A lot of this is just my theory and a lot is based upon me going back and looking at his game really hard......here are my conclusions(first).....

1) He will be very VERY good. And, I think it starts this year.

2) He would be the 1st corner off the board this year too. A MUCH higher ceiling than Trae Waynes.

3) He already IS the best CB from last years draft. Finishing the season much stronger than Dennard or Fuller or Roby did.....

The overriding issue is simply "what IS his issue"????......I can tell you it's not drugs....nor effort....nor talent....nor thugness.....nor any of that......he clearly is a clean, dedicated and supreme athlete.....

I think his issue is EGO.....and confidence in himself(over his coaches)(same issue he had to overcome in college)......

Simply put, he's so talented he doesn't want to be coached.....and he tends to rely on his instincts and athletic ability as opposed to trusting the coaches system.....and THIS is a battle with Pettine that he is losing......and one that is costing him playing time.....(he will learn)(and then...he will play great).....

So.....I went back through all the games(again) watching just him play and did a ton of research on the other Cb's, rankings, #'s, etc........here are some of the things I saw......and some things that you may not know....

1) He made some huge mistakes in games 1 and 3 and paid the price....(and these 2 games pretty much set the trend that "he sucks".....while we were hearing how great Fuller was....remember?) But they were his only 2 really "bad" games......

2) So....after game #3 Gilbert already had earned a very low -5.6 score, while Fuller was sitting at an amazing +5.9.....WOW, A HUGE DIFFERENCE......thats when every one started screaming he sucks, we picked the wrong guy, I wanted Fuller all along, yada yada, etc etc etc.......

3) But......games 4 thru 16?..... you find Gilbert scoring +3.1 and Fuller scoring a -24.4......um, hello?....talk about sucking bad.....wow!

4) And Dennard??......He was so bad he only played 60 snaps.....so there's that.....

5) And when you actually watch him play....Gilbert, that is.....you see that he is fluid, smooth, fast and has had some really great moments "for the Browns"......he's even out pointed Haden several games this year....and, I think, he is way too talented to keep on the bench.....several games this year he played GREAT and no one even noticed, which is what happens when no balls go to his side....out of sight/out of mind.......

So.....my money is on him realizing how it has to go with Pettine....and giving it everything he's got(cause he has a winners ego)....and stepping up to create the #1 nightmare CB duo in the league....and in maybe 2 or 3 years, HE will be the Best CB on the Browns(and maybe in the league)...

THATS my crazy prediction.......but this guy aint a Leon McFadden and one only needs to see him play to know he is a premium talent and way too talented to just flame out........

Reply to Justin Gilbert thoughts..... on Sun, 14 Jun 2015 02:38:17 GMT

@<bdi>gumby73</bdi> said:

A 32 year old Fair Catch Specialist.
Gotta say...compared to most of the other players, he sure has had a number of glowing reports coming out of ota's....

This is the 3rd article about him on Browns.com in just the last 2 weeks(plus several mentions on the Dawg Pound Report and Browns Huddle)....so, he must be really making waves at camp......which is very good news!.....

yep....and Pettine is being understandably reserved.....which I like.....

not one players ass has been kissed since he stepped in....

I hear ya but I got an outrageous flashback to Butch Davis bringing in Big Money as he was telling all the veterans and young players they had to earn their jobs here. Meanwhile, Big Money could snooze control an entire practice keeping that jockstrap ballsweat-free in the reality of actions speaking louder than words. That FREE RIDE clogging the arteries of our salary cap was a lot like the nightime glacier the Titanic ran into. Like the gorgeous ship, the inevitable conclusion made us forget Butch took over a 5-27 football team and got it to 7-9 with 2 OT losses in 2001 before going 9-7 in 2002. That was an impressive coaching job before he took on the front office role that buried everything.

The personnel decisions he committed to with his Personnel Exec hat on became a gigantic conflict of interest with his Coaching hat that needed assistant coaches and players to buy into what he was saying. It was almost like Big $ got to practice supine on a chase lounge while teammates had to earn their jobs. That's about as close to Romper Room as it gets only this target population was adults. The only thing we were missing was a Jeff Foxworthy interpretation of it all.

Like you're saying, this is a refreshing leadership today we can trust and get excited about. We're coming off 7-9 where we lost 2 games with knotted scores as time expired as well as losing 2nd half leads to Indy, Balt, Buffalo, Carolina. Understanding how outrageous our 2014 injury volume was coming off 4-12 football, that was way better improvement than the national media's doom and gloom clouds. Today, we're getting very good players back healthy + vet free agents + 12 draftees & rookie FAs. The light at the end of the tunnel is no longer the head lamp of an oncoming train unless someone wants/needs it to be. When I made the mistake of reading Tony Grossi last year - he'd be describing last season like lyrics of the Edmund Fitzgerald minus the voice of Gordon Lightfoot of course. His Gitchy Goomy just showed us the author needed a lot more gitchy gitchy gew when he missed his anger management classes.

Flugel

Reply to Justin Gilbert thoughts..... on Sat, 06 Jun 2015 22:18:01 GMT

Glad to hear he is doing better.

BitchTits

Reply to Justin Gilbert thoughts..... on Fri, 05 Jun 2015 21:04:04 GMT

yep....and Pettine is being understandably reserved.....which I like.....

Yeah, but...

The ramifications of being as poor against the run as we were last year (league worst) far exceed the yardages. Time of possession immediately springs to mind. Sustained drives feature successful running leading to fatigued D leading to D injuries leading to even further reduced ability to stop the run.

That's why they added depth among the front 3 (or 4).

Right now we have 13 players on the roster along the defensive line.

Shelton

Taylor

Starks

D. Bryant

A. Bryant

Winn

Wynn

Slater

Hughes

Cooper

Kitchen

Meder

Tupou

Even with A. Bryant supposedly taking a prominent role at OLB, and four or so players getting released, that's still solid depth with solid talent. Shelton, Taylor, Starks, Winn and maybe Hughes could start for most of the league. D. Bryant would probably be a starter for at least half of the teams. Cooper and Slater are athletic freaks with high upside. Kitchen would probably start as a true NT for around 1/3 of the league.

We raised the ceiling by adding Shelton and Starks, and then raised the floor with Cooper and Slater. Even if we lost our starting three, we'd be in a better position than we were last year.

Tim Couch Pulls Out

Reply to Justin Gilbert thoughts..... on Thu, 04 Jun 2015 17:54:58 GMT

@<bdi>the-gipper</bdi> said:

The difference between an elite secondary and a bottom-feeding secondary is nearer 200 ypg.
Stopping the run is an obvious fix that is priority #1 and between the players added and the coaches seeing what the main issues were, and promising to correct them, I feel good about them being at least a middle of the road run defense.

That should lead to a fair amount of 3rd and 5s this year, and with our lack of QB pressure that I'm again expecting, the DBs are going to need to ball out, and we need all of them to ball out, not just #23.

and, I think, we'll even get off the field on 1st and 2nd down more frequently too.....#morepickoffs

That our DBs weren't the reason we didn't get off on third down last year...

gftChris
