TAMPA -- In his first official comments since losing his job as Browns general manager, Phil Savage said, "I don't want to talk about it."

Savage poked his head into the Super Bowl media center and was chagrined to see a Cleveland reporter bird-dogging him.

Here's how the five-minute conversation went:

Me: "So tell me what happened?"

Savage: "You'd have to figure that out."

Me: "You had to be surprised at how abruptly it ended for you."

Savage: "Nothing surprises anybody in this league. I think I was more surprised that we trade for Shaun Rogers, he has the year that he had and we go 4-12. That's more surprising to me."

Me: "So what happened to cause that 4-12?"

Savage: "I really don't want to talk. I hope you can appreciate that. It's in the past. Maybe one day."

Me: "How do you feel about George Kokinis replacing you as Browns GM?"

Savage: (no response).

Me: "What are you plans now?"

Savage: "I don't know yet. Obviously I'm looking around, checking into a lot of different areas. I'm a football guy. I've worked 22 years in a row. I enjoy football. I love the sport. It's something I've always done. I certainly would want to stay close to it."

Me: "Have the Detroit Lions talked to you about joining their organization?"

Savage: "I've talked to a lot of teams. I'll leave it at that."

Me: "Can the Browns win next year?"

Savage: "I don't know. It's someone else's concern now."

Me: "C'mon, you had to be shocked at the way everything went down."

Savage: "I don't know what to say other than I really don't want to talk about it now."

Reply to Cleveland Browns ex-GM Phil Savage not talking about his firing on Fri, 30 Jan 2009 18:45:47 GMT

@<bdi>rich4eagle</bdi> said:
He brought in Frye that was his personal choice. Still.... Savage left it better than when he got it. You made some valid points but he did put some playmakers and pro bowlers on our team. Fisk was a waste, yes, and if Romeo and Phil had half a brain in the first place we would have ran the 4-3 for one season while we drafted guys to fit the 3-4 so we didn't overload on stopgap FAs, but we wanted a change and we wanted it NOW and we got what we were asking for now didn't we?

Tobalaz

Reply to Cleveland Browns ex-GM Phil Savage not talking about his firing on Fri, 30 Jan 2009 17:42:48 GMT

@<bdi>cardiac-kid</bdi> said:
It was time for a change... but lets not forget Phil made some huge moves for this team.

I think that sums it up. If you know you've been fired for behaving like an ass, why WOULD you want to talk about it? The fact that he can't find a diplomatic and self-effacing way to talk about it also demonstrates the same shortcomings that caused his other embarrassments. Maybe there was an ugly scene. I don't really care. The housecleaning that Randy Lerner did is one of the things that made sense to me.

kshutchins

Reply to Cleveland Browns ex-GM Phil Savage not talking about his firing on Fri, 30 Jan 2009 08:08:11 GMT

@<bdi>ytownbrownsbacker</bdi> said:
Rucker was a good move.

Yes, in theory drafting a TE was a very good move, for the reasons you cited.

But I need to see it in practice.

Rucker was a good move. K2 was chirping all last winter about a new contract. He worked out away from the team in miami. He asked to be traded before the trading deadline this year even before the whole staph thing. I think him and Savage have been butting heds for a long while. Rucker was suppose to be K2's wakeup call, but RAC never played him so we don't know if Rucker can play or not.

YtownBrownsBacker

Reply to Cleveland Browns ex-GM Phil Savage not talking about his firing on Fri, 30 Jan 2009 04:45:41 GMT

The Rucker trade was almost a necessity.

After a deal fell through that sent Rogers to the Cincinnati Bengals for a third-round and fifth-round pick, the Lions rebounded by sending Rogers to Cleveland in exchange for a third-round choice and cornerback Leigh Bodden. SAVAGE TRASHING LERNER IN TAMPA?

Posted by Mike Florio on January 28, 2009, 11:08 p.m.

There was a buzz in Radio Row on Wednesday regarding the presence in Tampa of former Browns G.M. Phil Savage.

More specifically, there are rumors that Savage is bad-mouthing the man who fired Savage, Browns owner Randy Lerner.

Lerner fired Savage not long after the Browns concluded a disappointing 4-12 season, which featured a string of embarrassments involving Savage, including a public spat with tight end Kellen Winslow and the badly misguided decision to send an e-mail to a fan including a profane message.
