Last year they came to us in late October and we put them away with 14 in the 4th to win 23-13. They scored a meaningless TD with 7 seconds left.

Not sure why they come to us two-years in a row?

Here were the Offensive leaders:

Carr posted 34-54-328-1-0, McFadden(DAL) ran 12-59 and Rivera caught 7 for 83.

Hoyer posted 19-28-275-1-0, Tate ran 15-26 and Hawk caught 7/88.

Defensive Leaders were:

Tuck w/ 1 sack...

Krugs 3 sacks, Gip 1 INT, Haden-Martin-Mingo 1 FR each... in all, OAK put the ball on the ground 5 times.

Schaub threw the INT... in their bastardized, joke of a fake FG... IIRC.

O-line Grades: Week 8 vs. OAK

Revelation of the week: Khalil Mack... in a word: WOW!

I ended up noting which Brown(s) had the "pleasure" of blocking him on about half the plays either because it took a noteworthy block to keep him out of the play or he defeated a block to help stymie the play. He did not always win, but he won more than his share. We double-teamed Khalil often in the 2nd half. Between Mack and Moore (#55) the Raiders have the nucleus for a strong LB Corps for years to come.

Rant of the week: Moved to:

http://thebrownsboard.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=30734

If you rewatch only one play this week, watch S6P5. It occurs at 11:30 of Q3. I normally do not note play times anymore, just series start times, but when I saw this play, I had to note the time. In it I saw a play that vividly demonstrates what we miss with Mack out.

General Notes:

In general we did a great deal more drive blocking this week than I remember seeing. Several times Thomas and Bito combined to collapse the OAK D-line inside. Might have been opponent driven, but might have been O-line personnel driven.

We also appeared to run more pure Dbl-teams this week. Again, I cannot be sure if this was design or lack of getting off a "chip", but they looked purposeful.

OAK's front seven did their best to duplicate the JAX blitz and stunt successes... and while they did a couple times they just could not match JAX's personnel... especially on the D-line.

Greco was our leading puller this week with 4.

I noticed this week how much we were slotting Cam prior to his injury. Stuck me as a colossal waste of strength to hand fight press coverage.

The early sun of this late start played hell with our first "drive". I am sure it contributed to Cam's contested drop high over the middle (S1P2) and probably was a factor in Cam's drop of the low, 1st down throw on that series' 4th and last play.

I love watching Gabe block... maybe as much as he loves blocking...

Kind of the lesser of 2 evils....Williams is probably the better choice at both positions...ha!..... though Id say he has a much larger edge in the slot....while Desir offers a long body to pick up the taller receivers Holmes & Roberts, which is where he excels....

Haden should be fine.....yeah he had a rough game against the Jets, but he certainly didnt forget how to cover all of a sudden....

Usually, its those tall-long receivers where he does well(think AJGreen).....and its the short fast guys who make him struggle(think Antonio Brown)....Id expect him to handle Cooper just fine and maybe even provide a lil schooling to the rookie.....

Good points about Haden Mud! I think Dalton helps Haden way more than he helps AJ Green in that matchup. I've seen too may examples why to question them at this point.

Unfortunately, a couple matchups have reminded me that a size advantage on the perimeter can even make an elite corner like Joe vulnerable or at least in need of some help. In saying such a thing, I will provide examples. Last year, when we played New Orleans - Sean Payton made an brilliant adjustment that lined Jimmy Graham out wide isolated on the unfair size advantage he had over Haden. It wasn't that he thought Haden sucked as much as he knew he could exploit an unfair size advantage with his accurate QB. The Jets had a similar type of matchup even though it wasn't Drew Brees (it was just a QB clearly better than Andy Dalton). Interestingly enough, when NY threw to Marshall on the other side of formation - our Safety (Gipson) helped out in coverage and intercepted the pass.

Flugel

Reply to On to Oakland... on Sat, 26 Sep 2015 23:27:00 GMT

mack contributing to the raiders stellar record since being drafted. watkins lighting it up in buffalo. bridgewater candidate for the diddly squat award.

Browns cornerback K'Waun Williams out with concussion

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Browns starting nickel back K'Waun Williams sustained his third concussion in less than a year and will sit out Sunday against Oakland, forcing changes to Cleveland's secondary.

Coach Mike Pettine said following practice Friday that Williams, who signed with the Browns as an undrafted free agent last year, complained of headaches Thursday and the team placed him in the NFL's concussion protocol. The Browns don't know when Williams suffered his head injury. He practiced the past two days and was not listed on the injury report earlier this week.

Williams also suffered a concussion on Oct. 12 last season against Pittsburgh and in the Dec. 28 finale at Baltimore.

With Williams out, right cornerback Tramon Williams will likely move into the slot when the Raiders line up three wide receivers and Pierre Desir will play outside. Backup free safety Jordan Poyer has also spent some time in the nickel position.

The loss of Williams could be costly for the Browns, who will have to handle Oakland receivers Michael Crabtree and Amari Cooper, both of whom had more than 100 yards receiving last week in a win over Baltimore. Raiders quarterback Derek Carr passed for a career-high 351 yards in the win.

Pro Bowl cornerback Joe Haden said Williams will be tough to replace.

"He means a lot to the secondary," Haden said. "K'Waun's a guy that was undrafted, so he works super-hard. He goes out there, goes hard, knows his assignment, alignment, and he locks up the slot guys. That's his thing."

Haden is also concerned about Williams' long-term health.

"Definitely, man, because that's your head," Haden said. "And K'Waun, he's a young dude. He hasn't been in the league that long, so if he's messed up like that, he felt like he needed to go get himself checked out and make sure everything's OK."

Cornerback Justin Gilbert (hamstring) and defensive end Desmond Bryant (shoulder) are questionable for the game Sunday.

Gilbert missed Cleveland's first two games with a hip flexor and the former first-round pick, a major disappointment so far, hurt his hamstring in Thursday's practice.

Bryant didn't practice at all, and if he can't go, rookie Xavier Cooper will be active for the first time

D Bone

Reply to On to Oakland... on Fri, 25 Sep 2015 18:52:24 GMT

Yep....Kmack does it all.....amazing against the run.....also can rush the QB and generally just create havoc......though I dont think sacks are the reason for his positive ratings...(thats Kruger, I do believe)....

Mudfly

Reply to On to Oakland... on Fri, 25 Sep 2015 13:55:05 GMT

@<bdi>gftchris</bdi> said:

Del Rio and Company are putting him in a 3-point most of the time. Last year I remember him standing up as an OLB in either a 4-3 or 3-4 look. OAK seems to be really strapped for DL... one of their backup DTs only weighs 278...

Based on the OAK/BLT review and break down of our 1st half vs. TN, I expect us to be able to run on these guys. May even need to give Draughn touches just to give Crow and Duke a breather.

I think that means McCown has a better chance of a sub-200-yd game than a 300+... that is unless our D doesn't show up... and I'm guess that it will.

Shaping up to be a low-scoring, blow-out victory in my eyes... along the lines of 27-10.

So clearly we are doomed...

Tour2ma

Reply to On to Oakland... on Thu, 24 Sep 2015 23:43:27 GMT

@<bdi>diehardbrownsfan</bdi> said:

With McClown as QB: Raiders: 28 Browns: 3
