Here is some trivia on Cincinnati football, most, but not all, Bengals:

Answers:

1. Cincinnati had a team in the NFL that played in 1921 before folding. What was the name of that team?

The Cincinnati Celts

2. Cincinnati had a team in the NFL in 1933 and 1934 before folding. What was the name of that team?

The Cincinnati Reds. (the NFL had a tendency to name football teams the same as a towns baseball team. There were also Pittsburgh Pirates, Detroit Tigers, Cleveland Indians, NY Yankees etc.. The only vestige left of that today is the New York Giants which were named after that cities NL team...which has since moved. After the Cardinals move to Arizona no city had a football and baseball team with the same name.

but...note, the St. Louis Cardinals were NOT named after the St. Louis baseball team. In fact, those Cardinals spent nearly 40 years in Chicago before moving to St. Louis.

3. What dubious record do those 1933 and 1934 Cincinnati teams hold?

Since the NFL went to a playoff system...which also officially began in 1933, those 2 Reds teams hold the record for having the 2 seasons scoring points for a single season. In the 18 games they played, they were shut out 12 times.

4. In Paul Browns 8 season coaching the Bengals, how many winning seasons did he have?

He had 4 winning seasons....plus one .500 season

5. Cincinnatians are apparently obsessed with their schmekels. Since their inception in 1968, now many people named Johnson have led the Bengals in rushing? Give their names.

Essex Johnson, Pete Johnson, and Rudi Johnson......but no Dick Johnson.

6. Apparently, FYI, the Brown family was NOT hold the majority ownership interest in the Bengals. Who did?

Austin Knowlton. He was an architect and contractor who, among other things, built about a dozen buildings on the Ohio State Campus.

The Brown family did not actually attain majority ownership of the Bengals until 2011.

7. When the Bengals were originally founded in 1968, there was actually proposal to have their helmet designed basically as it is now, with the stripes (which they did adopt in 1981). However, that proposal had a different color scheme (not the black and orange). What two colors were proposed?

Turqoise and yellow

8. Which Bengals player actually sat on Cincinnati's City Council when he played for the Bengals?

(maybe they needed him to control Jerry Springer)

Reggie Williams....graduate of Dartmouth

9. The Bengals have just one radio affiliate that broadcasts their games which is north of Columbus. Where is this station located?

WTIG in Massillon. Obviously that makes sense, no.

10. Who is the Bengals backup QB, and which two teams did he play for before joining the Bengals?

Josh Johnson, who played for the Browns. He was signed in December 2012 after both McCoy and Weeden got hurt. Also, prior to that he played for the Sacremento Mountain Lions of the UFL....and also did a stint with the Tampa Bay Bucs.

We didn't see him in the game yesterday. Perhaps the Bengals would have been better off to play him, the way Dalton played.

11. A. Which famous offensive scheme, more associated with another city, was actually supposedly formulated in Cincinnati with the Bengals?

The West Coast offense....an adaptation of Paul Browns offense when he coached the Browns, but the twerks were made by Bill Walsh as OC of the Bangles.

B. Which famous defensive scheme, more associated with another city, was actually formulated in Cincinnati with the Bengals?

The Zone Blitz, developed by Dick LeBeau when he was HC of the Bengals.

12. Per Pro Football References "Career Average" statistic, which is a stat that tries to boil down a players total career to a single digit that represents overall production, which 3 Bengals have been the most productive players in the history of that franchise?
