We have one target over 6ft, 'big play barnidge' and so teams can shut us down without an effective run game. Interestingly, out 2pc percentage is 50%, and all have been throws, while our red zone efficiency - with three or more attempts, not one, don't forget, is 35%. What's up with that?

We need a legitimate running game to get to the next level. I never thought that would be the issue, when we returned our legit-talented OL, and our two backs who combined for 12 TDs last year, plus the highly rated scat back we drafted, compared to the journeyman QB and munchkin receiving corps.

gftChris

Reply to Gurley's 1st TD on Tue, 27 Oct 2015 14:04:56 GMT

@<bdi>gftchris</bdi> said:

I really like Pett and I think he's the right guy for the job. But these things are high school things, 'pee wee' things (whatever the hell that is) - you have 11 men on the field, not more, not less.

Add that to the penalties and it's just very sloppy all round.

Well O'Neil is a high school coach so it kind of makes sense

Flip actually seems to have a handle on the O, with the exception of Red Zone efficiency (and that fumbling thing). pettine needs to get the D at least back up to last year's level. We're not going to move far from 32nd against the run, but we're also not great at pressuring the QB, at turning the ball over (Manning's suck fest tour de farce aside), at tackling. These things can help us get back to last year's level of about 21 points conceded per game - which would have us at 4-3 right now. We'd all take that I'm sure.

Red zone efficiency would probably be a little higher had we had a more successful run game and taller receivers. It's harder to hit the short little guys when they have less space to work with.

Our defense was better last year, but still sucked against the run then.

bbedward

Reply to Gurley's 1st TD on Tue, 27 Oct 2015 14:07:31 GMT

@<bdi>hoorta</bdi> said:

Said it elsewhere Chinese Fire drill defense doesn't work- especially if you can't count to 11. Just another reason to can the D coordinator. Someone was too F**king stupid to realize they screwed up, and call timeout.

The other problem is, Oneil is NOT designing how the defense runs by the personnel he has. He just has a system.

As in, Kruger in pass coverage??? Danny Shelton being constantly taken out of the game on passing downs?

Like Canton Mike said - here's a kid who kicks ass every second on the field, requires two blockers every time,

or he collapses the pocket, and he wants to be rookie of the year...

and Oneil keeps running him off the field like a racehorse. WTF? And going back to last year..

Q. "Okay, Oneil, we have options with our #1 pick, what do you think if we go defense with it?"

A. "Well, this kid, Justin Gilbert, is incredibly athletic - he could a all pro corner for years to come right out

of the gate. He reminds me of Deion Sanders.... - incredible athlete...."

Q. "Say, Oneil, why DO you keep taking Danny Shelton out of the game on passing downs?"

A. "Well, Meder runs faster than Danny, so he can run faster to the quarterback."

Q. "Well...on a draw, Danny slams it shut by dominating two blockers...so the lb's can step up and"

A. "No, they might fake the draw on a play action, and then toss to a blazing fast slot receiver or back, so

Kruger has to figure out how to keep up with and cover a 4.4 guy on a pass route.."

Q. "What? Oh well, anyways, on that one play, a few games ago.. with the opponent on the 1 yard line, you had your entire defense up on the line, and their TE slipped off from blocking a defender, and spun into the endzone all alone, and

caught a TD pass that made your defense look foolish. What was supposed to happen?"

A. "Say, how about our next opponent, huh? Want some coffee?"

Q. "But.... no thanks... seriously - what happened on that play?"

A. "sigh... okay, we knew they would try fooling us, so we fooled them, but only playing most all our defense

on the los, because we figured they knew we'd try to stop a pass, so they were going to run the ball, and

since they knew that we knew that they would try a pass, we knew they knew that they have to run the ball. Okay?"

Q. "I.... eh... could you go over that one more time? It seems you are confusing your players on the field....

A. "Cream and sugar with that coffee?"

Q. "Wait, one more question - you said "We WILL stop the run", but you have your linebackers read

what the defensive line is doing, and what the offensive line is doing, and then they go and fill

whatever gaps there will be, except the offensive line is apparently not cooperating, and the

defensive line adjusts on the fly, and you lb's just filled gaps where they should have been but

aren't really.... how do you plan to change and fix that?

A. "Say, how about some cookies with that coffee?"

calfoxwc

Reply to Gurley's 1st TD on Tue, 27 Oct 2015 14:00:59 GMT

I agree.
