Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal noted that Gilbert had a "nightmare of a practice," even with Buffalo holding Percy Harvin and Sammy Watkins out of 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 sessions.

Gilbert unofficially allowed an outrageous 11 receptions, per Ulrich, giving up four balls in one-on-one drills, one in 7-on-7s and six in 11-on-11s. "Gilbert didn't break up a single pass and surrendered a catch every time he was targeted," wrote Ulrich, who claimed that he's "never seen such a rough day."

"That's the life of a corner," coach Mike Pettine told reporters. "You have to have that short-term memory and be able to bounce back from a play. The best corners are confident corners, and that's something that comes from having success. And if he's in a little bit of a slump, it's on him. We have to help him, but he has to play his way out of it."

Pettine said the team won't "overreact" to Gilbert's on-field funk, saying: "You get them to stay true to their technique. When guys get in trouble, it's when their technique starts to slip. They start to do things out of structure to overcompensate. To me, it's a trust thing. Trust his own athletic ability, trust what we're telling him and just go out and take it play to play."

Gilbert entered training camp amid streams of praise from coaches and teammates. Browns Pro Bowl cornerback Joe Haden in March called Gilbert a "very, very talented player" on his way to "growing up." Gilbert acknowledged that his disastrous rookie season "pretty much humbled me a lot," while his improved work ethic led secondary coach Jeff Hafley to say that the first-rounder "can start this year and play and help us win games."

It's never really been about Gilbert's athletic gifts. He has all the tools to succeed, but has yet to show it on the field. Playing press cover in Pettine's Rex Ryan-esque defense is no easy chore, but the Browns don't have time to wait around for the light to go on.

For example, a throw is completed to a big TE who is not Gilbert's guy. However Gilbert now is in decent position to tackle the TE heading toward an exploitable seam nearby.

What does your gut tell he is going to do:

1) Say "F--- it! Not my guy/problem!"

2) Do what Skrine or Haden would always do by hustling into position to plant a shoulder, wrap and drive through the man.

3) Find the perfect excuse to slip or dive to avoid contact.

4) Grab so it at least appears he attempted to stop the guy.

I feel bad saying this but I don't have enough evidence to think he'd consider #2 above. A classic example of the difference between a guy that does the little things vrs a guy that puts I before team is Webster Slaughter on the Fumble. Here's a play where if Webster didn't want to block Jeremiah Castille - he could at least set a passive pic to prevent him the opportunity of stripping Byner of the football at the one. While that doesn't excuse how Byner was holding the football on that play - the refusal to do just 1 little thing was the difference between putting that playoff game in overtime and ending it with the type of disappointment it ended in. Games that close boil down to the little things. And Gilbert doesn't have my trust until he shows me it. Trust me when I say I'd love to have it. That said, I think we're talented and deep enough at corner to the extent Gilbert might not get any playing time or possibly a spot on the roster if he's not showing the coaches what he can do every day in practice.

Both Gilbert and Manziel have learned that this is finally the level where just being talented isn't enough to show up and be successful any more. They're at the point where if they fail to prepare - they should prepare to fail. We'll see how it plays out...

Flugel

Reply to Justin Gilbert on Sun, 30 Aug 2015 17:20:33 GMT

For the knocks I saw on Gaines tape during the draft process, credit this coaching staff for taking advantage of his strengths and cleaning up his footwork.

tiamat63

Reply to Justin Gilbert on Sun, 30 Aug 2015 15:40:40 GMT

@<bdi>tour2ma</bdi> said:

Because, if so, I've yet to find one person in my life who follows that supposed law of human nature.

Tim Couch Pulls Out

Reply to Justin Gilbert on Sun, 30 Aug 2015 14:26:29 GMT

It's like talking to Retard.
Gilbert came in here as our #8 pick in the first round with an immature, shit attitude. By the end of the year

he was being called out by respected veterans because of his arrogance, immaturity, and general

Fine, but understand that this goes back to Flugel's original point:

Let's just hope he erases all doubt during his window of opportunity here. So far, it's terrifying to see him out there playing grab ass and looking for for Waldo in man coverage. Cornerback seems like an instinctive trade. I heard at the Buffalo scrimmage, UDFA Andre Davis absolutely humiliated him. Again, we all want the kid to succeed. My biggest question with Gilbert is does he have the inner-chest to do all the little things that add up over a 60 minute game? For example, is the kind of corner willing to come up and tackle somebody in run support or come off a coverage to tackle a big TE finding a seam? One thing we've had here are corners that tackle well. This concern about Gilbert's tackling goes all the way back to pre-draft scouting reports.

At 1 time, I thought it would be awful if he didn't pan out. Now that I've seen us find an undrafted gem like K'Wuan Williams as well as sign a FA like Tramon Williams - good karma has already been taken care of. There's also other promising young corners here like Gaines, Desir and others.
