If this is proven to be the case, how does this affect your religious outlook - does this fit in with your personal view of how the universe came to be, or would it conflict with it? And if your view is different from the 'standard party line' of your religion, what about the two viewpoints?

No hidden agenda here, not just looking for answers from christians - hopefully Os can chime in, we maybe have different types of christians along with any lurking others. I'm genuinely interested to find out.

The bible gives the answers for the reason for the universe, the reason for the earth and the reason for man. I would like to know what you believe in regards to how the universe came about? The bible reason for the universe was the earth, the reason for the earth was man and the reason for man was fellowship. I find that easier to believe than out of nothing came the universe.
There are lines in the New Testament that seem to promote a Geocentric view of the universe, right?

A global flood?

Reincarnation?

I would say the parts about Creation, but I know you can "interpret" that section in different ways. How long is a day to god anyway? Stuff like that...

Really, I guess that can be said about much of it. I would need to know what someone believes literally in the Bible, and what they consider just stories. I don't think you can prove God does or does not exist, so in that sense, no. But a virgin birth, walking on water? Come on...

I just feel like these "stories" go from literal to metaphorical over time in an attempt to save face in a world where people are getting smarter each day.

MLD Woody

Reply to For the religious - a question on Sun, 19 Apr 2015 01:08:44 GMT

@<bdi>oldbrownsfan</bdi> said:

It was from a Christian perspective so no surprise you have problems with it.
To say that for centuries all the great scientists, scientific discoveries and inventions were almost exclusively coming from western Christian countries is a fact. There is nothing silly about linking the rise of knowledge in Christian western countries to the invention of the printing press. For a minister who lived through this period of time, seeing all the scientists, scientific discoveries and inventions coming exclusively out of western Christian countries and then linking it to the printing of bibles was speculation but it is not an absurd speculation. The minister was coming from a Christian perspective Psalm 119:130 "the entrance of thy words gives light (understanding). I think there was a definite link in the invention of the printing press and increased knowledge in Christian western countries but I would agree it was more of a speculation by this minister to link it to getting bibles into the hands of the masses. We know that just because a scientist lived in a Christian country that did not mean they were Christians either.

Well no shit there was a rise in knowledge thanks to the printing press. And no shit that The Bible was probably the most printed book. But to look at the spread of the Bible as the CAUSE of the increased knowledge, is incredibly flawed. What exactly in the bible would promote the spread of knowledge?

This all goes back to your "great minds" comment. Completely ignoring non-Christian areas, to make it seem like they only came from "Christian countries" (regardless of how the actual scientist felt) is absurd.

I thought I had cleared that up. I was referring to an article I had read that said there was a huge amount of creativity and inventions when bibles got into the hands of ordinary people in Christian countries. If you look at the link I am posting you will see he is correct. There was a huge amount of creativity and inventors going on in western Christian nations that was not going on in countries like China, India or other non Christian countries. His observation was correct. You can argue the reason for it. You could argue the invention of the printing press itself was the reason for the boom of inventors and inventions and not just the printing of bibles. However, getting bibles into the hands of the masses was a great thing in itself.
