5. Against which playoff opponents...and when...have the Browns played a game into overtime?

6. Against one playoff opponent the Browns only gained nine (9) yards passing in a game. What opponent and @ when?

7. In one playoff game the Browns only gained 86 total yards. What opponent and when? (hint: it is NOT the same opponent as in Q.6)

8. Which team defeated the Browns in a playoff game by a 34-0 score?

9. The most rushing yards the Browns ever gained in a postseason game was 251 yards. Who...and when...was that opponent?

Here's a good account from http://www.profootballhof.com/history/release.aspx?release_id=369 .

Graham looked at his hands. He was having a terrible game-2 completions in 14 attempts. Blindsided on the game's second play from scrimmage, he had fumbled and the Lions had gone on to score a touchdown. He had thrown an interception that led to a Detroit field goal.

Now he had one more chance.

"My hands were chapped terrible," he said. "I had no feel on my passes. I don't know what it was-I tried spitting on them, everything I could think of to moisten them. But they were chapped, and, for some reason, I just could not pass well at all that day."

On the first play from scrimmage with 1:54 to go, Graham dropped back, ready to execute the play messenger guard Chuck Noll had just brought in from Brown, who called all the plays. Graham set and threw.

"It was a terrible pass," he said later.

Carl Karilivacz intercepted. The rookie defensive back, a twenty-third-round draft selection, simply slammed shut the door on the Cleveland Browns while Edwin Anderson stared up at the gray December sky in joyous wonder.

Tour2ma

Reply to Playoff Fever Trivia on Fri, 08 Nov 2013 19:04:14 GMT

@<bdi>the-gipper</bdi> said:

Why not? After 9 games the Browns are at least "in the hunt" for a playoff spot. And when is the last time we could say that this late in the season, what 2007? So here is a trivia set about Browns playoff history. It isn't that easy I don't think. But give it a try.:

Friday PM means answer time for these:

1. What is the number of most consecutive years in which the Browns have failed to make the playoffs?

The Ten years since the Browns made the playoffs in 2002 is the longest this franchise has ever gone without making the playoffs. Thank you Randy Lerner. Hopefully that string can be broken this year. Previously it had been 7 years between making it in 1972 and then not until 1980.

2. Not counting the AAFC/early NFL days where the Browns hold the record in all leagues of making the most consecutive playoffs, what is the next most number of consecutive years in which the Browns made the playoffs, and give the era?

It is the 5 years from 1985 to 1989 inclusive.

3. In Browns playoff history, two teams have scored more than 50 points against them in a playoff game. Name those two teams (and when it happened if you can).

1957 the Lions beat the Browns 59-14 in the NFL title game

In 1967 the Cowboys beat them 52-14 in a divison game.

(FYI, the Browns scored 50 points in a playoff game once....against the Lions in the the mid 50s)

4. Against which playoff opponent..and when... in their history did the Browns gain the most total yardage in a playoff game?

It was the the Double OT game vs. the Jets in the 1986 (game played in '87) playoffs 558 yards. BK threw for more yards in that game than any Browns QB before or since, regular or postseason.

5. Against which playoff opponents...and when...have the Browns played a game into overtime?

Just the two opponents, back to back in the 1986 playoffs. The 23-20 win vs. the Jets and then the 23-20 loss to the Broncos. One week apart. No other playoff game in their history has ever gone to OT.

6. Against one playoff opponent the Browns only gained nine (9) yards passing in a game. What opponent and @ when?

The Lions in the Browns 17-16 loss in the 1953 NFL title game.

This was a net figure. They were only 3-16 for 38 yards, but also lost 29 yards due to sacks.

Otto Graham was only 2 of 15, for 20 yards. How a guy that good could play that bad in such an important game is a mystery to me.

The Browns did gain 182 yards on 36 rushing attempts in that game however, but came up the one pt. short.

7. In one playoff game the Browns only gained 86 total yards. What opponent and when? (hint: it is NOT the same opponent as in Q.6)

This was the Eastern Conference playoff game vs. the NY Giants in 1958. Just before the Giants lost "The Greatest Game Ever Played".

The Browns lost 10-0 and had that net of 86 yards. They had 13 rushing attempts for 24 yds, and were 10-27 passing for 114 yards, but lost 52 yards on sacks. This was not Otto Graham, he had retired. Milt Plum and Jim Ninowski shared QB duties in that game. Jim Brown only attempted 7 carries for 8 yards.

