<![CDATA[Security or Privacy?]]>Which do you prefer? In the latest installment of security versus privacy, the US government has apparently asked apple to allow 'back door' entry to the content on any iPhone (or apple device), in the name of security.

How do you feel about this?

On the one hand, I'm quite concerned about my privacy, don't like the idea of people reading my personal messages - it doesn't bother me either way that it's the government. On the other, when you hear things like 'the assailants had apparently coordinated the attack over whatsapp' (or your IM of choice), I think "well surely we could have intercepted that and found it out?"

So personally, I'm conflicted on the issue. Is it cut and dry for anyone here in either direction, and if so, why?

John McAfee, Anti-Virus Developer, Offers to Help FBI Unlock San Bernardino Terrorist’s iPhone

Anti-virus developer John McAfee has offered to help the FBI unlock the San Bernardino terrorist’s iPhone, one day after Apple refused to cooperate with authorities citing privacy concerns.

“I will, free of charge, decrypt the information on the San Bernardino phone, with my team,” McAfee wrote in a piece for Business Insider.

The iPhone belonged to Syed Rizwan Farook, the husband in the husband-and-wife terrorist team that killed 14 people and wounded 22 others in California in December 2015.

McAfee bragged in the piece that he works “with a team of the best hackers on the planet,” and if they couldn’t break the encryption he would “eat my shoe.”

McAfee claimed that Apple allowing the FBI to use a backdoor into the system would spell doom. “Our world, as we know it, is over,” he said.

Apple’s Tim Cook made a similar argument, saying if he allowed the government into a backdoor there would be “no way to guarantee” control over its access.

So McAfee made the offer, which would feature his team decrypting the information while allowing Apple to withstand the pressure to compromise its iOS system.

“We will primarily use social engineering, and it will take us three weeks,” McAfee wrote. “If you accept my offer, then you will not need to ask Apple to place a back door in its product, which will be the beginning of the end of America.”

Once a key is brought into existence, then the encryption is compromised... and intrusion by our government will be the least of our (or at least my) worries.

I imagine there's no special firmware that would just let you get through it - I'm imagining the pass code set by the user probably acts as a private key (at least I believe on android it does). They have to figure out the pass code regardless, and they can't brute force it because after you try too many times it wipes the phone.

That's my guess anyway, but if apple could install a firmware like that then there'd still be the problem of the FBI taking everybody's phone to apple to do that. There's only like 10,000 possible combinations I imagine a brute force would work pretty quickly.

If you can just get through encrypted data without the private key then the encryption algorithm is worthless.
