I think to complete the set you want a pretty big guy, a bell cow. All three of the above are excellent receivers out of the backfield but even though Obie's 220, he isn't REALLY a power runner.

The Boston College kid (6', 227) literally has a thousand yards in the past FOUR GAMES. He's just going off. We all know about James Wilder and Carlos Hyde (who I love). I could see one of those three big backs in an orange helmet next fall.

Hyde is seen as a 3/4 round guy now but that was before he just laid 249 on Illinois. Now has over a thousand in 7 games, I think. I fully expect both him and Williams to rise to be viable mid to late 2nd round picks.

Keep in mind Bernard Pierce (who I wish we had) was a third rounder. I don't think any RBs went round one last year. The best value seems to be around early round 3.

Reply to Draft: Running Backs on Fri, 22 Nov 2013 19:30:16 GMT

@<bdi>the-gipper</bdi> said:

Watch the line play... It's not simply a matter of opposing D's stacking the box against to stop our run. Does not seem to matter whether we zone or drive block, it is rare that at least one of our O-line is not defeated. Remained surprisingly true even after Cousins was mercifully returned to the bench.

Tour2ma

Reply to Draft: Running Backs on Fri, 22 Nov 2013 18:29:56 GMT

And that.

It's more simple than that- the rules are bent to favor passing attacks and big scores. You can't grind it out against the Broncos when Manning is putting up 35 points on your defense. However you do have to have enough semblance of a running game to make the other team respect play action, or else your quarterback is going to get killed.

Agree with Couch. It's really tough to win in today's league with a run-based offense giving ANY back enough carries to gain 1,600 or 1,800 yards. For instance, the Niners can obviously run the ball but now that they don't have two QBs combining for a 104 passer rating, they're not so ominous anymore. AP's Vikings were only relevant the year Favre was throwing for 4,000 yards. Seattle runs a lot but they also have a terrific QB consistently in the 100 passer rating area (and the league's best defense).

If you run the ball a lot, it means you ain't passing a lot, which almost certainly means you don't have a great QB. Or you'd be passing more. Because that's what wins in today's league. As Aikman said, it's tough to keep up with the passing teams by grinding it out... because long drives are chock filled with peril. The more plays, the higher the likelihood of a false start, hold, fumble, whatever.

Adrian Peterson is the best running back of our generation, one of the best of all time. Truly an elite talent, a marvel... and what has it mean to the Vikings, really? What did Steven Jackson's billion yards mean to the Rams? Well, mostly it meant neither team had a great QB during their careers with the exception of Favre, the year the Vikings had to choke away their Super Bowl appearance so we could have a feelgood story in New Orleans (!).

Honestly, wouldn't you love to be the back taking handoffs from Peyton Manning? Like, the defense is really focused on you?

Having a good run blocking O Line is primarily based on having quality OGs. Our OGs are the weak link on this line, and I suspect it possible that that position could be a draft priority. As I stated elsewhere I really like what I have seen out of David Yankey OG Stanford. He will be a guy that could be there in the Browns draft wheelhouse with one of their 1st round picks.

The Gipper

Reply to Draft: Running Backs on Wed, 20 Nov 2013 04:21:27 GMT

I really like Dion Lewis & he could be very special paired with Carlos Hyde (3rd round).
I agree . I would like to just see us add a power back for short yardage. Dion was amazing before he got hung out over the middle and broke his leg.

jcam222

Reply to Draft: Running Backs on Wed, 20 Nov 2013 00:56:09 GMT

Yeah... there was that step...

	Other Draft Notes:
• The senior running back class is one of the weakest in recent memory, but two prospects have helped themselves as much as anyone this season: Ohio State running back Carlos Hyde and Boston College running back Andre Williams. Both have appeared on this weekly feature in the past as players who have helped themselves, but they continue to boost their draft stock as the season stretches into mid-November. The running back position will be dominated by underclassmen in the early rounds, but both Hyde and Williams are top-three senior running backs in my opinion.

Hyde rushed for a career-best 246 yards Saturday against Illinois, averaging 10.3 yards per carry and finishing with five total touchdowns. His game film the past few years was average at best and he appeared to be nothing more than a late rounder entering the season, but he has been extremely impressive in 2013, running with purpose, decisiveness and hunger. Hyde is currently my No. 2 senior running back and is 53 rushing yards away from becoming the first running back under Urban Meyer to eclipse the 1,000-yard rushing mark.

Williams would be more of a household name if he played at a different program, but nonetheless, he leads all of FBS in rushing yards (1,810), which is 371 yards more than the next-best rushing total. Like Hyde, Williams has been productive due to his combination of power and drive, refusing to be stopped. He has been a workhorse with almost 300 carries this season and is using his breakout senior season to get the attention of NFL scouts.

Shep

Reply to Draft: Running Backs on Mon, 18 Nov 2013 16:09:59 GMT

Oh, I totally agree that you want a few different looks at RB and the days of having a guy get 2,000 yards from scrimmage seem over. But Dion Lewis looked so good in preseason action, he had the entire staff psyched. They still are.

Now I like Fozzy Whitaker, a similar guy. He has natural quicks and is a run/catch guy. I like Obie. I think those three will be on the team next year but we need the bell cow, the big guy who will hit the hole and give you 2nd and 5 instead of 2nd and 9. We need McGahee before the knee injury, maybe five years ago. Andre Brown right now.

Honestly, a healthy Lewis and Obie would've been given us a nice rotation if we hadn't become strangely fixated on McGahee.

Shep
