TIL, New York is not the capital of New York.

Is there a good reason that this is the case for a load of places?
Is there a good reason that this is the case for a load of places? Like, St Louis isn't the capital of Missouri, Seattle isn't the state capital of Washington etc. My buddy explained that Philly was the capital of the coutnry (or something) at the time, so Harrisburg became state capital of Pennsylvania. But there seems to be a theme of avoiding the big city as the state capital.
