A look at the Browns' usage of Cameron on the field, however, suggests that he faces a steep climb to post big numbers entering his first crack at free agency.

Cameron, who is questionable for Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay with a concussion, thrived in last season’s pass-often offense with 80 catches for 917 yards and seven touchdowns. This season, not only has he battled an early-season shoulder injury and a concussion, he’s not always being used like his “Pass Catcher” twitter bio suggests. Cameron has 13 catches for 250 yards and a score in six games.

If we learned anything from Jimmy Graham's free agency tussle with the Saints, “pass catcher” is code for “I want to be paid like a receiver."

According to ESPN stats and info, Cameron has lined up 197 snaps as a traditional tight end this season, compared to 43 snaps in the slot, 18 out wide and 15 in the backfield.

His 61 total snaps at receiver (in the slot or on the edge) ranks 32nd among tight ends. Under first-year Browns coordinator Kyle Shanahan, however, Cleveland has run the ball 225 times compared to 125 passes. That 64.2 percent rushing clip trumps last year’s 47.8 percent.

Cameron, the top option while Josh Gordon is suspended, has less than 30 targets as we head toward the season's midpoint, meaning his numbers will be down save a late-season explosion.

Cameron has hired CAA to handle his free agency. CAA knows tight ends. It negotiated Graham’s and Jason Witten’s deals in the last three years. No doubt part of the conversation with the Browns will stress Cameron’s worth beyond his 2014 stat line, which is fairly obvious when watching the team. He’s crucial to what they do, especially in play-action.

Perhaps those conversations won’t matter if the Browns decide to use a franchise tag on Cameron, which could cost around $8 million in 2015.

I'm with Stockton on this one. Cameron had so many catches that even he wasn't able to get to. The guy can flat out JUMP off the screen and he's a basketball player, meaning he has some good hands. I think I recall Hoyer himself saying that he should have given Cameron a more catchable ball(wide open in the endzone).

I don't care what any of you think, Jordan Cameron is a tank and a fucking bad ass TE. Hoyer is a baller, sometimes it takes a while to get on the same page. I could be nerves or chemistry, but sooner or later they will sync, and it's going to be fucking beautiful... Probably about the time Gordon returns and we have found a fucking wonderful supporting cast of WRs! Clearly they are the surprise of the team. Hawkins is magic out there, always wide open. Austin has found the fountain of youth that Dansby spoke of. Gabriel is a rookie and is already playing better than Robo, who was a second rounder. Even TB has looked a lot smoother in his routes. Look out when Gorgon returns, it's going to be like when the Colts had Peyton and the bunch years ago. Always somebody open, always somebody making a play.

We sign Cam long term, nothing crazy but something deserved and incentive based. Keep him hungry for more. He's a star. Respect Jordan.

This team is fucking amazing. After years and years of, "oh my, not again". I don't have to try N pump myself up for this team. They do it for me. They are special. Remember also, what we have here, being as good as it's been, is only going to improve and get better and better through the years. This is a very YOUNG and Hungry bunch, that given the time to build and gel and grow together- will thrive and blossom into the kind of team we are all longing for. Sit back a smile and revel in that for a moment. This is only the beginning.

PoeticG

Reply to Cameron out Sunday on Sat, 01 Nov 2014 00:57:31 GMT

@<bdi>bbedward</bdi> said:

So you're a Hoyer fan then?

Yep, Way too many variables to make irresponsible statements like Stocktons.

You'd have to plot each pass to know. But you can assume that the non catches include a mix of bad passes, defended passes, blocked/tipped passes, throw aways, hard to reach balls(see below), etc etc etc

Plus Cameron is often used to "go get passes", meaning we often throw high and away hoping he'll go get it. And sometimes thats the ONLY place to throw if he's covered.
Just so you know, passes thrown away and passes knocked down at the line do not count as targets for the receiver.

So we're talking about only 42% of passes thrown past the line of scrimmage in the direction of Jordan Cameron have been completed...and Cameron only has 1 drop.

Given it's a contract year, I doubt any of us could be more disappointed than Cam is.

More than catching... acceleration, speed and agility have all been lackluster this year. Watching Graham last nite brought this into even sharper focus for me.

Tour2ma

Reply to Cameron out Sunday on Fri, 31 Oct 2014 17:29:24 GMT

The Bucs have not covered a TE yet this yr.
Can't block, can't catch (body catching and dropping many), doesn't go up for jump balls, etc.

Idk what happened to him but hopefully he shapes up when he comes back.

bbedward
