I'm not saying this is what I want, in fact, I DON'T want this kind of draft necessarily, but I'm merely trying to connect these dots:

Both Mike Pettine and Ray Farmer are defensive guys.

Farmer is a former NFL linebacker.

They just released D'Qwell Jackson

Farmer said this draft has the opportunity for some curve balls.

It is reported Mariota was Farmer's favorite QB prospect before he took his name out of 2014 draft.

The Browns have a good potential bridge QB in Hoyer.

Farmer has repeatedly downplayed the importance of QB, denying that a championship team has to have a QB that can carry a team.

So given the above points, here is what I think the Browns will do in the first two rounds of the draft, which of course, may not.

Round 1, pick 4

Scenario 1: Trade down with the Minnesota Vikings, picking up their #1 pick in the 2015 draft. The Vikings would love to jump ahead of Oakland and select one of the top 3 QBs who is remaining at #4. This Browns would have added ammunition to to go after Mariota next year. With the #8 pick, they would then draft a guy that fits both Pettine and Farmer's background, Khalil Mack. He may be an OLB, but he is the complete package at linebacker, he can cover, he can edge rush, which makes him ideal for a hybrid multiple front system. There is the risk the Bucs would draft him before the Browns, so maybe they try to make a deal with the Falcons instead if Clowney is still on the board. If they trade down and this backfires on them, C.J. Mosley would be a pretty nice consolation prize to replace DQ.

Scenario 2: I still think if there is one of the top 3 QBs that interest Pettine and Farmer, it'd be Bridgewater, Bortles, Manziel, in that order. Bridgewater is an injury risk, but he is the guy least likely to lose the game for your team when on the field. Given Farmer and Pettine are defensive guys, they probably want a QB who is going to be known quantity when he's out there, least likely to do something stupid. He's also the QB who has been the least associated with the Browns by the media, which if you believe in lying season in the NFL and smoke and mirrors, makes him their favorite. Bortles is an outside chance but his self-stated need to develop gives them the ammunition they need to pick him and sit him behind Hoyer if they'd like to do that. I'd be very surprised if the Browns picked up Manziel.

Round 1, pick 26

If the Browns do trade down with the first pick, I hate to say it, but I think they might pick up Derick Carr here. I would not love this pick, I think he'll be Weeden 2.0, but he is a high-character individual and that might be enough to sell him to Farmer and Co.

Round 2, pick 4

If the Browns picked Mack and Carr, I'd look for them to pick a wide receiver with this pick.

Of course the rest of free agency is going to dictate what the Browns do in the draft, but what do you all think? Do you think we again spend more of our assets on defense because we have defensive guys leading the team, who are heading into their first ever drafts as GM and head coach? People, when faced with new situations, tend to fall back on what is comfortable and familiar to them. It's not what I want, but it's starting to look more likely at this point.

Reply to My Browns Draft Predicition on Fri, 28 Feb 2014 20:55:50 GMT

@<bdi>jcam222</bdi> said:

We need to add a stud TACKLE and move Mitchell Swartz to guard.
That could well be the case. Whatever we do I'd like to get a top notch guard. And as good as a running back as possible given the fact that there is no Adrian Peterson out there. But with a combination of guard and RB you can eat up a little more time on offense and give the defense more time to rest. Besides Ray Hortons failure I think the defense fell apart in the 4th quarter because the offense couldn't hold on to the ball. I don't know what the stats on that say but that's my guess.

Clowney should be versatilel and asked to participate in various differing defensive schemes.

First and foremost they need to keep there picks and use them on skill not a qb. There is no reason to take one. First the talent is not there, if it was an Andrew luck or Winston next year I would say yes. STOP TAKING QB's!!!!!!!!!!! First pick Sammy Watkins he's the best wr of the bunch. Second pick Carlos Hyde the best back in the bunch as well, and a one cut guy like shannahan likes. Third pick needs to be a right guard sure up the line and then defense, mainly some studs in the middle or another shutdown cb. If we get those picks a bum could run the offense, but remember we have hoyer who many would say what? or your stupid, but he is Better right now then anyone you can bring in. Plus he is already worked with Gordon and Cameron. And let's face it or d last year was pretty damn good with or stagnate offense they held up very well. And we are so close to putting it all together I would hate to be set back another few years by bringing a average qb into town. And just putting this out the watch josh copper if they keep him and use him he's the next Wes walker.

I agree a decent offense will make our defense much better, and I'd be willing to give Hoyer a shot at running the offense. I still think we need to draft a QB in case Hoyer doesn't pan out or gets injured again. Drafting a QB is guaranteed, we just can't be sure where they will do it.

The thing about drafting Watkins is that this draft is very deep at wide receiver so you can get a really good one later. I also think Cooper has a shot of being a Welker type player, but the word is he is inconsistent in practice.

Osiris

Reply to My Browns Draft Predicition on Fri, 28 Feb 2014 00:10:40 GMT

Yes the team is said to be a defensive minded team now but if they have that mentality it will be a long season ahead. But I generally agree that we won't go QB with the first pick. I don't also think we'll go WR with it, either, given the depth. So either we're looking at Clowney, OT (unlikely, but possible) or trading down. Not sure Minn gives it's #1 next year to move up from 8 to 4, but it's possible with some lower round adjustments maybe, throwing in a 3/4 of ours.

gftChris
