There's far more busts than there are players with talent that fall through the cracks.

A bust is a bust is a bust. There's nothing you can do to really predict who will bust. It's much tougher to be a QB in the NFL in 2013 than it was in 1973. These guys are superior athletic talents, honing their QB skills from a young age. Add to that the fact that scouting in 1973 was a joke, and it all points to the fact that it's much harder for a guy to fall through the cracks now. Good talent is recognized. Sometimes early, sometimes late, but it still tends to be recognized.

The internet age makes scouting a breeze. If you know what you're looking for and have access to game tape, you can be a scout. I can scout hundreds of players without leaving this Starbucks.

It's included in the point. It was much easier to be a QB in the running era, therefore QB's coming from smaller schools had a much easier time making it than they do nowadays.

McCown is hardly "making it", and even still he was taken in the third round. Roethlisberger was a first round pick. Yes, technically a "smaller school QB", but he was recognized early as being a great talent. Hardly flying under the radar. Same for Flacco.

Tony Romo does fit. A UDFA from a FCS school, nobody expected him to be a franchise QB. I maintain that he still isn't one, but that's an argument for a later date.

Now, it's different. QB's are attending passing camps and 7 on 7 workshops from middle school. They're playing in offenses throwing the ball 40+ times per game, every game, from B-Team football all the way until their senior year of college. By the time a QB reaches the combine, they've thrown somewhere in the vicinity of 5,000 passes in games. That's not including the 60-70 throws in practice every day.

In high school, our QB coach had our QB's throw 30 passes before they could even put on their pads.

Well, right now, I'd take about any D III quarterback over We-done. See below.

@<bdi>gftchris</bdi> said:

As long as he can do it with 500lbs of pass rush in his face, we're golden.

That's what I'm talking about Roach. OK- I'm convinced- with zero pressure on him, the kid can throw a football with more accuracy than any human being on the planet. However, though extreme accuracy under no pressure conditions is a nice attribute, we've seen with We-done it takes way more than that to be a top level starting quarterback in the NFL. Like how long does it take him to load up that amazing accuracy? He won't have 5 seconds in the NFL to toss those 50 yard rainbows to Gordon. I'll let TCPO comment on his mechanics- does he have that Marino hair trigger release, or we seeing a sloooow windup before the pitch? How fast can he read a pro defense? Peyton Manning can do that in about 0.2 seconds, We-done can't do it in 2.0 Like I said, in the NFL you're not looking at just one target- on a lot of plays, you may have five, all moving in different directions- and BTW- have to keep 1\2 an eye where those 300 pound uglies from the other team are that want to squash you.

Who knows? The kid could be another Brian Hoyer gem in hiding- but you have to wonder- if he was all that and a bag of chips, the Cowboys would have protected him on the regular roster. Garrett used to be a college and NFL qb- you'd think he'd have seen gold dust if it was there.

hoorta

Reply to Alex Tanney signed as backup QB on Wed, 27 Nov 2013 18:09:11 GMT

@<bdi>tim-couch-pulls-out</bdi> said:

This just shows how easy it was to be a QB in the 70's, 80's and 90's.

Yeah, it was simple.

Actually there were less NFL spots, but they found QBs from more obscure colleges because they were looking for pro style QBs. Your big schools, Oklahoma, USC, Big Ten etc were all run-oriented systems back then.
