(your answer may be: why not....they are doing that at a number of other spots).

But....let's assume that is not what they wish to do. Who is out there in the way of veteran backups.

Here are the names I find:

Tavaris Jackson. Had some decent time in Seattle. He is 33.

Josh Freeman. Former 1st rounder for Bucs. Not that old. He is still only 28. Played with Indy last year.

Matt Flynn. Backup in Green Bay....was to be starter for Seattle til Wilson took over. He is only 31.

Chad Henne. Only age 31, but has not played since 2014.

Josh Johnson...still listed as an NFL FA...but not played since 2013. Sounds retired

Ryan Lindley... also played with Indy last year. Only 27. But he is about as bad a QB as I have seen.

Charlie Whitehurs....also played with Indy last year...that is 3 of these guys. But he is 34.

TJ Yates. Backup in Houston last year. Age 29

Michael Vick. The old one of the bunch....at age 36...but did start 3 games for the Steelers last year.

Is he the sort of insurance policy you would want to bring in, given his background? Can we ignore his past....or his age?

At Freeman's young age, he seems a possible best fit as far as the analytics go. But he is just so bad as to be not worth a back up slot.

Anybody else out there that floats your boat?

Reply to We need an experienced backup QB on Tue, 20 Sep 2016 03:08:30 GMT

@<bdi>darren15</bdi> said:

This Hoyer guy at the Bears might be OK

Clearly the result of the game proved me correct. McCown breaks his shoulder and the HC dare not turn the team over to Kessler. He would rather a one armed McCown be in there.
I don't know if they are kicking themselves. Sure Wentz looked good but its not like he beat the 85 Bears on Sunday. Goff can't even beat out Case Keenum and something called Sean Mannion and if you watched Hard Knocks on HBO, you can see why. The guy has never called a play in the huddle in his life. He has no idea what he's doing. Draft a guy number 1 overall and he can't even beat out a crappy Case Keenum? Time will tell if the Browns made the right choice so we will see.
To spur on other discussion. I spent two years in North Carolina (just moved back to OH this past spring) and the fans of the Panthers loved Derek Anderson. Flame me all you want, but I would take Derek Anderson over any of the "floating" options out there right now. He's experienced and has an arm that could stretch the field and keep up with our receivers.

he stinks. after he lost to the 2 worst teams in the nfl by throwing pick 6 after pick 6 the yr we went 10-6 and did not make the playoffs, i want no part of him...my wife said he got the yips meaning the first half of that season he was dead on however somewhere during the 2 part of the season he kept overthrowing the ball 10 ft of the receivers head or throwing pick after pick and that was that...i remember it carrying over to the pro bowl also and then into the cardinal where he really stunk...

browns52

Reply to We need an experienced backup QB on Wed, 14 Sep 2016 20:37:04 GMT

@<bdi>hoorta</bdi> said:

Seems the Eagles threw Wentz right into the fray. Kessler has had more experience at a higher level. Plus now as the #1 backup he'll get some practice reps with the first team- Hue would be crazy not to. Pryor will probably be the emergency quarterback.

If Kessler has any shot at being good longer term he would be ruined by actual game action this year. If you cant see that from the pre season not sure what to say. The game is way to fast for him at this point.

jcam222
