COMMENTARY | The Washington Redskins should be paying very close attention to the Cleveland Browns as they search for a new offensive coordinator.

According to recent media reports, the Browns are talking with former Redskins' offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan about a potential job opportunity. If Shanahan ends up in Cleveland, it would make perfect sense for both franchises to get together and strike a deal involving quarterback Kirk Cousins.

Here's why Cousins joining forces with Shanahan in Cleveland would be an ideal fit for both the Redskins and the Browns.

Why the Redskins should be eager to reunite Cousins and Shanahan in Cleveland

The Browns are the ideal trade partner as the Redskins attempt to get the best possible draft pick compensation in exchange for their talented young backup quarterback.

Courtesy of the infamous Trent Richardson trade with the Indianapolis Colts, the Browns are armed with an additional first round selection in the 2014 NFL Draft. Although the Redskins chances of getting a first-rounder in exchange for Cousins are slim, perhaps the Browns could be willing to part ways with their lower first-round pick if they hire Kyle Shanahan as the team's next offensive coordinator.

Cousins' value to the Browns would be higher than any other team, due to the potential presence of the coordinator who's provided tutelage to the young quarterback from the beginning of his NFL career. So if there's one team that could deal a first for Cousins, it could be the Browns if they hire Shanahan.

Even if the Browns aren't willing to sacrifice a first in return for one of the game's hottest young quarterback prospects, they still own some other draft picks that could be appealing to the Redskins.

Cleveland's second-rounder is only one spot below the one that belong to the Redskins, so that pick could be enticing to Washington. The Browns also possess an additional third round draft pick that waspreviously owned by the Pittsburgh Steelers. With that pick in hand, maybe the Browns would be willing to deal their own third-rounder for Cousins.

The Redskins would be sitting pretty if they're able to acquire any of the previously mentioned picks from the Browns for the rights to Cousins. Hopefully, Shanahan goes to Cleveland so the potentially appeasing trade on paper can morph into reality.

Why the Browns would benefit from a Shanahan, Cousins package deal

By employing Mike Shanahan's son, the Browns would attain the services of a young coordinator who despite so-so results in Washington, still possesses the potential to become one of the league's better offensive strategists.

By trading for Cousins, the Browns would provide Shanahan with a player he's helped shape and mold into a quality signal caller. With talented playmakers Josh Gordon and Jordan Cameron already on board, reeling in Cousins would give the Browns the makings of a potentially explosive offense.

Of course, if the Browns want to acquire a talented young quarterback, they could just simply select one with one of the draft picks they already have. Owners of the fourth overall selection in this year's NFL Draft, the Browns could easily end up with the likes of Johnny Manziel, Teddy Twatwater or Blake Bortles.

However, if Shanahan gets hired, the Browns could utilize the fourth overall pick to concentrate on a position other than quarterback in their attempt to improve their team. Meanwhile, they could use one of the other selections previously mentioned to land themselves a signal caller who already has a rapport with their new offensive coordinator, if they hire him.

Hopefully, Shanahan will land with the Browns, which would pave the way for an eventual trade involving Cousins and the Redskins in a move that would make sense for both organizations.

sure. let's stop fucking around and risking another top 4 pick with someone who is just over-inflated with hype and do something smart for a change.

how about the idea of having hoyer as your starting QB next year? do you want me to pull up all your posts on how you had a boner for him last year we he won 2 flipping games?

there is NO guarantee that any of these little fucking bugs will ever make it in the NFL. NONE. if so, show me the proof? you can't because they haven't even taken a snap in the big boy league.

this psychobabble freakish speed induced frenzy that we have to pick a FRANCHISE qb @4 is just ridiculous.

ok johnnyfootball fans.........if we do get him (and there better be any trades ivolved) do you think we automatically are a playoff contender? NO!
5 years is a lifetime in this league and if things don't work out as planned be ready for an owner that wants to sell the team, everyone top to bottom fired and the franchise paying for a hover-round with oxygen tank and iv support systems for our #1 pick.

stay pat, use our picks on everything else a QB (unless the diamond in the rough is there @26) and look at next year's QB class, which IMO will easily outweigh these over-hyped little sparrows.

Missing on first round QBs doesnt hamstring franchises like it did 5 years ago. The rookie wage scale changed everything. No, I dont believe its guaranteed that if we get one of these guys we are a lock for the playoffs no matter what. No matter who we pick, be it Clowney, Watkins, Robinson, Matthews, Barr, they all have inherent risks. But I can guarantee that if we do hit on a QB, we're perennial contenders for the next 5-6 years at least. I cant say that with any other position. Honestly, Id be excited as fuck if we draft anything other than a QB at 4. That means the front office has a lot more faith in Hoyer than I do, and they believe hes the real deal. I certainly hope thats the case.

Flyin J

Reply to Could Kirk Cousins Follow Kyle Shanahan to the Browns? on Sun, 02 Feb 2014 00:56:04 GMT

XxDaBuckeyexX said:

Gotta keep swinging.

Shanahan reportedly likes Grossman and Grossman reportedly knows Shanahan's system and will serve as a playing coach. You may have mistaken me, for someone who is pimping Grossman or Kirk Cousins. I'm not. All I was saying is that neither I nor any of the analysts I have read see a blue ship quarterback in this draft. Could be that Lombardi and Banner are a lot smarter than they seem to have been given credit for here and will pull a rabbit out of their collective hats.

But if the rumors are true that Kyle Shanahan was at odds with rg3 then it would stand to reason that there will be problems between him and Johnny Manziel. Maybe Johnny isn't the guy at the front office really wants and it's just a smoke screen.

Some reports say the Shanahan interview didn't go well and it wouldn't surprise me to hear that the Browns' love for Manziel has something to do with it.

I've also read Shanahan is a guy who forces players into his system and is not willing to adapt to the players. Basically the opposite philosophy of what Pettine stated.

Osiris

Reply to Could Kirk Cousins Follow Kyle Shanahan to the Browns? on Fri, 31 Jan 2014 13:04:22 GMT

XxDaBuckeyexX said:

You need to open your eyes. 4 QBs will go first round, all with "franchise" QB potential.
I'm going to say I doubt he follows Shanahan here because it looks like Shanahan's interview went very poorly.

Well he probably doesn't need the money right yet and there will certainly be more coordinator jobs open up next season. And if he had a conflict with rg3 and his pop about what kind of offense he wanted to run I can't imagine him coming in and sayings sure Mr banner whatever you say. We shall see.

fair point, overall however I just don't see Cousins being worth anything more than a 4th round pick.

jcam222

Reply to Could Kirk Cousins Follow Kyle Shanahan to the Browns? on Fri, 31 Jan 2014 00:08:40 GMT

@<bdi>jcam222</bdi> said:

better question is what is YOUR fucking point. You think that one game actually is indicative of how Cousins can play as opposed to the larger data set of 5 games in 2013?? I think not. That game was in 2012 as well where our defense stunk even worse.
