Here is the comparison of Cleveland and Pittsburgh from a wide variety of sources, some objective, some subjective:

1. Lets first note a few things about population: The Greater Cleveland area (Core statistical area) has a current population of about 3.5 million people. The Greater Pittsburgh area has a population of about 2.6 million people.

Currently, Cleveland has a population of 395,000. Pittsburgh has a population of about 306,000.

At their peaks, both in the 1950s Cleveland had high of 914,000 population. Pittsburgh's peak was 676,000. Both are now less than half that peak now. While each Metro area population hasn't gone down much, there has been a lot of flight to suburbs for both cities.

So here we go on comparisons of various areas. I am sure other things could be thrown in:

A. Unemployment rate: Pittsburgh's is slightlyy lower than Cleveland's.

B. Crime Rate: Cleveland's is slightly higher

C. Cost of Living: Cleveland's is lower

D. Diverse Terrain: With all of its hills Pittsburgh's terrain is more diverse

E. Distinct neighborhoods: because of that terrain, Pittsburgh's neighborhoods are more distinct.

F. Congestion: that terrain also contributes to a more congested traffic pattern for Pittsburgh

G. Urban Decay: because Cleveland at its peak had a quarter million more residents, it has suffered more urban decay with the loss of that citizenry.

H. Population loss: While Cleveland lost a lot of population in the 60s/70s/80s, Pittsburgh has actually had a higher rate of population loss since the 1990 census.

I. Weather: While Cleveland gets more snow than Pittsburgh, it also gets more sun. Cleveland has a higher percentage of sunny days than Pittsburgh, but also gets on average a few more inches of snow.

J. Geography: Purely subjective whether one likes the hills and rivers of Pittsburgh or the flatter land and the Great Lake of Erie that Cleveland has.

K. Diverse Ethnicity: Cleveland. Cleveland has a higher percentage of various minorities. Pittsburgh has been more homogenous (i.e. whiter).

L. Walkability: Pittsburgh with its tighter neighborhoods and terrain is considered more walkable (if you don't mind hills). Cleveland has been more spread out on flatter land.

M. Downtown Shopping. Pittsburgh has retained more of its larger downtown commercial retail stores than Cleveland.

N. Downtown nightlife. From what I gather it is about even. Neither city is bustling with downtown nightlife. Cleveland's adjacent Warehouse district may give it a slight edge if any.

O. Transportation: by all reports Cleveland has by far the better transit system with the Rapid etc.

P. Parks: Cleveland with its Emerald Necklace and Cuyahoga Valley NP takes this category....but Pittsburgh downtown parks may be better than Cleveland's downtown parks.

Q. Healthcare: With the Cleveland Clinic being one of the top 2 or 3 medical institutions in the nation this category goes to Cleveland....(though I understand that there is a very fine facility in Pittsburgh)

R. One source I read said that Cleveland is far less homophobic than Pittsburgh...for what that's worth.

S. Inner ring suburbs. Cleveland's inner ring suburbs (Lakewood/Cleve Hts/Shaker Hts./ Euclid/Parma) are more "well established" for whatever that means.

T. Arts/Culture:

..1. Cleveland Art Museum on of Top 5 in nation

..2. Pittsburgh Ballet a premier, probably Top 10 company.

..3. Cleveland Playhouse Square Theater District one of the tops outside of NY/LA/Chic, plus they have the Cleveland Playhouse which has produced many fine and famous actors give Cleveland the edge here....but Pittsburgh's Cultural District is improving.

..4. Cleveland Symphony Orchestra top 1 or 2 in nation

5. The cities are about equal in terms of things like Science Centers/Natural History Museums/Children's museums/Boat Tours/Zoos/Aquariuams/Trolley Tours/Brewerys/Casinos/History Museums/Auto Museums/Markets....Pitt. has something comparable tot he Westside market/Gallerys/Festivals

..6. Rock N Roll Hall of Fame is unique for Cleveland

..7. Cleveland has more "water born Museums" like the USS Cod and the Mather Steamship.

..8. Pittsburgh has Andy Warhol Museum

..9. Pittsburgh has the Incline which is a fairly unique attraction.

.10. Cleveland has The Christmas Story House and the Superman House.

11. Cleveland has Cedar Point nearby, Pittsburgh has Kennywood.

So, a lot of differences.....but a lot of similarities. One place is a little better here, the other a little better there.

Reply to Cleveland/Pittsburgh on Wed, 26 Feb 2014 22:38:36 GMT

The last time I went to the Rock Hall,it cost around 11 bucks I think. and that was pretty expensive then.(2000).
I haven't been in there in a few years so I guess I didn't know how much it cost. A lot huh? I guess it is like everything else then.

A key thing in the quote I used above is the Neilsen "Designated Market". This is essentially what the NFL uses to identify a teams natural marketplace....or a team's area of natural influence. Basically it is the 75 mile radius that the NFL uses for determining blackout areas.

A place like Youngstown falls within the Designated Market area of both Cleveland and Pittsburgh. Canton is fully within Cleveland's DMA. Toledo falls in the Detroit DMA, but not Cleveland's. Sandusky is in both.

Columbus is outside both the Cleveland and Cincy DMAs.

Some teams can have larger areas of influence than others due to location. e.g. the Denver Broncos draw from all of Colorado, western Kansas and Nebraska, Wyoming, Montana, parts of New Mexico and Utah.

Compare to Baltimore that is squeezed between Washington and Philadelphia. Almost none of its "natural area of influence" is not overlapped by one of those other teams.

The Gipper

Reply to Cleveland/Pittsburgh on Wed, 26 Feb 2014 17:47:03 GMT

@<bdi>the-gipper</bdi> said:

The census department doesn't link Austin and San Antonio into one single core based statistical area, but the probably should the way they are spreading out along that I-35 corridor.

San Antonion has about 2.2 million in its metro area. Austin has about 1.8 million. Combined that is about 4.0 million people.

Yeah that's true. I hear its been getting worse by the day. Tons and tons of people moving to the city.

45 minutes to an hour, I know it's in Canton but if you visited Cleveland it's an easy day trip to make.

I may have an unpopular opinion around here, but I have no problem with the city of Pittsburgh. Main reason I wouldn't live there is the landscape, lack of my career interests, etc. And it still doesn't feel right being from Cleveland.

I almost took an internship there (PPG) and I have a very good friend out there.

Steeler fans I've met out there were actually pretty polite.

My biggest problem is the inbred goons that live all over the place and in Ohio. Lots of ignorant jerkoffs who talk but have no idea what they're talking about. I can't even understand them sometimes.

Bengal fans are almost just as bad as the Ohio born Pittsburgh fans I encounter though.

I have a "friend"/acquaintence who lives and was born here in Toledo that I invited out to watch a game. Dude didn't show up until after the game just to annoy the crap out of everyone. I told him he was a big fat pussy and to drink beer somewhere else.

My personal hot spot is Austin, Texas.

Low cost of living, tons to do, booming, loads of well paying tech jobs (I'm a software engineer)

But that's just me, Pitt fans that come to this board seem to be of the bad type. Luckily I didn't encounter any of those while I was visiting Pittsburgh.

Luckily I didn't encounter any of those while I was visiting Pittsburgh.

bbedward

Reply to Cleveland/Pittsburgh on Wed, 26 Feb 2014 03:06:44 GMT

@<bdi>bbedward</bdi> said:

Yes. A lot of the suburbs make a super easy trip downtown though, which is nice.

Downtown is a nice place to be, so are some of the surrounding areas like Lakewood if you're looking for a fun time (Lakewood is a decent place to live if you're 18-30 IMO. Some of the near neighborhoods have gone downhill though. Just a lot of not caring for the older properties. I grew up in Old Brooklyn, albeit I'm not that old, but that's a neighborhood that isn't all that terrible - but most of the properties are worth dirt now and that caused a lot of trashier people to move into the area. I definitely wouldn't live there nowadays myself though.

Parma's been going downhill as well.

Regardless most people live in a surrounding burb and commute probably 20-40 minutes if they work within the city.

Cleveland advantages over Pittsburgh off the top of my head:

- Hospitals

- Museums (I mean, you have the rock & roll, art museum, football HOF nearby)

- Lake

- More fortune 500 companies

- Playhouse Square

- Better food (In my opinion)

- Better beer (This one's actually a fact)

I have nothing against Pittsburgh as a city. I've been there a few teams and have had a really good time every time. My biggest problems are getting around the city which I find to be a PITA compared to Cleveland and living on a cliff.

Only thing I have against Pittsburgh is people who act like these goons. But I guess you find that anywhere.
