Brian Hoyer reached up on his tippy-toes to grab the name plate from the top of his locker.

“Just in case,” Hoyer quipped.

That’s where the Cleveland Browns stand one day after the 2014 season. In March, Hoyer is set to hit a slim quarterback market in free agency where he will be one of the most coveted prizes. And both Connor Shawand Johnny Manziel are in the infant stages of the career – each with too small of sample sizes to determine what kind of NFL quarterbacks they will be.

Coach Mike Pettine confirmed the team will hold “lengthy discussions” about the quarterback position – and the entire state of the roster – in the coming weeks of January and February.

And everything is on the table.

"I want what's best for the Browns, and that's all going to be part of the evaluation,” Pettine said. “I think Brian did some really good things for us. I don't know where Brian is with Cleveland, and I'll be very interested to hear where we are from an organizational standpoint. Personally, I have a very good relationship with Brian. He was a big part of our success this year, but it's something that I just don't know if the circumstances can come together for him to be back here next year."

One thing nobody can take away from Hoyer is when the Browns were winning, he was under center.

Since his first start with the team in 2013, Hoyer amassed a 10-6 record and, through October, was one of the NFL’s highest-rated passers. But the Browns’ entire offense hit a snag in November, and Hoyer’s body of work includes 13 interceptions compared to just 12 touchdowns from this season.

Still, the fact that Hoyer has proven to not only manage the offense but also produce results was hard for some of his teammates to ignore.

“Brian is a great player and at times he’s shown he can win games,” linebacker Paul Kruger said. “It’s tough to see guys have success and [take a step back] and now he’s in a different situation. Personally, I think he worked really hard this season and did some great things for us.”

Said Hoyer: “It’s a great scenario here, but you have to be wanted back.”

Hoyer, much like the Browns, will have options to weigh. Several teams are in the market for a veteran signal-caller, including the Buffalo Bills, who saw Kyle Orton suddenly retire Monday. Hoyer will also consider how much his family enjoys living in Ohio, living out his childhood dream of quarterbacking the Browns but, most importantly, the opportunity to be the guy.

“Once you’ve played, you don’t want to sit on the bench,” Hoyer said.

Hoyer strongly dismissed any belief he couldn’t co-exist with Manziel.

“Someone said I won’t come back here if Johnny is here – that’s not true. There isn’t truth to that at all,” Hoyer said. “Going back to what I said in OTAs and training camp: Competition makes people better. That’s why I don’t use that as an excuse for why my play declined. It had nothing to do with that. I wasn’t thinking about if Johnny did this or that … My decision will be based on what I think is best for me and my family.”

Hoyer’s plans for the next month? Relax on the beach, talk to the people he needs to but, mostly, let his agent handle all of the business.

“It’s been a long year with ups and downs,” Hoyer said. “I’m done thinking about [my future] for a while.”

With all the Manziel drama it's easy to look back at Hoyer with big eyes like you do an ex-girlfriend. As I'm sure many of us have done, you go back to that person and realize why you broke it off in the first place. Manziel may be even worse, but Hoyer is a back-up level talent. Don't get wrong-I'm glad we brought him in and he showed the team how to actually win some games. But the team didn't just go to Manziel for no reason either.

The only way Hoyer signs here long-term is if he's told he's the starter which I don't blame him for at all. It's not gonna take 10+ million to get him cause no one is gonna pay him that. He's probably the best FA QB available though so people will be offering him some decent money.

jrb12711

Reply to Bryan Hoyer open to returning to Browns on Thu, 01 Jan 2015 17:03:57 GMT

We're not gonna transition tag Hoyer you silly duddys.

bbedward

Reply to Bryan Hoyer open to returning to Browns on Thu, 01 Jan 2015 15:54:21 GMT

@<bdi>cdl15</bdi> said:

If this isn't a situation to transition tag a guy then I don't know what is

Ok....here's a quick run down on how it would work...

#1) It would cost us about 13-15 mil per year, which is ridiculous for Hoyer....so Id say the trans tag is not an option

#2) There is no compensation for trans tag players....just franchise tag players...

#3) "IF" you trans tag someone and they sign elsewhere, then you lose the option to trans tag until that contract is up...(and if they sign with you, like Mack did, then you retain the right to tag again)

So...a trans tag on Hoyer would be a terrible mistake(if you ask me).....if we got him, he would be massively overpaid and if we didnt get him, then we'd lose the opportunity to trans tag better players in the future

Id call it a lose/lose situation....lets just make an offer and let him decide on his own....or not....

And, listening to Farmers Pressy, it's pretty clear he thinks the Browns and Hoyer have vastly differing opinions on his worth.....

