this Season), in that we're playing our third string OL at RG (who is really a OT backup) and we're missing our star WR (Gordon).

Week 3, we should have both our starting RG and #1 WR back, at that point, I think we'll really see what this Team is going to be like this year.

All that said, I'm afraid I don't see us winning this next game unless Cousins really steps up his game (not likely), but if we do shore up our right side it should be one heck of game.

JAFBF

Reply to Browns vs. Ravens on Sat, 14 Sep 2013 01:18:59 GMT

@<bdi>tour2ma</bdi> said:

Earlier the discussion was centering on comparing YPG passing. My point is that the number of total plays as well as the percentage of pass attempts are both higher now. And thus the passing yardage is higher now than it was in the 80's.

Tour2ma

Reply to Browns vs. Ravens on Sat, 14 Sep 2013 01:13:38 GMT

@<bdi>slowburn</bdi> said:

Leave the sarcasm out altogether... will make any point even more valid.

QB's of old? Geez... not like we're going back to the Sonny Jurgensen era. The days of the pot-belled ball slingers were long gone by the time the earlier group being discused here came around. I don't think the current crop of greats rate significantly higher than the Kelly-Marino-etc. era. Just my opinion... and it is based in no small part on the earlier era names actually calling plays

I'd also argue that you are making a case for more for thrower/ atheletes, developing throwing muscle and muscle memory, than you are QB's. Today's college QB's get plays AND audibles from the sideline. It actually saddens me. The current era of top NFL QB's may be the last capable of recognizing a defense and even calling the ocassional play.

The 80's QB's were definitely not passing in a "run era". The 80's was a transition decade culminating in pass oriented innovations like the Houston Cougars' Run & Shoot. Coincidentally radios were put in NFL QB helmets in 1989... and the pace of the game has quickened ever since.

Tour2ma

Reply to Browns vs. Ravens on Sat, 14 Sep 2013 00:14:12 GMT

@<bdi>tim-couch-pulls-out</bdi> said:

The Ravens WR/TE corps is pretty depleted with Pitta and Jones being out. The only real WR threat is Smith but Haden should have that on lock down. Of course that means Skrine on their #2 WR who I believe is 6' 5".

Hopefully Mingo is a great addition to the pass rush. Really, just about everybody needs to run "well," as Rodgers and the Pack have found out. Running great, like the greatest of our time? Doesn't even get you to the big dance and often leaves you outside the playoffs (AP, Vikes).

Few of the top RBs of the last decade (Peterson, Jackson, MJD, Chris Johnson, etc.) have even been to a Super Bowl. For a stretch of five years, there were no 1,000 yard rushers (broken last year).

Just enough to keep'em honest. But it won't bail you out of anything. You can win without a great running back but it's almost impossible to win without a great quarterback. Been that way for about a decade now.

Man, one back had 100 yards last week and it was the star of "Roots." I'm not sure Manning, Brady, Rodgers, or Brees know the name of the guy they hand off to half the time. They probably refer to him as "guy who lines up behind me."
