TAMPA, Fla. (AP)—Kellen Winslow and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers agreed Monday to a six-year, $36.1 million contract extension that will make the one-time Pro Bowl selection the highest-paid tight end in NFL history.

Agent Drew Rosenhaus said the deal includes $20.1 million guaranteed, a record for a tight end. With incentives, it could be worth up to $42.1 million.

Contract talks began soon after the Feb. 27 trade that sent Winslow, who participated in the Bucs’ voluntary minicamp last week, to Tampa Bay from Cleveland in exchange for a second-round pick in this year’s draft and a fifth-rounder in 2010.

“The Bucs were open to something long-term,” Rosenhaus said. “It’s nice to get it done.”

Winslow was the sixth overall pick in the 2004 draft, and his career has been marked by plenty of highs, lows and controversy.

The 25-year-old had 219 receptions for 2,459 yards and 11 touchdowns in five seasons with the Browns, and the Bucs are counting on him to play a major role in an overhauled offense next season.

Winslow had 89 catches for 875 yards and three touchdowns in 2006 and followed with 82 receptions for 1,106 yards in 2007. He survived a serious motorcycle accident and battled injuries throughout his stay in Cleveland, and last season squabbled with the Browns’ front office.

The Bucs fired coach Jon Gruden in January after losing their last four games to miss the playoffs following a 9-3 start. Upgrading the offense has been the top priority under successor Raheem Morris, who brought in former Boston College coach Jeff Jagodzinski as his offensive coordinator.

In addition to trading for Winslow, the Bucs placed the franchise tag on receiver Antonio Bryant, assuring him a salary of $9.8 million next season, and signed former New York Giants running back Derrick Ward to a four-year, $17 million contract.

Tampa Bay also decided against retaining quarterback Jeff Garcia, leaving Luke McCown, Brian Griese and Josh Johnson to compete for the starting job. Garcia signed with Oakland on Monday.

Reply to Winslow now highest-paid tight end in NFL history. on Tue, 21 Jul 2009 18:23:35 GMT

I do understand why he and the team parted ways, but I still think he was a very valuable player. "I was real disappointed when no one came to my defense," Winslow told Wickersham. "They don't want to get suspended or have conduct detrimental to the team, but you've gotta be a man sometimes."

Wickersham wrote that he contacted several former Browns employees on why no one defended Winslow. Wickersham said those conversations revealed hard feelings over Winslow treating the trainers like he was their only patient, jeopardizing his damaged knee from a 2005 motorcycle accident by playing basketball in the off-season and his lewd locker room remarks. The article also said Winslow got into "an altercation with a friend last summer, which the team kept private to protect him." Winslow also alienated teammates and staffers with his demand for a new contract.

C'mon buddy, stop with the sour grapes. I bet if I searched your posts I'd find you used to like the guy. Am I right?

You have to SUBTRACT the catches and TD's that our current TE's would get to ascertain the BENEFIT of having him...then you have to figure in the BLOCKS they would get that HE wouldn't.

So, catch wise he is worth 20-30 extra catches by a TE, and maybe 1-2 TD's.....and he is likely to cost us 20-30 blocks that he would not be able to maintain due to his knees....then add on the fact that teams KNOW he can't block so they can scheme to rush the side that he is lined up on and you pretty much come out with a very minimal gain on an average team.

Sure, I like him. And I agree is a good player...and among the best when it comes to receiving from the TE position...but his limited ability to block...and the strong pass rushes we face in the AFC North...limit his effectiveness. He will be a nice fit in the warm weather of TB...but here is as much a liability in pass blocking as he is a weapon in receiving....definitely not worth 5x what we are going to pay 3 other TE's.

WPB Dawg Fan

Reply to Winslow now highest-paid tight end in NFL history. on Sat, 11 Apr 2009 20:28:35 GMT

@<bdi>kellen-rulez</bdi> said:
It's more like the previous regime valued his value.

K2 might be the best receiving TE in the entire NFL this year. And if he's totally healthy, in all likelihood he will be.

All that matters here is your organization could have had two of those years. Suckers.

And you could have had him for two years too, at the old contract fact is Tampa did not have to give him that contract and was dumb to do it at least until after this year is over.

He is the best receiving TE, but it is the whole package that hurts him, he can't block as well as he should cause of the bum knee, and being that he can't run block as well he does present a bit of a tell tell. (although that is not a huge deal) his achelies heal is the fact of that his career is cut short. If you don't think that his career was cut short and his abilities cut short then you are fooling yourself.

Its a very BIG IF about Winslow staying healthy all season. Even if he does, and he was here, his play alone is not going to make the Browns a playoff team, and that is the point most are trying to get into your thick head. Whether you want to face facts or not, his accident and subsequent surgeries and bouts with staph have left his knees in questionable shape, especially when it comes to lasting an entire season. On top of it, he can be a distraction with his mouth and his contract demands. Lets not forget, the dude just cannot run-block to save his own mama. That is important in the cold, windy months.

He may very well thrive down in Tampa. Its a completely different situation. You can't equate Nov-Dec in Tampa to the same months in Ohio. I hope KWII does have a great season with the Bucs. But that does not mean he would have that same kind of season in Cleveland.

K2 might be the best receiving TE in the entire NFL this year. And if he's totally healthy, in all likelihood he will be.

All that matters here is your organization could have had two of those years. Suckers.

Dude, you have just as many what-ifs in your arguments in favor of your lover as any Browns fan has for this being a good deal on Mankok's part.

NebBrownsFan

Reply to Winslow now highest-paid tight end in NFL history. on Sat, 11 Apr 2009 17:57:08 GMT

holy hell.

That's a lot of what-ifs.

The benefit would probably be in the 70-80 reception 5 TD range.