Mudfly

Reply to Bryan Hoyer open to returning to Browns on Wed, 31 Dec 2014 21:16:34 GMT

XxDaBuckeyexX said:

You think Hoyer is worth giving 15 mill next year?
Ha. I think it would be a disappointing venture anyhow. I don't think he was really a JM fan? His arguement was that Hoyer was a waste of time and they should find out sooner rather than later what JM has. He'd say if they would've put JM in sooner like he wanted, and given him more games to judge his body of work, they'd know better this year if he was "the guy" or not. And I bet he'd say JM wasn't in long enough to fully judge and they'll have use up games next year to evaluate him, and possibily still not get any better and waste more time finding "the QB".

He was the complete opposite of what Tour posted above about "winning one game at a time with the best QB option you have available". That is what the Browns need to do for the short term, but they also need to keep an eye out for that "franchise QB" without reaching too far IMO. But StockBoy's way meant to keep throwing QBs in there until the next P. Manning, Brady or Rodgers was found.

I really like what I saw with Shaw and he did a great job Sunday but his size and arm strength are a concern although with Hoyer starting and Shaw as back up it would be OK.

I don't want to see the Browns give up what they would have to this year to try and get an elite QB in the draft.

Maybe try bringing in some veteran quarterbacks?

OldBrownsFan

Reply to Bryan Hoyer open to returning to Browns on Wed, 31 Dec 2014 12:45:58 GMT

@<bdi>babernakle</bdi> said:

Hoyer is not a pro bowler but he is pretty good and he could be, but let's remember what he did with Alex Mack in the line up with few and young weapons. Plan should be to keep him and build around him. What's our needs. Deep threat, pass rusher, offensive lineman another tight end. What we don't need running back defensive back linebacker , manziel gilbert. So if possible package them to together for a first rounder and then we have three. Trade up get wr copper Bama, de Beasley Clemson, te o'leary florida st, and a o lineman. Bottom line is we have to stop taking qbs in the draft and let it come to us. Hoyer is more than capable with weapons. On top of that our backfield will be much improved next year. Kansas City and Arizona have both done this and it works. But the most I'm portant thing is to get the distractions out of the locker room . And at this point keeping Gordon is up in the air. I think hoyer an do the job and lead the team next year.

Pro bowl player? No way. Adequate back up. We need a QB which we don't have at the moment. Farmer said it pretty clearly. Where we will get that QB is anyones guess.

DieHardBrownsFan

Reply to Bryan Hoyer open to returning to Browns on Wed, 31 Dec 2014 12:06:47 GMT

@<bdi>londonbrown</bdi> said:

Because Manziel was so bad I think people are kind of forgetting how horrible Hoyer was for 4-6 weeks in a row.

Check my other posts on the matter yesterday, I am certainly not. But, I don't think we're ready to throw Manziel in without any backup plan, and short of drafting a guy who's going to come in and start (which I doubt), who else is going to be better than Hoyer, who already has a year in the system and the respect of his team mates?

gftChris

Reply to Bryan Hoyer open to returning to Browns on Wed, 31 Dec 2014 11:55:09 GMT

Because Manziel was so bad I think people are kind of forgetting how horrible Hoyer was for 4-6 weeks in a row.

LondonBrown

Reply to Bryan Hoyer open to returning to Browns on Wed, 31 Dec 2014 11:25:52 GMT

@<bdi>gumby73</bdi> said:

All about the Benjamin's.
I don't get why we can't offer him a contract for 5+ years at backup pay, but with incentives for starting/TDs/Wins/Playoffs/SBs that would give him starting money; then give him an opt-out clause if he hasn't played more than 50% of the games after 2 years, or something like that.

gftChris

Reply to Bryan Hoyer open to returning to Browns on Wed, 31 Dec 2014 11:20:50 GMT

All about the Benjamin's.
You recall this was Stockboy's arguement. The key difference is he wanted to do it when Hoyer was still winning games, but also when we didn't know anything yet in what Manziel had. And he repeated the point over and over endlessly.

LOL, should me and Z invite him back to eat a mega dose of crap? Nah unfortunately, that ship has sailed. It would be immense fun to pile on though, just how wrong he was about JFF.

But the guy to do what? Make the playoffs? Win the Division? Win the SuperBowl?

All are very different from "the QB giving us the best chance to win a given game".

All are goals that take more than even the greatest QB in history can supply. They are not a basis for evaluation.

That is what StockBoy never understood.

Clearly Hoyer gave us the best chance in 2014.

Worrying about having the best chance to win Week 1 and go from there.

Hoyer is an FA now does he give us the best chance to win Week 1 vs. all other FA's?

Vs. all QBs in the draft?

Vs. all QBs for which we might trade?

Worry about getting Week 1 right.

Five and counting...EDIT: we're up to eight.

LOL, If Pettine, Farmer, Shanahan, and Haslam make it an even dozen, Johnny's going to be looking for employment elsewhere. May have to let our resident historian Gip look up what's the fastest a first round pick has ever been cut. Richardson has to be at least closest, if not the first- top 10 pick to ever get traded short of 2 years.

hoorta

Reply to Bryan Hoyer open to returning to Browns on Wed, 31 Dec 2014 05:49:45 GMT

@<bdi>thenew23</bdi> said:
