Mark it down on your calendars, the Cleveland Browns are doing something in the 2016 offseason.

On Tuesday it was reported they are meeting with free agent inside linebacker Demario Davis, according to Newsday’s New York Jets beat writer Kimberley Martin:

AP’s Tom Withers verified the meeting shortly after.

With veteran Karlos Danbsy inching closer to 40, and Craig Robertson testing the market, the inside linebacker position is one of dire need for the Browns. Not addressing it and rolling with Chris Kirksey, Dansby and Tank Carder into the draft isn’t a favorable situation.

Last week, it was reported as many as eight teams were interested in meeting with Davis, but there has been little chatter since the start of free agency.

In another offseason, negotiating with Davis one week into the new league year would be looked at as a solid move after the big money deals had already shaped the market. But after losing four key players and making seemingly little effort at replacing them, negativity has skyrocketed around the team’s new front office.

Davis, 27, was drafted by the Jets in the third round of the 2012 NFL draft. While he struggled some in 2015, according to Pro Football Focus, he still finished second in tackles for the Jets. Despite playing heavily during the first 10 games, Davis slowly fell out of favor with the team down the stretch. He played just 16 snaps in the team’s pivotal season finale against Buffalo.

It’s hard to say what caused Davis to seemingly slump in a contract season, but it could work out for the Browns financially as they look to bolster the interior of their linebacker corps. Getting a still relatively young and experienced player with something to prove is a good way to maximize their investment in free agency. Signing Davis likely wouldn’t preclude the team from drafting another linebacker or bringing in others to compete.

Right now? Sorry Cal. To just break even we need to replace 5 starters in the upcoming draft with players that are at least as good, if not better to show any improvement. Lotsa luck there, unless you're hoping for the miracle the Steelers pulled off drafting 4 HOFers in one year. (Usually one draft class in total doesn't produce that many)

You pretty much nailed it. I really think his playing style is what we need. Our coaches need to get the most out of our players, and Craig's skillset wasn't exactly a perfect match for what we needed. I don't know why they sat him either, as the coach stated he didn't have an issue with his play. I like the fact that he's in his prime age too.
No... It won't. Just stop it.... We will not be competitive in 2016... not by design... not even by accident.

This is a complete tear down. No more straddling the fence with one foot on the rebuild side and one on the salvage some competitiveness side. All that has done is bruised our balls repeatedly...

This is a tear-it-down, take all the pressure off of the staff because we understand they cannot win, year...

And the tear down is not yet complete...

Tour2ma

Reply to Browns Sign former Jet LB Demario Davis on Wed, 16 Mar 2016 17:38:03 GMT

@<bdi>the-gipper</bdi> said:

To me "around the team" means the people that are inside the organization. Players/coaches/FO types. etc. Writers and media pundits are still outsiders.

Dont expect to be spectacular. Just, hopefully, an upgrade over Robinson and an improvement to our run D.....

Mudfly

Reply to Browns Sign former Jet LB Demario Davis on Wed, 16 Mar 2016 16:44:09 GMT

I honestly don't know much about the guy, but that's what the article said. I'd also point out that he got benched at the end of the season, and split time at best with another backer. That being said, I think his skill set transfers to what we need at the right price. We need a "thumper" in the middle of the field...an enforcer type. I think this guy can do that. Will he be awesome? I doubt it, but who knows? I like Craig as a person, and from what I read, he was an incredible teammate.

jiggins7919

Reply to Browns Sign former Jet LB Demario Davis on Wed, 16 Mar 2016 16:42:17 GMT

@<bdi>gftchris</bdi> said:

This needs benny hill music.
