In the above video you can watch him deliver nearly every type of pass you can think of. His passes have good velocity and the placement is nearly perfect. On top of that you can see him make great throws from different positions. On one play he chucks it out while being tackled and the ball ends up in the perfect spot, in the Endzone where only the wide receiver can catch it. Another one, he double pumps it and heaves it 60 yards down field with the flick of a wrist.

He has the pocket presence of a franchise QB. He's not just a QB, he's a commander on the field. He demands attention and respect from the other 10 guys and they give it to him because he deserves it. They see him put in the work and know that he's a guy that is worthy to follow.

He can run well for a QB. He's even somewhat elusive. He's a larger guy at 6'3 but He's able to escape the rush and make plays with his feet as well. He's a competitor and a student of the game, always trying to get better.

His detractors will say he threw for 5083 yard, 50 TDs to just 8 Ints. by way of screen passes and a favorable offense. Well, yes, he can throw the screen pass extremely well, that's probably why they do it. That, and the fact that defenses have to respect his very accurate deep ball- so naturally they play off quite a bit allowing the screen room to work effectively. But, in the video above you will see plenty of down the field throws.

His maturity also is something that puts him above the front runners at the QB spot. As you'll see in the video below, he's humble and says that he's had amazing wide receivers to work with. Where Mr. Football is all about ME, Carr is all about WE.

The very best thing Cleveland could do is draft Derek Carr and don't look back. Chance are, should it all play out well, and Carr's stock not skyrocket to much during the up coming combine, he'll be there for the taking at #4 overall. Cleveland should select Carr and leave nothing to chance. The Vikings would love for him to be there when they get on the clock... we shouldn't give them the chance.

Take Derek Carr and add another franchise piece with the 26th pick and Cleveland will turn their fortunes around very swiftly.

TCPO, Dawg, I'm not pushing back the date yo. All along, from the get-go I've stated that it was unfair to judge him last year. New system and moving and new terminology and protections, ect. - I said you would have to wait until he had a full off-season under his belt. He has had 1 legit season, you've had Management sell the team, new owners, new coaches, new F.O., new plays and playbooks, ect. THEN you're traded on top of that 4 weeks into the season.

I don't have to debate you whether or not he sucked. The film speaks for itself when he had his one season in Cleveland. He was exciting and made plays. I believe he even broke one of Jim Browns records as a rookie. Brown himself came out and said he was wrong for calling Trent 'ordinary' because he thinks Richardson is special... But, you can keep riding those coat-tails if you must to validate your point in vain

What coattails? My own? For saying that you were wrong from the very beginning?

A "special" player doesn't get traded one year into his career. Don't give me Brett Favre, either. Hardly the same scenario. A "special" player doesn't lose his starting position halfway through the season. A "special" player doesn't average the same YPC as the washed up, 32 year old vet with blown knees that replaced him.

He's about as "special" as any other Alabama RB in the league right now. Not special at all.

Tim Couch Pulls Out

Reply to Derek Carr on Fri, 25 Apr 2014 22:54:36 GMT

^ I almost forgot to harken back to the video.

Posted 15 February 2014 - 07:33 PM

We've all heard about Johnny Football, Bridgewater and Bortles.
yep. i think the guy might be the #2 (if not #1) rated QB if not for his lack of pocket presence. he can make every friggin throw. but so can mettenberg. personally i think mettenberg has the better arm but talk about a statue pocket passer. the guy wouldn't move if you stuck a pitchfork in his ass. i saw film of him just stand there and deliver the pass down field knowing he was going to get cracked. sure he had the guts to take the hit but doing that in the pros you'll be gone by week three. the days of having an OLine holding back an onslaught of defenders for 4-6 secs is gone.

that's what sucks about this class of QBs. there's not one that doesn't have some type of deficiency that either can be corrected at the next level by coaching or never will. there is no complete guy.

if carr could learn how to slide in the pocket (not necessarily scramble around and run) at the next level then he'd definitely be worth a look as a franchise QB.

miktoxic

Reply to Derek Carr on Wed, 16 Apr 2014 06:45:49 GMT

@<bdi>poeticg</bdi> said:

Derek Carr 2014 NFL Draft scouting report

By Matthew Fairburn  @MatthewFairburn on Apr 14 2014, 7:30p 2

There are times when Carr's accuracy fails him, but we'll touch on that later.

Decision-making

Mechanics

And here's where we start getting into some of the negatives to Carr's game. His mechanics, particularly in his lower body, are inconsistent at best. He often throws off of his back foot and doesn't transfer his weight properly when throwing the ball. He also lets his throwing mechanics be affected by pressure in the pocket, whether it's rushing his throw and not paying attention to his arm slot or not taking the time to focus on proper lower body mechanics. Carr's biggest problems tend to come with pass rushers in his face, and that leads us to the other issue with Carr ...

Pocket awareness

It's tough to deny that Carr struggles when faced with pressure in the pocket. Granted, the problem was much worse in 2012 when Carr was a junior. As a junior, Carr was dealing with a hernia injury but played through it. He was tentative with pressure in the pocket and rushed his throws as a result. At times he even appeared rattled with bodies around him, and justifiably so.

Carr made strides in this area as a senior but still has a ways to go. Learning to anticipate pressure would go a long way toward solving Carr's problem. He doesn't have a natural feel for the rush and struggles to maneuver throughout the pocket when things get hectic. That's not always the easiest thing to learn at the next level, but Carr has the athleticism and natural feel for the game to pull it off. His internal clock may have been a bit screwed up at Fresno State because he was either throwing deep passes or screens. That isn't how he will be operating in the NFL.

Most importantly, Carr needs to learn to make sure his mechanics are not completely ruined by pressure in the pocket. His footwork, and consequently his accuracy, were too often adversely affected by teams bringing the blitz. Look no further than the USC game at the end of his senior season to see the effects pressure had on his game.

All of that being said, Carr is a tough player in the pocket. He's willing to take a hit and has enough athleticism to extend plays and keep his eyes downfield. He just needs to develop a more natural feel for pressure.

Carr grades out as a first-round pick. The improvement he showed in the pocket as a senior was encouraging. If he continues to improve in that area, he could be a franchise quarterback in the NFL. Rolling the dice on Carr in the late part of the first round would be the proper value for him. There isn't quite as much separating Carr and Blake Bortles as some people may think. Additionally, Carr is a huge plus in the character department. He is the type of person you want leading your franchise on and off the field.

Matt, the bold exactly describes Brandon Weeden, and you're wondering why I'm saying cool your jets about this guy? He may well be a first round prospect- a low one probably. Should the Browns draft him, he needs to sit for a year or two. What I'm more concerned about is pocket awareness- either you have it or you don't- and it looks like Carr doesn't.

hoorta