Mind boggling, ain't it.

8. Which team defeated the Browns in a playoff game by a 34-0 score?

The Baltimore Colts in the 1968 NFL(NFC) title game. Revenge for the 27-0 1964 loss I guess. However, those Colts then cacked vs. the Jets in SB III

9. The most rushing yards the Browns ever gained in a postseason game was 251 yards. Who...and when...was that opponent?

It was the 1985 game against the Dolphins, where the Browns with Mack and Byner running got up to a 21-3 halftime lead, but then could generate no points after that and lost to Dan Marino and the Dolphins 24-21. Rookie Bernie Kosar was 10 of 19 for only 66 yards. Byner had 161 rushing yards, Mack 56, and Curtis Dickey 28 for the Browns.

But it wasn't all Marino that beat the Browns that day. Ron Davenport ran for 2 TDs including a 1 yarder for the winner.

10. In their AAFC days the Browns won all 4 titles, but had to play 5 games in those years, against 3 opponents. Name these 3 AAFC postseason opponents.

In 1946 the Browns beat the NY Yankees in the title game

In 1947 the Browns again beat the NY Yankees in the title game

In 1948 the Browns beat the Buffalo Bills in the title game.

In 1949 the Browns again beat the Bills in a conference playoff game

Then in the Final AAFC game ever played the Browns defeated the SF 49ers.

11. In their history the Browns have had to play 2 different opponents who each played at one time in two different cities. Name these 2 opponents.

First, the Colts whom they played in both Baltimore in 1964/1968/1971, and in Indianapolis in 1987.

The the Raiders, Oakland Raiders in 1980, then LA Raiders in 1982.

Of course, then there is the case of the Rams. They were after all the Cleveland Rams when they won the 1945 NFL title....then were the LA Rams when they faced the Cleveland Browns 3 times in the 1950s. But the Browns only faced them when in LA.

12. In their playoff history the Browns have had to face two different franchises that went by the same name. What are these two franchises?

Well, they are: The Buffalo Bills. First the AAFC Buffalo Bills as noted above whom they beat twice, then in 1989 they played the "new" Buffalo Bills, i.e. the franchise that originated with the AFL in 1960.

(Under one theory it could be said that that 1989 game was the old Buffalo Bills vs. the new Buffalo Bills, because when the AAFC merged with the NFL in 1950 several existing AAFC franchises also merged with the teams that were coming into the NFL. The Buffalo Bills merged with the Browns, and the LA Dons merged with the SF 49ers)

13. Post 1970 the Browns joined the AFC. Name those AFC current AFC teams which the Browns have NEVER faced in the postseason: (hint: 6 teams)

Bengals, Ravens, Jaguars, Texans, Chargers, Chiefs (that means they have faced the other nine AFC teams: Pats, Jets, Bills, Dolphins, Steeler, Colts, Oilers/Tits, Broncos, Raiders)

14. As we know, the Browns have not been to the Super Bowl, so, since 1970 they have not faced any current NFC teams in the playoffs. But, between 1950 and 1970 the Browns were part of the NFL...or now the NFC. Name the current NFC teams that the Browns DID face during that period.

Hint: 6 teams

Giants, Cowboys, Lions, Packers, Vikings, Rams

(that means they have never faced the following teams in the postseason: Eagles/Redskins/Bears/Cardinals/Seahawks/Saints/Falcons/Panthers/Bucs

Note on 13/14: The Browns played the Colts both as members of the NFL and AFC. So do not include them in either answer.

Note Also: The Browns have never faced the 49ers as a member of the NFL...or the AFC...but DID face them as a member of the AAFC!

Bonus#1: Simple question: since their inception in 1946, how many years have the Browns appeared in the postseason?

They have appeared in postseason play in 28 years, which is like the third most in history.

Bonus #2: What is the Browns overall postseason record?

They are 16-20 overall (including AAFC years)

Why not? After 9 games the Browns are at least "in the hunt" for a playoff spot. And when is the last time we could say that this late in the season, what 2007? So here is a trivia set about Browns playoff history. It isn't that easy I don't think. But give it a try.:

1. What is the number of most consecutive years in which the Browns have failed to make the playoffs?

Had a dry spell in the 70's ('73 - '79???), but still falls a bit shy of our current 10 years and counting drought...

