I think he really overestimates his popularity amongst the conservative community. I think both the Weekly Standard and the National Republic have lost ground over the years.

Personally I was a fan of Mitt Romney but he wasn't very popular among the population.

And he should face the fact that that same population doesn't want a religious zealot either. They do want some free shit and they don't care about abortion and gay marriage.

Some of them I assume are willing to die on that hill so...
