Second,

Of the 30 QBs who have won Super Bowls, only 28 of them were drafted.

(Steve Young was taken in the 1st round of the supplemental draft, and Kurt Warner was undrafted).

Using the various measures of central tendency, here is their average draft position (overall)

Mean - 52.68

Median - 17.5

Mode - 1 (7)

Also, 17 of 28 (>60%) were drafted in the top 32, and

13 of 28 (>45%) were drafted in the top 12

Third,

Of the Top 25 QBs in All-time Win Percentage, only 24 of them were drafted,

(agan Steve Young was taken in the supp. draft)

Again using the various measures, here is their average draft position (overall)

Mean - 47.875

Median - 20.5

Mode - 1 (4)

Also, 12 out of 24 (50%) were drafted in the top 14

and Lastly,

There were 18 QBs drafted #1 overall between 1970 and 2010

(I won't include 2011-2013 b/c I'll give a 4 year cushion to the newer QBs)

Of those, 7 (39%) were Super Bowl Champions, and they combined for 14 Super Bowls total.

They combined for a .461 Win Pct.

9 out of 18 (50%) had career win percentages over .500

[Newest additions - C.Newton (.500) and A.Luck (.655)]

Of the names, you could easily consider 6 out of 18 complete busts, and

there are 3 others on the bubble (Palmer, Stafford, Bradford), but

overall 50% were solid draft picks, and again 7 won Super Bowls

Reply to Interesting QB Draft Information on Mon, 09 Dec 2013 02:41:44 GMT

@<bdi>tim-couch-pulls-out</bdi> said:

It depends on what you deem as professional. Do I get paid for this? Yes. Is this my job? I guess you could say so. Am I employed by the NFL? Not at the moment.

I have a documented history of being right about Browns drafts, as that's all I really have done research on in the past. You can find all of my posts on this website, if you care to. You'll see that I, at least, can recognize players of a system and am decently succinct in my predictions of NFL players. I do have my weaknesses, however. I am one of the only people in the US that owns a James Davis Browns jersey, besides James Davis himself.

I do agree that a franchise QB has a huge impact. I have been adamant about that. But I don't agree that you have to trade up for one, as it has rarely worked in the last decade.

Here is a breakdown of all of the first round picks that have started this season, including their draft position and terms of their trades:

If we picked at one, I would say have at Bridgewater. We don't pick at one, however. Trading up for a QB would require a sacrifice of at least two-three extra picks, one of which being our other first rounder. That's two-three impact players we'd be losing out on, just to move up and grab a QB.

It's not worth it. Especially to take a QB who honestly isn't much better than his contemporaries.

His stats are comparable to Bortles and are miles behind Carr's. His size is a question mark. He would require a perfect scenario in order to succeed.

He can disagree with me all he wants. It's his opinion.

Mine is that Bridgewater won't have a career that is reflective of the #1 overall pick. Partly because I believe his career will be cut short due to injury. Partly because I believe that he's going to go to a team that will rely on him too heavy, too soon. Partly because I don't believe he's faced enough tough talent ( I mean, look at Florida) to be ready to be a day one starter in the NFL. And, unfortunately, the number one overall pick has to be a day one starter and make a quantifiable improvement in his team from the get-go.

I like Bridgewater. I was heavy on the Bridgewater bandwagon to begin this season. If he were a mid round pick, with less pressure on him and maybe going to a team that won't rely on him completely, I think he goes on to have a very good career. But he's going to end up in Houston, or in Jacksonville and those teams have way too much wrong with them other than just QB and not enough draft picks to address everything.

Bridgewater would thrive in Cleveland just because we have the talent at skill positions to help temper the learning curve, but more importantly, there's a solid offensive line and a decent overall defense to help him.

Also, I can't believe he wears a glove on his throwing hand... red flag? He does have potential to make some explosive plays in the passing game which is nice to see, but I'm curious to see his measurables from the combine and pro day...

Bortles - played a good all-around game, and looked good in cold weather. I didn't see the whole game, but what I did see he was accurate on a lot of short passes, and did not make mistakes which has pretty much been his MO all season. He is mobile and moves well in the pocket, but does not throw the most accurate deep ball. Still on the fence with him...

Carr - I didn't stay up to see the 4th quarter, but what I did see Carr continued to look pretty good. He threw 2 ugly interceptions when he tried to force deep throws, but was able to drive down for 3 TDs a really good Utah St defense. Carr throws the short ball and makes intermediate throws like a starting NFL QB, but I've watched a lot of his games and he does not throw the nicest deep ball, but I'd say he was the most impressive of this bunch over the weekend...

Next up... Bowl games. I'll post a list of interesting ones, as related to QB scouting, and possible WRs/RBs if I get time to make that list...

thenew23

Reply to Interesting QB Draft Information on Sat, 07 Dec 2013 18:22:45 GMT

I think some of you guys are mixing up a quick release with getting rid of the ball quickly

Richiswhere

Reply to Interesting QB Draft Information on Sat, 07 Dec 2013 00:02:49 GMT

@<bdi>gftchris</bdi> said:

The problem I have with anointing Hoyer is the small sample set.
I am not anointing Hoyer, but in addition to his decisiveness & quick release, this TEAM performed at a higher level with him as QB. To me, that's a sign of having a LEADER out there on the field. I think, at the very least, he is a very serviceable NFL QB. While I agree that we should draft a QB in 2014, I am NOT sold on any of the top guys being "all that" & would be fine with our QB pick NOT starting early on. I know who I like, but I'm just another Fan...I'll trust our FO on this one.

Makes great, quick decisions.

Campbell and Weedone take precious seconds to

than Weedone.

Neither of them understands "anticipation", and Weedone might

get lost, trying to spell it.

Hoyer and a rookie. And this coaching staff will know the exact qb

to draft. Whoever that is, has my full support. Because this coaching staff

knows what the hell they are doing. They know who fits and who doesn't.

Previously, drafting goobers who don't love the game, but have physical skills didn't

pay off. That was stupid.

calfoxwc

Reply to Interesting QB Draft Information on Fri, 06 Dec 2013 17:22:31 GMT

The quick release does make the OL look a lot better and we take less sacks. Plus, it was with Hoyer under centre that we got the best production out of Cameron. That being said, the quick release doesn't allow for plays to develop - that may be why Gordon *only* got about 220 yards total in those two games...

gftChris

Reply to Interesting QB Draft Information on Fri, 06 Dec 2013 17:05:44 GMT

@<bdi>gftchris</bdi> said:

The problem I have with anointing Hoyer is the small sample set.
Agreed, except Hoyer has shown great accuracy and a quick release in all his game. He's definitely better than Campbell at those. Hoyer and a rookie for me.

USFBrown

Reply to Interesting QB Draft Information on Fri, 06 Dec 2013 15:17:42 GMT

The problem I have with anointing Hoyer is the small sample set. I am not sure where he would have rated had he come out this year.

Also, of course Jamis Winston of FSU is in the clear as far as any charges being brought.

Ergo, it seems that next year could end up being a far better year to be looking for a QB than this year.

Winston would be the #1 pick right now if he were eligible. Some had Mariota as the #1 choice this year over Bridgewater. Then Petty will also be out there.

Of course, sometimes what people think will be a good year for QBs could be a crap year for QBs

Remember when it was touted that the 1999 QB class with Couch/McNabb/Smith/McNown and others could rival the 1983 class?

I guess not.

(If you feel the need to merge this, I won't feel bad)

The Gipper

Reply to Interesting QB Draft Information on Fri, 06 Dec 2013 15:05:09 GMT

Browns already have 2 1st rounders on the OL.
