<p><span style="color:#8b4513"><strong>Romeo flipped a coin that year (literally) to decide who would start the season ... Anderson or Frye. That was the year we drafted Brady Quinn, but he held out and wasn't ready. Frye had started the year before and got the start in the opener against the Steelers. He shit the bed and looked lost, Anderson replaced him at halftime. </strong></span></p>

<p><span style="color:#8b4513"><strong>They traded Frye because they were going forward with Anderson and Quinn was the "obvious" future. The next week Anderson put up 51 points and 5 TD passes against a Bengal team that won the division the year before and the roof blew off in Browns QB controversy history.</strong></span></p>

<p>Charlie was the hometown story that I rooted for. There were moments when I thought he just might be the guy. More than his arm I think it was his decision making (or lack thereof) that sent him packing. He held the ball too long and took too many sacks. He took five in his last half for the Browns.</p>

<p>of course it had something to do with the accumulated work but still if you are good enough to be chosen as starter and 30 minutes later you aren't worth anything, that's a pretty big and sudden drop. That's all I'm saying. I felt the same way you did. He was the Brian Hoyer of his day.</p>

<p>I think you hit on it there.  In fact, a number of MAC QBs were doing well.  Marshal was in the MAC when both Pennington and Leftwich were there. Gradkowski from Toledo had some run.  Charlie Batch is   a MAC guy.</p>

Charlie was something of an experiment. Very successful quarterback at the University of Akron in the MAC. I've often wondered how a guy it was considered good enough to start became absolutely useless to the team halfway through one game. There must have been something else going on but I don't know. I always like charlie of course I'm an Akron University alumni.</p>

<p>No you are right. He opened the season as the starter, got yanked at the half and was traded prior to the next week. It was pretty bizarre. </p>

<p>Interestingly Charlie is from my little Ohio town.
