Yeah, Kobe had regenokine treatments, which is nothing like what clowney had. I think Kobe had old arthritic knees. So dont know if it would help Clowney or not, but they aren't available here in the US....only place they do it is Germany(and there is no good evidence it even works)......but you're right about the blood part..... its a treatment that uses your own blood to create a serum that alters your blood chemistry and how your body reacts to injured and arthritic joints. Its supposed to diminish swelling and inflammation, while improving healing.

Probably not healing from his surgery and he has swelling, pain?....no cartilage....remember Sandy Alomar and how he'd get his knees lubed up?

This is a modern versio of that. Except they create cartilage instead of injecting lube. It usually only lasts a year or 2, then wears out and has to be redone.

 Microfracture

The most common procedure currently in use for cartilage repair is microfracture, which really means making a series of tiny holes (with a special awl) in order to stimulate the stem cells of the bone marrow. We all have stem cells in the bone marrow throughout life, but the prevalence of these cells is about 1 in 10,000, and decreases with age. The idea is to release these cells into the hole created by the loss of cartilage. If the cells form a clot, there is a good chance that some may start to grow into a new tissue that in some sense resembles cartilage, even if not perfectly; it is certainly better than no fill of the hole at all.

Microfracture requires the same rehabilitation protocol as ACI, but it has the advantage of being performed arthroscopically. It is therefore considerably less expensive, and on that score alone has been promoted by many as being a “first line” approach. By this it is meant that if microfracture fails, the option for ACI or other techniques is still open. Insurance companies sometimes react positively when confronted with the information that microfracture has already been tried to heal a cartilage lesion.

Microfracture works especially well for small cartilage holes, and is considerably more successful in young people. Nevertheless, the success rates are variously quoted as between 60-75% even in the best hands and with the most motivated patients. This large a failure rate is not typical for other orthopaedic procedures (ACI will succeed apprx. 90% of the time), so of course the patient should know just what the odds are before embarking on the microfracture protocol, which really means an investment of about one year. Patient compliance and willingness to take directions is totally essential for microfracture! It may be for this reason, amongst others, that the well motivated young athlete has a higher success rate than the typical patient.

Patients are instructed that the rehab must go according to protocol, and especially as regards return to impact sports, that decision cannot be made by the patient alone or on the basis of how the patient feels. In other words, stay with the recipe, no embellishments. This problem has been reported in the popular press when professional athletes sometimes are allowed to return too early—this may result in repeat surgery.

My approach is to match the best procedure to a particular patient. The size of the cartilage lesion, the location, the age of the patient, the work situation—which sometimes means: is the patient willing to undergo the rehab twice (if the microfracture fails); all of these factors contribute to the decision to proceed with microfracture, to perform ACI or—in some cases—to not perform cartilage repair. This latter decision is particularly difficult to make, but it does appear to be logical as patients age and the possibility of a total knee replacement appears less daunting.

Stay tuned for procedures in the works that increase the efficacy of microfracture without requiring the growth of cells.

Reference: “The Microfracture Technique for the Treatment of Articular Cartilage Lesions in the Knee” in The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery

Manzier

Reply to Jadaveon Clowney out 9 months. on Thu, 11 Dec 2014 01:15:24 GMT

Microfracture is a last resort type of thing. And very very risky to the structure of the bone. Greg Ogden is a great example. You are basically damaging(drilling & fracturing) the bone, to create new cartilage growth through healing. Problem is that it doesnt always work and then the bone is fucked....and it is usually used when the body doesn't heal properly on its own...so, the risk is greater, because healing is the key element needed....

So, people who dont heal well get this surgery, but need to heal well for it to work.....makes sense....not

Finally, it requires an extremely disciplined rehabilitation for full recovery.....a full 8 hours days of work to be part of the 68% percent "success" rate.....and Clowney aint the hardest worker or most driven guy, so thats a big question mark right there

The list of people who have had this surgery and returned to their previous form is very short. The list of people who have had it and then been a shadow of their previous selves is long.

For every 1 real success(100% recovery), there are 10 failures

Manzier

Reply to Jadaveon Clowney out 9 months. on Thu, 11 Dec 2014 00:48:10 GMT

@<bdi>miktoxic</bdi> said:

hope you're not talking about me cause I wanted Mack even if Clowney was available....and mostly because we already have a lot of money tied up at OLB'er. If we didn't have either Sheard or Kruger, yeah I would probably have been quite fine with taking CLowney if he was there, even with this injury. He's still going to be an unblockable freak when he's 100% healthy. I reject all comparisons to Courtney Brown....there's no comparison between the two's skillset. And if CLowney would have been in Cleveland he probably would be playing still cause First Energy is a professional stadium that takes it's field conditions seriously. NRG is a covered stadium and it still has some of the worst turf problems in the NFL. Apparently the field is contructed of pallets of turf, like 1500 of em or something like that. So there's seams between all those pallets. I don't know if Clowney stepped into a seam or whatever but look up NRG turf issues. Why a stadium that literally overlooks lake erie has better turf throughout the cold season than a stadium in freekin Texas is beyond me.

Like the human body cant take the extreme strength, speed, etc...the frame, ligaments, tendons, binding materials are just too weak....cant contain the explosiveness ....and then break up....

Mudfly

Reply to Jadaveon Clowney out 9 months. on Wed, 10 Dec 2014 18:58:23 GMT

@<bdi>mudfly</bdi> said:

Hell no!

They were dumb to draft him the first time.

Microfracture surgery?.......he's done.....I give him 2 or 3 injury riddled years and then he'll be out of the league....

Final career tally will be something like 4 seasons.....30 games played.....45 tackles.....and 3 sacks.....

I know Anthony Spencer of the Cowboys had it done, missed almost 2 seasons and he is now a shell of his former self. Could be career ending. Texans didnt do their due diligence? I didnt like the pick, i would have drafted Manziel #1. Texans are fuckin idiots.

Sure is, Courtney Brown, Greg Oden in the NBA. Not positive, but think Kellen Winslow Jr. Not good.

hoorta

Reply to Jadaveon Clowney out 9 months. on Wed, 10 Dec 2014 18:48:15 GMT

Don't forget his antics in College:
