Connor Shaw:

Height: 6'1

Weight: 210

40 time: 4.66

Russell Wilson:

Height: 5'11

Weight: 206

40 time: 4.55

Connor Shaw has 2 inches on Wilson. Although Wilson runs a slightly faster 40, it doesn't have a noticable difference in the game. When we watched Shaw in his start, we saw he has escapibility in the pocket. When there was nothing there, he was able to find a lane in the pocket and make a solid 8 yard gain. And most importantly, GET DOWN before getting hit. He looked very much like Russell Wilson in the times he did that. He also did admirably at going through his progressions, and making throws AT Baltimore, a hostile environment, with very little reps... And what we can assume to be a very simplified playbook. His arm strength isn't as strong as Russell's, but it is adequate. I can recall that throw to Gabriel right before he took a huge shot..

What I think is undermined, but was noticed by the coaching staff is Shaw's toughness. He finished the game with a dislocated finger on his left hand, and was pissing blood after the game. Talk about a warrior.

From a mental standpoint:

While Manziel has slightly more talent and ability, the two are night and day when you compare the way they treat their jobs. Shaw was on the practice squad almost all year, even playing as a safety on the scout team. But he studied hard all year and when he got his opportunity, while he didn't wow anyone statistically, he played admirably and looked MUCH more prepared than Manziel. If I had to choose between the two, I would choose Shaw to lead my team any day of the week, because he treats his job like a Professional.

From a teammate standpoint:

Was it just me or did the team not seem to play as hard when Manziel had the reigns? During the biggest game of the season? Yet, last game of the season, playing for nothing but pride with your 3rd string quarterback, the team fought hard until the end. I believe the team has more respect for Shaw because of the way he goes about doing his job. I'm sure that rubs the o-line and other teammates the right way..

The team around the QB:

We are on the rise. Our defense is becoming upper echelon and a few pieces away from being top 5 overall. Before mack went down, we were top 5 in the running game. Ray farmer is modeling this team after Seattle, and I believe with 2 more years of adding, we will be a perennial playoff and Super Bowl contender. (If we keep this regime.) Connor Shaw will be in a great situation where he can rely on defense and the running game, and then play action passes to open recievers. Also, he's athletic enough to run the read option, and has enough pocket awareness and escapabililty to make a safe gain before getting out of bounds or sliding.

I believe that while he wont start off the bat, at some point in the season, after Manziel, or the veteran they bring in gets injured and/or his play is substandard,Connor Shaw will get his chance and won't lose the job for years to come.

Reply to Why I believe Connor Shaw will be our Russell Wilson on Mon, 09 Feb 2015 13:04:14 GMT

Hey don't worry, we still have Tyler Thigpen on the roster.

The mullet is clearly photoshopped. Still funny though.

I think that if any quarterback out of the 2014 class has a chance, it would be Shaw. But that means very little. You don't plan to find a Wilson. You don't try and draft a Brady. You get take a risk and get lucky.

Shaw and Wilson have similar NFL scouting reports, however Shaw is more injury-prone and, because of which, has a weaker arm. But both are mechanical QB's who work very hard to understand their position and have good football instincts, a generally calm demeanor and are vocal leaders.

I'd love to see Shaw get a legitimate shot this offseason. He's essentially everything Manziel is, except less of a backyard footballer and more of an actual student of the game. He's equally mobile, yet climbs the pocket more efficiently than Manziel. He's equally statured, just an inch taller. He's got the college production and was proven to be more efficient in his limited time than Manziel was in his.

People shitting on this idea are, generally, the same idiots clamoring for Mariota ( I say that with absolutely no research. That is purely a blanket assumption on my end). Shaw had solid-to-good production from a solid-to-good team in the best conference in college football. He never had any off-the-field issues. He was at some times a comeback kid and other times a full-on weapon from start to finish. You can ask any true Gamecocks fan, they were never out of the running with Shaw at the helm. There was always a chance with him behind center.

If Shaw were 6'4, he'd have been a first or (more likely) second round prospect. From a scouting perspective, he's your best shot at striking gold. None of his issues had anything to do with his mental makeup or his production.

Shaw:

Fine touch and accuracy. Very good mobility and movement in the pocket. Tough and gritty competitor. Produced a rare 24-1 TD-INT ratio as a senior and cut down on mental mistakes that characterized his play earlier in his career. Workaholic, gym rat. Extremely determined. Vocal presence. Smart and instinctive -- is the son of a coach and understands football concepts. Plays through pain. Has a 27-5 career starting record, has rallied his team to victory off the bench and carries a calm, confident, poised field presence. Mentally and physically tough. Three-year starter in the SEC.

