The title of the post reflects the lost chances Pryor had to make some very big plays, and the article I'm posting is one of my favorites every week. It's the "film review" that comes every Wednesday or Thursday, and it's terrific.

The first play I want to look at is after Kessler got hurt, and we're already down a bunch of points. Pryor comes in as QB, and he runs to the left for a gain of 1 yard. Seems like no big deal, right? Well, WRONG. The Browns had two WR's lined up left, and the Pats only had one DB covering them, with the second cheating drastically towards the line of scrimmage. Pryor runs to his left with the hopes our WR can maintain his block, but after a decent cut block, the defender gets up and makes a terrific tackle. Hindsight is always 20/20, but had the other WR hit the cut defender again, Pryor is still running. Just look at that open field. It's a touchdown, and that would've given us 14.

The second play also involves Pryor, and this time it's a sloppy fake and roll out to the right. Pryor ends up throwing a decent ball to a covered Higgins, who can't make the play for his first catch of the season (how does he not have a damn catch?). The Pats defender is over-pursuing Pryor, and had Pryor planted his right foot and shot up toward the left-middle...it's a big gainer.

Every team, every week has these missed opportunities. Problem is, they are better than the Browns and can probably find other ways to make up for them. The Browns cannot. We don't have a margin of error that we can overcome, and we need to hit the plays that present themselves. Also, we need to stick with Pryor for a few plays every week. Big plays are THERE if we could just execute, and we need those so badly right now.

For instance, Pro Football Focus creates their own "QB Rating" statistic, and it's probably measured by a whole bunch of different stuff, but the bottom line is that it obviously relates to how well a QB plays. Now, according to this stat, Kessler is ranked ahead of Kirk Cousins, Blake Bortles, Aaron Rodgers, Joe Flacco, and a host of others. Not only that, but guess who leads the league in completion percentage against "being pressured"? Cody freaking Kessler is ranked NUMBER ONE against pressure, and he completes an astounding 86% of his passes when under duress. Now, I don't exactly know what constitutes "being pressured", but we're not talking about Cody being "pretty good" or "in the top half" of this category, we're talking about his being freaking number one. Granted, he hasn't played as much as other starters, but this completely shocked the crap out of me.

There's no way to sugar coat this. We got killed by Josh Gordon (again) and Corey Coleman's injury. We knew before the season started that in order for us to surprise some people and steal some wins, we were going to have to avoid the injury bug. Not only have we NOT avoided it, we've embraced the damn thing. A team likes ours simply doesn't have the depth needed to overcome pivotal injuries, and that's just how it is. We will be further tested by losing our best guard, and probably the best guard in our division. We have gotten the lion's share of our rushing yards when running behind Joel's pulling skills, so don't be surprised if we can't run worth a crap (again). Exacerbating this scenario is the fact that the Titans have a killer DL. Yikes.

But back to Kessler. Albert Breer wrote an article today which essentially commended the Browns on what they've done and how they are approaching the most recent rebuild. Breer further stated that the Browns were completely sold on Kessler before the draft, and were amazed with his ability to quickly digest information and apply it to his craft. Further, he went on to say that Kessler was the Browns first choice of day 2 QB's, and wanted Cody above and beyond ANY of the available players left. What we're starting to see is just a little bit of why our franchise was so high on him. I can't think of too many 3rd string QB's that could come in and not be totally lost after being thrown into the mix in like game 3. That's basically unheard of.

Am I saying that Cody is our franchise QB? That he's an eventual allstar? That our problems are solved? Hell no, nobody is saying that, but the general feeling from a few sports writers and our management is that the game is not too big for Kessler, and he just might surprise some people. He doesn't get the ball down field, he doesn't run for any yards, yet he's calm, cool, and collected against the rush, and he seems to know where to go with the ball...not to mention throwing with surprising accuracy. We dodged a severe bullet with his recent injury, and we get to watch our young QB progress and try to win a position that nobody else could lock down. He's got a chance, no matter how small, and that's pretty exciting for this team.

jiggins7919

Reply to What Could've Been Against Pats... on Fri, 14 Oct 2016 12:50:30 GMT

@<bdi>jiggins7919</bdi> said:
