Matchup #1 Advantage - TIE

The Browns offense vs the Bengals defense is such a close matchup. If the Browns averaged 1 more point per game, and had a better season-long QB Rating, they would clearly have the advantage in this game. Enter... Johnny Manziel. Will he be the difference? Will his play elevate this offense to turn yards into points? I hope so...

                                                       Matchup #2

Yards per Rush - (4.1) 15h vs. 21st (4.4)

Scoring - (21.6) 18th vs. 11th (20.8)

Matchup #2 Advantage - TIE

Yet another close matchup between groups. The Browns D has everything they need to shut down Dalton and Green, but how well can the #26 Rush D hold up against the #10 Rush O?? That is the true question. For me, this time of the year is all about running the football, so how well will the Browns be able to stop it is going to tell the story of this matchup...

                                                     Matchup #3

            The Formula... Bengals O (21.6) minus Browns O (21.2) = Bengals 0.4

                                     Bengals D (22.2) minus Browns D (20.8) = Browns 1.4

                                     Browns (1.4) minus Bengals (0.4) = Browns 1

Matchup #3 Scoring Advantage - Browns +1 point

These teams are so close in their scoring that it's hard to pick a winner, but the simple math equation tells the story. The Browns win by one point, based on averages. The Browns' D gives up 0.8 points less than Bengals score, and the Bengals' D gives up 1 point more than the Browns typically score. More evidence for what should be a good game...

                                                    Matchup #4

                                              Browns vs. Bengals

Turnover Margin - (+8) 7th vs 20th (-3)

Matchup #4 Turnover Advantage - Browns +11

Trully, the gamechanger. The Browns have been excellent at turning the ball over, and in earlier games were excellent at holding onto the football. Hopefully, Manziel & co. can hold onto the ball and keep improving on the NFL's #7 ranked TO margin...

Overall - Browns by 1 point

Browns and Bengals are very even in their matchups, and are both evenly good/bad on special teams. The Browns average 1 more turnover per game, and that should be the difference. One good bounce here, or one bad bounce there and I think we have either a close game to-the-wire, or a convincing Browns win.

That's just by the numbers...

Now I am going with the Browns over the Bengals because of the D. :-I Dalton is not Andrew Luck, therefore, he will not fool the D. I have not seen the D play a bad game yet, even in the losses. The losses were close until bad offensive turnovers late made the scores look lopsided. As usual, they will give into the run in order to lock down the air attack. I also expect a defensive touchdown by the Browns or at least a turnover in the Bengals zone that yeilds a TD. That said, i will give a scenario in which the Browns DO NOT win this game. The D will help Johnny, but he still needs to score a few touchdowns (obviously). Too many 3 & outs, stalled drives &/or field goals will not work (besides field goals are anything but guarenteed anymore.) Also, Johnny is a rookie so I guarantee he will turn the ball over at least once. I don't care how good he is, he's still a rookie & will cough up 1. If it's just once, there will be no harm done. If it's more than that, it will most likely swing the game in Cincy's favor. If the Bengals make it close because of multiple offensive mistakes, the Browns will not win. Bengals will get the field goal they need to put them over the top. If he turns the ball over once or less, & gets the offense at least 2 TD's, I believe that will be enough with another stellar performance from the D.

Lincoln Dukes

Reply to By the numbers: Bengals vs Browns (Matchups) on Fri, 12 Dec 2014 16:37:01 GMT

The important number has changed... we've gone from an opening 2-point "dog" to 1-point fav.

There was a difference. You analyzed about a baker's dozen different factors.....and you found that the Browns held the edge in those factors by a majority of one factor. Browns had edge in 7, Cinci in 6. But what I was wondering is if you used that edge in factors as a basis to say "Browns favored by one point".....or, as I probably should assume, the factor edge does not relate to a point edge.
Maybe each factor could account for a three point differential. Like when they say the home team gets 3 points on the betting line for being at home.