WEAKNESSES Is undersized and injury-prone with multiple foot and shoulder injuries. Played in a non-traditional, gimmicky offense featuring many simple reads and has a tendency to birddog his primary target. Operated heavily out of the shotgun, and mechanics will require seasoning. Average arm strength -- does not generate velocity on the move and comes up short on the deep ball. Can be too jittery vs. pressure and quick to tuck and run. Was the only passer who could not bust past 50 miles per hour on the radar gun at the combine (very marginal ball speed).

Wilson:

STRENGTHS Wilson is an accurate passer. He is a very mechanical quarterback who is consistent in his drop step and thoroughly understands how to move within the pocket and evade when the pocket collapses. He is an athlete and can torque his body to make any sort of throw on the run, and is accurate in this setting. He is a born signal caller who shows command of the offense. He has the arm strength to make the deep throws and the touch to put it on a receiver in stride. He is effective when scrambling and is a classic play extender. WEAKNESSES
Wilson's height will be his biggest inhibitor at the next level and the largest reason for his late-round value. It remains to be seen if he can throw effectively from the pocket at the next level.

I'd love to see Shaw get a legitimate shot this offseason.
While this is true, there are very, very few teams that have trio of 6'2 CB's that are comfortable leaving them on an island in press inviting you to attempt to throw over the top.

The horizontal passing game is very critical in beating Seattle. However, there are teams, such as the Browns, that have corners whom can take away those quick throws and slants with their own lateral burst. This is when its necessary to have a QB able to put the ball over the top.

tiamat63

Reply to Why I believe Connor Shaw will be our Russell Wilson on Tue, 03 Feb 2015 20:07:36 GMT

No way WSS would give it up to you...

Tour2ma

Reply to Why I believe Connor Shaw will be our Russell Wilson on Tue, 03 Feb 2015 18:10:59 GMT

@<bdi>tour2ma</bdi> said:

Ditto... plus straight speed is not the comparison to make. Agility and acceleration are key.

Shaw: - 20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.33 3-Cone Drill: 7.07 10 Yrd Dash: 1.64

Wilson: 20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.09 3-Cone Drill: 6.97 10 Yrd Dash: 1.55

and just for grins...

Johnny: 20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.03 3-Cone Drill: 6.75 10 Yrd Dash: 1.63

Points made on Connor's dedication/ professionalism are indisputable... as, IMO, is the case for the team having been on the rise. Whether that rise can be sustained given the coaching changes and other "events" is TBD, but I like our odds.

I'll only add that the OP deserved better than the first response. Disagree if you like, but to disparage a one-off is not necessary.

Yeah like I said, If Manziel had his athleticism with Shaw's mental game, we'd have a winner.. Unfortunately that won't happen so...

Adoug319

Reply to Why I believe Connor Shaw will be our Russell Wilson on Tue, 03 Feb 2015 17:12:25 GMT

@<bdi>d-bone</bdi> said:

I like Connor, but after watching him play 4qtrs in the NFL, it was pretty obvious that he lacks the arm strength to play the position as a starter......
Didn't take great arm strength to beat Seattle. Most the passes I saw were dink and dunk.

USFBrown

Reply to Why I believe Connor Shaw will be our Russell Wilson on Tue, 03 Feb 2015 17:08:07 GMT

@<bdi>chicopee-john</bdi> said:

Coming from the guy who said he wouldn't watch the super bowl, then posts a thread about his thoughts on the super bowl.

Pete Carroll's tenure at Seattle:

First season: 7-9

Second season 7-9

Third season: 11-5 (Went to NFC Championship)

Fourth season: 13-3 (Super Bowl win)

Fifth season: 12-4 (super bowl loss)

If we give this regime time, I think we'll emulate similar success

Keep in mind Pete Carroll is on his 3rd NFL head coaching stint, so he's got quite a jump on Mike Pettine.

But as Brown's fans, we can always hope.

Canton Dawg

Reply to Why I believe Connor Shaw will be our Russell Wilson on Tue, 03 Feb 2015 15:36:31 GMT

Of course, and now we're getting into different territory, de Blasio himself is a feminist lesbian.
