There have actually been 4 NFL teams in NE Ohio that have gone by the name Indians. The original Cleveland Indians also were the Tigers for one year and played from 1920-1921. Then another Cleveland Indians team began play in 1923...but changed their name to The Bulldogs after the Canton Bulldogs went out. (absurd that a team would fold after winning 2 consecutive championships)

Then in 1931 a Cleveland Indians team played in the NFL for one year....but apparently lost its ownership group and folded.

Then there were the Oorang Indians who played out of Mansfield, Ohio...and were founded by Jim Thorpe. It was an all Native American team, and the "Oorang" was actually a corporate name that came from a dog Kennel.

Perhaps the most unusual team to ever play pro football.

The Gipper

Reply to Primer for Newbies.
OK, the last group of trivia I did for the newbies didn't do that well with them. Hopefully it is not a fact that al they know about is Johnny Football. Here is a chance for them ...and the rest of you, to show a little knowledge about the history of the teams in the AFC North. Carry on:

Final Answers:

1. Where did the Ravens defense rank in the league in their 2012 Super Bowl season?

They were 17th ranked. As noted eisewhere, that really was far from the best team in the NFL...but as we see so often in the NFL Tournament as in the NCAA tournament, it is not the best team that wins, just the one that gets hot at the right time.

2. There are 4 teams that the Ravens have played the most times in the postseason (3 times each).

Name these 4 teams.

Steelers/Patriots/Colts/Titans

3. From their inception in 1933 until they won their very first postseason game in 1972 the Steelers played, and lost, to only 1 single team in the postseason. What was that team?

Philadelphia Eagles to whom they lost 21-0 in a playoff game in 1947.

4. When the Steelers finally did break through to win that first postseason game, who did they defeat?

The Oakland Raiders in the Immaculate Reception Game. That is why that game came to be considered so memorable, not only for the final play, but also because it was the very first postseason victory in Steeler history

5.A. Who is the last team the Steelers have defeated in the postseason? The Jets in the 2010 AFC title game.

B. Who is the last team the Browns defeated in the postseason? The Patriots in 1994.

C. Who is the last team the Bengals defeated in the postseason? The Houston Oilers in like 1990 (have lost 5 in a row)

D. Who is the last team the Ravens defeated in the postseason? The 49ers in the 2012 Super Bowl

6. Who did present Bengals coach Marvin Lewis replace as HC of the Bengals?

Dick LeBeau, current DC of the Steelers.

7. Named the 4 entities that Paul Brown coached before becoming the HC of the Bengals?

There are actually 5, but one...his first High School gig is not ever thought of. Here they are:

Severn School, Maryland Won State Championship

Massillon Washington HS won numerous state and national championships

Ohio State University won 1942 national Championships

Great Lakes Naval Academy, coached during WWII. Not sure of results....

The Cleveland Browns.. won 7 Professional football Championships

8. Name all the Head coaches that ever took an AFC North team to a Super Bowl (win or lose).

Forrest Gregg and Sam Wyche, Bengals. Brian Billick and John Harbaugh, Ravens. Chuck Noll, Bill Cowher, Mike Tomlin, Steelers

(Note: Blanton Collier took Browns to 2 games if won would have put the Browns into the SB, Marty Schottenheimer also too the Browns to 2 AFC title games but lost, and Bud Carson took Browns to one AFC title game but lost)

9. Who is the leading passer in yards in Bengals history?

Ken Anderson 32838 yards. (Esiason 27,149)

10. Who is the leading passer in yards in Browns history?

Brian Sipe 23, 713.....but only by 129 yards more than Otto Graham at 23,584. Kosar=21,904

11. For purposes of this question "Pro football titles" refers to those titles won in the NFL, or in those leagues that merged with the NFL (those being the AAFC and the AFL, not included are like USFL or XFL etc. )

A. Name those teams from Western PA that have won a pro football title.

(they did have a team in USFL....can't recall the name...Invaders? Predators?)

B. Name those teams from Maryland that have won a Pro football title.

The Baltimore Colts and the Baltimore Ravens (Baltimore Stars also won a USFL title)

There was also a Baltimore Colts AAFC team that, other than name, is not the same franchise as the current Colts.

C. Name those teams from Southwest Ohio that have won a Pro football title.

No team from SW Ohio has ever won a title. SW Ohio has had these teams: Cincinnati Celts, Cincinnati Reds, Dayton Triangles, Cincinnati Bengals

D. Name those teams from Northeast Ohio that have won a Pro football title

The Akron Pros...1920 NFL champs, The Canton Bulldogs 1922/23 NFL Champs, The Cleveland Bulldogs 1924 Champs (technically considered a separate franchise, for some reason), The 1945 Cleveland Rams, The Cleveland Browns 8 titles in AAFC and NFL.

Note: other teams that have played in NEOhio include: Cleveland Indians, Oorang Indians, Dallas Texans.

Paul Brown, Len Ford, Frank Gatski, Otto Graham, Lou Groza, Dante Lavelli, Mik McCormack, Marion Motley, Bill Willis

Note: Only the Packers of the 1960 have more Hall of Famers inducted from those team than the 70s Steelers and 40s/50s Browns.

Interim Trivia....for those not name Tourma: Here are the questions he did not answer. You newbies or oldies have a second chance:

1. Where did the Ravens rank on defense (yards) in their 2012 Super Bowl winning season?

They were hurt all year and I think they gave up alot of yards in the regular season when guys like Lewis / Reed / Suggs were out with injuries. I'm going to guess 23

Good guess, not quite right.

2. Besides the Pats/Colts/Steelers what other team have the Ravens faced 3 times in postseason play?

I'm going to guess the Titans, I vividly remember Eddie George battling Ray Lewis in a hard fought playoff game so thats at least one. The Titans were good for a good stretch with McNair and made multiple playoffs.

Check on the Titans.

4. When the Steelers finally won a postseason game after 39-40 years in the league, who did they beat?

I'll guess the Raiders since they were good in the period and would have been in the postseason alot.

Check on the Raiders

5. A. Who was the last team the Steelers beat in a postseason game?

I'll guess San Diego

NO

B. Who was the last team the Bengals beat in a postseason game?

(already got Browns/Ravens)

I'm thinking this has to be late 80s, Denver was in the postseason alot in that time period I'll guess the Broncos.

NO

6. Who did Marvin Lewis replace as HC of the Bengals?

Mike? Shula... I feel like it was one of Don Shulas kids

NO

7. Besides the Bengals and Browns, what other entities did Paul Brown coach in his career?

Pretty sure he coached the Ohio State Buckeyes for a couple years. I could be wrong though.

OK, the last group of trivia I did for the newbies didn't do that well with them. Hopefully it is not a fact that al they know about is Johnny Football. Here is a chance for them ...and the rest of you, to show a little knowledge about the history of the teams in the AFC North. Carry on:

1. Where did the Ravens defense rank in the league in their 2012 Super Bowl season?

2. There are 4 teams that the Ravens have played the most times in the postseason (3 times each).

Name these 4 teams.

*

3. From their inception in 1933 until they won their very first postseason game in 1972 the Steelers played, and lost, to only 1 single team in the postseason. What was that team?

*

4. When the Steelers finally did break through to win that first postseason game, who did they defeat?

Oakland, 13-7 on the Immaculate Deflection Check

5.A. Who is the last team the Steelers have defeated in the postseason?

B. Who is the last team the Browns defeated in the postseason?

Interim Trivia....for those not name Tourma: Here are the questions he did not answer. You newbies or oldies have a second chance:

1. Where did the Ravens rank on defense (yards) in their 2012 Super Bowl winning season?

They were hurt all year and I think they gave up alot of yards in the regular season when guys like Lewis / Reed / Suggs were out with injuries. I'm going to guess 23

4. When the Steelers finally won a postseason game after 39-40 years in the league, who did they beat?

I'll guess the Raiders since they were good in the period and would have been in the postseason alot.

5. A. Who was the last team the Steelers beat in a postseason game?

I'll guess San Diego

B. Who was the last team the Bengals beat in a postseason game?

(already got Browns/Ravens)

I'm thinking this has to be late 80s, Denver was in the postseason alot in that time period I'll guess the Broncos.

6. Who did Marvin Lewis replace as HC of the Bengals?

Mike? Shula... I feel like it was one of Don Shulas kids

7. Besides the Bengals and Browns, what other entities did Paul Brown coach in his career?

Pretty sure he coached the Ohio State Buckeyes for a couple years. I could be wrong though.

11. B. Name any team from Southwest Ohio that won a Pro Football Championship?

D. Besides the Browns and the Canton Bulldogs, what other teams from Northeast Ohio have won a Pro Football Championship?

12. Who were the other HOF players on the Steeler Curtain dynasty besides Blount/Bradshaw/Green/Ham/Harris/Lambert/Noll/Swann? (2 names)

Mike Webster is the HOF C you are thinking of. Died pennyless under a bridge, very tragic. I forget if OP confirmed but WR John Stallworth was the other I remember watching his speech.

OK, the last group of trivia I did for the newbies didn't do that well with them. Hopefully it is not a fact that al they know about is Johnny Football. Here is a chance for them ...and the rest of you, to show a little knowledge about the history of the teams in the AFC North.

LOL... I don't think it was any disgrace to not know all the players we ever took with the xth pick in the draft.

Then again the new folk should have known all the Aggie QBs ever drafted.

Well, I was hoping that some of these newbies would make an effort here, we shall see. But, if they couldn't answer question about Aggie or Okie players....not sure what they could do here. Maybe a couple will surprise. On the other hand, maybe they won't. It might show that they are not actually NFL fans but college fans....or maybe just Aggie fans.....or maybe just Johnny fans.

1. Where did the Ravens defense rank in the league in their 2012 Super Bowl season?

3. From their inception in 1933 until they won their very first postseason game in 1972 the Steelers played, and lost, to only 1 single team in the postseason. What was that team?

Wild ass guess Philly... Perhaps that can become your new Screen name "Wild Ass" Check

4. When the Steelers finally did break through to win that first postseason game, who did they defeat?

70's post jump to AFC... CLE?

NO

5.A. Who is the last team the Steelers have defeated in the postseason?

Dunno... last loss was the Teboe miracle at Denver...