Check the current 11 years now is the longest in Browns history

2. Not counting the AAFC/early NFL days where the Browns hold the record in all leagues of making the most consecutive playoffs, what is the next most number of consecutive years in which the Browns made the playoffs, and give the era?

The mid to late eighties' Bernie era netted us 5 in a row, '85 to '89 Check

3. In Browns playoff history, two teams have scored more than 50 points against them in a playoff game. Name those two teams (and when it happened if you can).

Lions in late 50's NFL Championship game and Cowboys in a late 60's playoff game... very disappointed in the latter, but I think we paid the 'Boys back the following year...

Check on both

4. Against which playoff opponent..and when... in their history did the Browns gain the most total yardage in a playoff game?

Wow.. know we went over 400 vs Broncos in the Mile High rematch...

NO

5. Against which playoff opponents...and when...have the Browns played a game into overtime?

Broncos of course in "The Drive" game...

Not the only one (already answered)

6. Against one playoff opponent the Browns only gained nine (9) yards passing in a game. What opponent and @ when?

We had a couple atrocious showing vs. the Vikings in a MN deep freeze, but it's prolly an old "blizzard" game...

It was not Minn.

7. In one playoff game the Browns only gained 86 total yards. What opponent and when? (hint: it is NOT the same opponent as in Q.6)

???

8. Which team defeated the Browns in a playoff game by a 34-0 score?

Baltimore... may have been the Tom Matte game...

Check

9. The most rushing yards the Browns ever gained in a postseason game was 251 yards. Who...and when...was that opponent?

???

10. In their AAFC days the Browns won all 4 titles, but had to play 5 games in those years, against 3 opponents. Name these 3 AAFC postseason opponents.

The original Buffalo Bills for sure were one (trivia earlier in season)...

That is one

11. In their history the Browns have had to play 2 different opponents who each played at one time in two different cities. Name these 2 opponents.

Green Bay (who had a game or two a year in Milwaukee once upon a time) is a good candidate...

I'll guess Minnesota did the same...

No, already answered. While Green Bay played a few games in Milwaukee, the team did not move, obviously.

12. In their playoff history the Browns have had to face two different franchises that went by the same name. What are these two franchises?

I don't think I understand the question...

Two totally separate football franchises....but both had the exact same name. You basically got it with one of your above answers.

13. Post 1970 the Browns joined the AFC. Name those AFC current AFC teams which the Browns have NEVER faced in the postseason: (hint: 6 teams)

Buffalo - Baltimore - Cincinnati - San Diego - Jacksonville - Tennessee or Houston (depending on how you count the Oilers, who we did play in a WC game)

You got 4 out of 6.

2. Not counting the AAFC/early NFL days where the Browns hold the record in all leagues of making the most consecutive playoffs, what is the next most number of consecutive years in which the Browns made the playoffs, and give the era?

The mid to late eighties' Bernie era netted us 5 in a row, '85 to '89

4. Against which playoff opponent..and when... in their history did the Browns gain the most total yardage in a playoff game?

Wow.. know we went over 400 vs Broncos in the Mile High rematch...

5. Against which playoff opponents...and when...have the Browns played a game into overtime?

Broncos of course in "The Drive" game...

6. Against one playoff opponent the Browns only gained nine (9) yards passing in a game. What opponent and @ when?

We had a couple atrocious showing vs. the Vikings in a MN deep freeze, but it's prolly an old "blizzard" game...

7. In one playoff game the Browns only gained 86 total yards. What opponent and when? (hint: it is NOT the same opponent as in Q.6)

???

8. Which team defeated the Browns in a playoff game by a 34-0 score?

Baltimore... may have been the Tom Matte game...

11. In their history the Browns have had to play 2 different opponents who each played at one time in two different cities. Name these 2 opponents.

Green Bay (who had a game or two a year in Milwaukee once upon a time) is a good candidate...

I'll guess Minnesota did the same...

12. In their playoff history the Browns have had to face two different franchises that went by the same name. What are these two franchises?

I don't think I understand the question...

Vikings - Eagles - Lions - Giants - Rams - Cowboys

Note on 13/14: The Browns played the Colts both as members of the NFL and AFC. So do not include them in either answer.

Bonus#1: Simple question: since their inception in 1946, how many years have the Browns appeared in the postseason?
