There is a slight learning curve for spread QB's, but for the most part they have struggled just as much as "pro-style" QB's.

According to stats gathered by ESPN:

There have been 35 QB's selected in the first three rounds since 2008. 16 of those were spread QB's in college, 19 were not. The stats between the two groups are nearly identical.

Spread QB's have a completion percentage of 59.2, non spread QB's have a completion percentage of 60.1

Spread QB's have a TD/INT ratio of 1.5, non spread QB's have a TD/INT ratio of 1.4.

Spread QB's have an average QBR of 43.5, non spread QB's have an average QB ratio of 46.5.

Spread QB's have a career win percentage of .470, non spread QB's have an average win percentage of .505.

The articles likes to cite RG3, Kaepernick and Manziel as shining examples of spread QB's who have failed in the NFL. However, Joe Flacco and Aaron Rodgers operated almost exclusively out of the spread in college and have had success. Bridgewater and Carr were also spread QB's in college, and they had relatively successful rookie seasons.

Tim Couch Pulls Out

Reply to Are Colleges to Blame for the NFL Quarterback Shortage? on Wed, 29 Apr 2015 16:42:03 GMT

The NFL may just have to go back to the way things were in the 70s/80 and before. Back then, colleges were all running the option and the wishbone and other such offenses. The league knew that it was going to take 3-4-5 years to develop a QB. And they were patient in doing so. They didn't expect a rookie....or even a 2d year player to be the shit right off.

But, a guy like Dan Marino came along....and he was incredible from the get go, and ever since teams have felt that they had to have a QB come in right away and perform, instead of developing them.

So, look where this has gotten the Browns over the year.......throw Tim Couch to the wolves after one game....when honestly he shouldn't have hardly seen the field for a year or two.

Draft Brady Quinn, Brandon Weeden, Johnny Manziel.....and make a judgment that they cannot play after their rookie season.

They needed to not play until like year 3 of their career.

Maybe that will happen in the future. Teams will actually develop QBs instead of making instant judgment.

Now...sometimes a QB just doesn't have it. Mike Phipps was given a year or two....but still never got it together. But Brian Sipe was nurtured and developed over several years (hell, he spent two years on the taxi squad)....and learned how to play.

Maybe that is what will happen with JMZ. He can sit this year.....maybe he won't turn out to be the bust we think he looks like after only two games.

So.....have more veteran QBs play.....and have more rookie and 2d year QBs sit and learn.

The Gipper

Reply to Are Colleges to Blame for the NFL Quarterback Shortage? on Wed, 29 Apr 2015 16:32:54 GMT

You can't agree with the article but drool over Marcus Mariota.
Spread is hurting other positions too. For example Joeckel and Matthews have struggled in the league.

wargograw

Reply to Are Colleges to Blame for the NFL Quarterback Shortage? on Wed, 29 Apr 2015 16:31:07 GMT

I don't think there is a quarterback shortage, I think the position is just becoming more important than ever.
