By ALAN ROBINSON, AP Sports Writer

10 hours, 18 minutes ago

PITTSBURGH (AP)—Pittsburgh Steelers All-Pro safety Troy Polamalu(notes) sprained the medial collateral ligament in his left knee late in the first half of their 13-10 overtime victory against Tennessee on Thursday night. Coach Mike Tomlin said the injury usually sidelines a player from 3 to 6 weeks.

Polamalu was injured when a Titans player fell on him as Steelers defensive end Aaron Smith(notes) blocked a 31-yard field goal attempt by Rod Bironas with about three minutes left in the half. Polamalu was attempting to pick up the ball.

Before getting hurt, Polamalu made a one-handed interception and led both teams in tackles with six.

Tomlin said there is a chance the injury could be worse once further tests are run.

“I’m sure there’s a possibility of it, but I don’t have any concrete evident that there is anything more than that,” Tomlin said.

A two-time All-Pro safety, Polamalu was chosen for the past five Pro Bowls. He is considered one of the NFL’s premier defensive players.

“We definitely were aware of him not being in there,” said Titans quarterback Kerry Collins(notes), who led a touchdown drive immediately after Polamalu was hurt. “You calls the plays based on coverage, and sure we’d like to say, ‘Hey, he’s out of the game’ and do a couple of different things.”

Though Polamalu potentially could be sidelined much of the first half of the season, the injury could have been much worse—an anterior collateral ligament injury might have put him out the rest of the season.

Rod Woodson, the Hall of Fame cornerback, tore up his knee in the Steelers’ 1995 season opener, needed major surgery and didn’t return until the Super Bowl. He was the first player to return from such an injury and play in the same season.

The Steelers players are off until Monday, when the team is scheduled to practice again.

Reply to Polamalu hurts hair folicles in his knee, may be out 3-6 weeks on Sun, 13 Sep 2009 05:30:28 GMT

BS dude...

I roll my eyes when I hear these arguments about "your team has our players". The players go where they're drafted/traded to. Sometimes now in FA they can work a deal and play for a team they really want to, but that doesn't happen often. Gipper hit the nail on the head. It's not an Ohio vs Pennsylvania thing. This entire area of blue collar mill towns has produced a cornucopia of football greats. Stick a compass in a map on the Ohio/Pennsylvania border between Youngstown and New Castle. Now draw a circle 200 miles in radius. Inside that circle you'll find the birthplaces of HOF'ers such as Paul Brown, Bob Brown, Larry Csonka, Jack Lambert, Chuck Noll, Len Dawson, Roger Staubach, Dan Marino, Jim Kelly, Joe Montana, Johnny Unitas, Tony Dorsett, Mike Ditka, Red Grange, Don Shula and Joe Namath. Most of them played somewhere else all of their careers. But this entire area of mill towns with hard working people who take football seriously has given the NFL HOF almost 1/6th of it's inductees. That's a hell of a lot of talent from a 200 mile circle.

LNC

Reply to Polamalu hurts hair folicles in his knee, may be out 3-6 weeks on Sat, 12 Sep 2009 00:40:59 GMT

Hilarious post! UH, Duh, we have 13 of them. Would you like a recitation. Hell, we already got both hands and most of one foot covered. Even if you double your number you wouldn't catch up.

so some of our great players and coaches came from ohio. if they hadn't come from ohio they would have simply come from somewhere else.

maybe even our hometown...............Marino........Dorsett.........Law..........Puz.......etc.

just because we happened to pick a ohio state grad or someone that just happened to be shat out of their mother on your side of the border does in no way end up meaning that we would be nothing without the lovely state of ohio.

Both areas are rich in players that come out of there. Most of the great players from this area didn't play here. Some did. Did you see my thread on Running backs and QBs that come from NE Ohio? At least 4 HOFers. And I certainly know W.Pa. has a lot of outstanding players there. It is a specious argument.

A better argument is to note that all those so called great SEC and other BCS teams just happen to have head coaches that come from NE Ohio. We really do have a far, far greater proportion of quality coaches coming out of here than most areas, college and pro.

The Gipper

Reply to Polamalu hurts hair folicles in his knee, may be out 3-6 weeks on Fri, 11 Sep 2009 22:01:07 GMT

TheJokersWILD said:
Can you imagine Eric Turner playing in Dick LeBeau's scheme?

Ronnie Lott. Jack Tatum, etc..

IF Lebeau doesn't croak and coaches this defense for another 3-4 years, yes, I can see where TP will acquire the reputation as one of the best ever....but like I said, Joey Porter was on that path too till he left. I doubt that the Steelers will let TP leave. I understand he may indeed be a standup guy, despite the offal he has on his dome. (and I know a lot of other players have that look too, but they usually have dreads. I don't like it on them either, including the Browns players. I prefer to have a guy "look like a ball player". These long locks don't do that.

The Gipper

Reply to Polamalu hurts hair folicles in his knee, may be out 3-6 weeks on Fri, 11 Sep 2009 21:55:13 GMT

Nafreleets said:
but to kinda cast a shadow on Troy P. like he's more the product of a system and not, in actuality one of the best SS's to ever play the game, is just not based in reality.

But you have no freeking clue about that. He IS a product of that system, yes that is my belief, and it is absolutely grounded in reality. Again, I am not saying that he isn't very good, just that the system by far helps his cause. The proof WILL be in the pudding....I say that without him in there the Steelers defense will lose little...that whomever replaces him will be schooled well enough by LeBeau to closely duplicate what TP does now. The only thing the new guy won't have is that silly hair cut.

By the way, I will be glad to be proven wrong if teams now steamroll over the Steelers D in the next season without TP in there.

The Gipper

Reply to Polamalu hurts hair folicles in his knee, may be out 3-6 weeks on Fri, 11 Sep 2009 21:48:54 GMT

@<bdi>ithika</bdi> said:
If it wasn't for Ohio football your Stoolers would be just that a big pile of stinking SHIT!

it's the same with all the Steelers players.

Troy in black and gold................ an overrated cheapshot artist

Troy in brown and orange........... the best player to ever play the game.

Ben in black and gold..............for some reason hated by browns fans for being a "douche" (why you think that i don't know)

Ben in brown and orange.............the best think since sliced bread

Ward in black and gold................lol, where should i begin....dirty, overrated etc...

Ward in brown and orange...........you'd have retired his jersey before he retired from the game

Harrison in black and gold............a steroid user that is dirty as the day is long

Harrison in brown and orange........a "go getter" that plays with intensity.

we could keep going, but won't. that's the one thing i don't understand about brown's fans. they never seem to respect their rivals for what they do......they just tear them down. but i bet the browns and their fans would admit that they'd love to have them on their roster.
