Where I stand on it:

I hate the fact that TWC and Comcast have a monopoly on internet service in the US, and until Google fiber comes along to save the day, I have to deal with TWC's bullshit. If I watch Netflix, my bandwidth gets throttled. If I use a torrent to share files, my bandwidth gets throttled. As it is now, we have big brother cable companies keeping an eye on our network traffic, and they can limit our use at will if they don't like what we're watching or if they don't like companies whose content we receive (ie. netflix). They also set arbitrary data cap limits, where they are essentially making money off these caps and we get no improvement in infrastructure in return.

This week, Obama's come out in support of FCC mandated Net Neutrality, with the stipulation that the prices will be set by the market and not the government. For those of you who are against net neutrality, I guess I'm curious as to why.

Reply to Net Neutrality on Fri, 12 Dec 2014 18:39:53 GMT

@<bdi>westside-steve</bdi> said:

honestly if Comcast would say something like hey we will give you couple dollars($2 probably be enough) off your bill monthly if you let us set this up, there would be very few complaints.

Its probably about the same, while your info is in more places today it is also more encrypted\protected than ever before, the problem is that there are people looking for chinks in the armor and usually its because of End User error(not using hard to guess passwords, leaving a device\pc unlocked and\or unmonitored, not changing default settings, downloading something they shouldn't be), before the internet there were still people doing the same thing, but obviously they would have used different methods/scams.

sadbrownsfan

Reply to Net Neutrality on Fri, 12 Dec 2014 18:23:04 GMT

@<bdi>sadbrownsfan</bdi> said:

Electricity to run the modem would not be that big(since you are already using it) but if you are someone who puts a strain on your bandwith(streaming videos\downloading\online gaming) having someone else on your connection could be quite noticeable(and could produce lag). For security usually you are responsible for what happens on your network, I am not certain how this is configured, but I am assuming it is worse security for the people trying to connect(article explaining why http://consumerist.com/2014/06/23/heres-why-you-should-think-twice-about-using-att-or-comcast-wifi-hotspots/).

The biggest thing I don't like is that its on by default and its the responsibility of the homeowner to go into the router and turn it off. Most people do not know how to configure a router, or will not take the time to figure it out and remove it. Comcast is using your house as a free WIFI hotspot connection, that they will then turn around and sell(by offering connect from anywhere).

sadbrownsfan

Reply to Net Neutrality on Thu, 11 Dec 2014 12:44:12 GMT

Oh ya, furious.

MLD Woody

Reply to Net Neutrality on Wed, 10 Dec 2014 22:40:44 GMT

@<bdi>mld-woody</bdi> said:
